Sorry if this has been mentioned, but I can't find it. Today I read in the paper that Queen are releasing an album called Deep Cuts. I also found it here at hmv. It aparently is a collection of lesser known tracks from the first five albums. What a kick in the teeth yet again. |

It has been discussed in other threads, but heck, what's one more? This collection isn't for hardcore fans. Not everything is directed at you and me, fans who have every album and are waiting for something new. Deep Cuts is aimed at casual fans who might only have the "Hits" and are curious about what else is out there. We might argue that they ought to dive right into the albums, what's the harm? Well, some people need an extra step and if this introduces them to a few lesser-known songs and that prompts them to buy "Queen II" and "Sheer Heart Attack" and they eventually grow into ardent fans, then it did its job. If you're thinking, "Yeah, okay, new fans are great, but I'm still waiting for something new and they ought to be focused on my needs as well as this!" then all I can say is, Deep Cuts was probably not a labour-intensive project. That doesn't mean it's not good, even though we might question the tracks selected. And as for giving the fans something new, QP is likely thinking we'll be happy with the Deluxe Editions. Then again, some fans are never happy unless their needs are met regularly and thoroughly. Not to mention some fans want old concerts released, while other fans want the demos and outtakes, while many would like Roger and Brian to be working on new stuff (be it as Queen or solo projects). You might say, "Hell, all of that would be great! Give me everything!" Well, if it seems QP is careful to dole out the rarities and concerts, it may be because there isn't the wealth of gems we hope for hiding in the vaults and what they do have, once released, marks the cupboard officially being bare. What then? We'll be happy for a while, then we'll get discontent and will clamor for new stuff, but the new stuff won't have Freddie and John, so we'll complain that it's just not the same, when deep down all this longing for new Queen is really an attempt to regain our past, which is impossible. Just my thoughts. I could be wrong. |

Sorry, must admit I don't read the threads as much as I used to. I do agree about new fans though, as Queen deserves the recognition for their past material. I just feel a little let down by the new releases, as I already own the albums on vinyl,cd and mini vinyl. So there is no need for me to buy them. I remember the excitement I had when I got my first wage. I went to HMV and bought every Queen album they had. I just want that sort of excitement again, that's all. |

What then?" =================================== It will never be bare. They have hundreds of hours of video footage from 1977 alone. The exhibition is revealing that there is plenty of stuff we don't even know about. |

So Deep Cuts is nothing extraordinary then? Not rare outtakes or anything, just the normal tracks? |
pittrek 18.03.2011 09:13 |
Standalone versions of Ogre Battle and March Of The Black Queen. Nothing REALLY interesting |

Hi all, I really cant see the point in Deep Cuts, or the inevitable Deep Cuts II, or III that will follow. All these tracks were remastered when the change from vinyl to CD happened. How can they remaster them again ? They can make them sound different, but is that a remaster, or just a remix ? I also cant see the point in the remasters of the first five albums for the same reason, this just appears to be the Queen money machine rolling along on the change from EMI to Universal Music who will inevitably want their "pound of flesh". Anyone who loves the music of Queen can easlily buy the back catalogue from start to finish quite cheaply and be amazed at the genious of the songwriting, production and performance from start to finish, each album tells a story from the early days and is an anthology in itself, but it would appear that it is not bringing in enough pounds, dollars or whatever. Deep Cuts is just an ill thought out hotch potch, of a few tracks from the each of the five albums, they are not even in any chronological order..........DONT BUY DEEP CUTS... buy the first five albums on CD second hand on Ebay, or download them for nothing on Extratorrent. You wont notice the difference.....hardly... Queen could have easlily done something similar to what the Beatles did with the Beatles Anthology, which I have to say was a masterpiece of recording to the extent that I purchased the CD's, the DVD,s and a book, becuase they offered ORIGINALITY AND VALUE FOR MONEY , giving rare early recordings, interviews, and videos that were put together so skilfully. The Beatles empire got their money and I got original quality material. Queen could have used some of the material from the Magic Years Video, and used this to show the band from the very early Smile days.... there are many tracks out there that have never been fully utilised apart from bootlegs...Hangman, Silver Salmon, to name but a few.... I am sure that some of these tracks could have been cleaned up and presented to the fans. There is a miriad of video material of high quality, that could have been used, much of which was on display at the recent Stormtroopers in Stilletos exhibition.... and I am sure there is much more besides..what is going on here, why are Queen missing a trick for a proper Anthology. The first five albums re released ? How is someone aged 15 supposed to know the the richness that the sound of vinyl produced and how to compare it. All they are going to hear is another remixed CD version. The extra tracks are derisory, many of which are already owned by the die hard Queen Fans. I suggest you get searching and you will find all of this material for nothing on the web. Queen...........I paid my dues, I purchased you albums on casette tape, vinyl, CD, Greatest Hits CD, Video Tape, and DVD. Not to mention concert tickets, programmes , merchandise. and cimema visits..... Oh I forgot.. and a Brian May Guitar... I am severly dissapointed that you have not gone the whole hog to produce a proper Anthology. This appears to be a quick fix for Universal Music....sitting fat and pretty lads.... Lashthecanary.... |

I assume Universal sees Queen as an evergreen property (which it is) that they will be able to milk for years to come, thus the fact that the albums are being reissued with a modicum of bonus material and that Deep Cuts has nothing substantial of interest for the hardcore fan indicates to me that these are put the toe in the water. With the 40th anniversary this year and the Freddie biopic next year, there's plenty of reason to spread new-old releases out over the next couple of years. The Stormtroopers exhibit (which Universal is no doubt footing the bill for) shows they are much more interested in Queen's archival material than EMI was for the previous decade at least. Thus I expect new-old material to be more imminently forthcoming than it has been in many years and would encourage you glass-is-half-empty people to get a firm grip on your hysteria. |

Lash, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Deep Cuts was not aimed at us hardcore fans. It's a beginner's disc. It's a marketing tool to get new fans into the albums as an intermediate step between the Hits collections and the back catalogue. It's not a personal insult to your fandom. I don't mean to sound patronizing, but let's keep some perspective here. |

I have had a mooch on ebay, and I reckon that I could get the first five albums on cd for under £20 if I was a bit canny about it. If that is the case, if I was a new fan, why on earth would I want to pay whatever for a collection put together by Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters. Ok the tracks are remastered, fiddled with call it what you like. If I was a new fan how would I tell the difference ? If you google "Queen Deep Cuts" the first website UNDERCOVER, describes this as a CD for die hard fans ? Sorry, die hard fans already have this music. You could argue that for purists, that we should all get out our vinyl copies of these albums and listen to them anologue style, as it is argued that this provides a richer sound than digital. This is just a quick fix and a pure rip of to satisfy the new music company at the expense of people that enjoy their music. My money will be staying firmly in my pocket. Its cheap fixes like these that push people to go to iilegal download sites just to have a free look before comitting to buying. Mr May and Mr Taylor are having a laugh at our expense. |
rhyeking 20.03.2011 19:45 |
Sorry, I didn't mean to contradict the venerable and upstanding UNDERCOVER website and its assertion that it's a must-have for fans. Heavens to Betsy! What was I thinking? Hate it all you want, Lash, if there's no convincing you otherwise. |

Bohemian.... I am not trying to contradict you. I am juts very disapointed at the lack of effort in this project. Regards.... Lash |

I wish they'd release this on 2x12" vinyl. Big black cardboard cover, would look awesome. |
