thought itd be nice, but i guess the same as every year, its a huge slap in the face wheather ur with someone or not, nothing on TV but adds for valentines day flowers and shows having a valentines day special, its just annoying! |

Dislike. A spontaneous act can be romantic; a perfunctory set of flowers because it is February 14th is consumerism. |

If your partner or romantic interest would be moved by and appreciative of some small act you probably won't do yourself any favours by picking today to make a stand against consumerism. There is joy in giving time and things to the people we care about, isn't there? Thoughtfulness doesn't have to be expensive. |

I don't care of that day... just wanna sleep all the time. |

Thoughtfulness doesn't have to be expensive. ====== What I see is thousands of people fully expecting to get something from their partner on Valentine's Day, and getting angry if they don't. I also notice that very many people feel *obliged* to get their partner something. That in particular I find disturbing, as it removes all the joy from the gesture. Expensive has nothing to do with it - it is, like I said, the perfunctory nature of it - February 14 -> I have to get my partner something. Any sense of feeling is removed from the equation. |

I used to be inclined to say that I hate it, but last year's one was nice, and I have too much integrity to hate on something just because it didn't work out for me this time around. Better luck next year, as they say. |

^ And since next year is a leap year, tradition says that it is the girls who must do the sending of cards, asking us guys to marry them, etc.......... |

I've always found that tradition to be quite weird. I know several married couples where the girl proposed to the guy, and they all did so in non-leap years. I can understand why the tradition would have been applicable years ago when women just did not propose, but now? I think it's just silly. |
lifetimefanofqueen 15.02.2011 13:02 |
what if its a girl proposing to a girl? that i guess can get away with "tradition" because its always good to be a rebel ;) same with a guy proposing to a guy, i personally think its nicer to have a guy proposing to a girl, but some guys are just so THICK! you can give all the hints you want of that you want them to propose to you but TV and modern technology messed that up! so you gotta do thses things yourself sadly, but this isnt for all men, just some |

Valentines day should not be set aside for anyone to show their love for another person, that should be anytime. Valentines Day, Mothers Day, Fathers Day and even Christmas Day I now see as consumerist crap. To paraphrase Thomas slightly, people do feel obliged to get their partner something or risk upsetting them. Luckily I have a girlfriend who is not that bothered if I dont get her things on Valentines. That said I did get her stuff this year, but only because I actually wanted to. |

The other thing is that it makes those who have no partner feel guilty. They feel unloved, lonely and made to feel guilty for not being in a relationship on the 'most romantic' day of the year. |

As hard as getting over people can be, being in no relationship is incalculably preferable to being in the wrong relationship, and all a single Valentine's Day has ever meant for me was half price chocolate on the 15th. I also wanted to mention to you that I was thinking about you last evening, oddly enough. :) I went to see Heart in concert, (Heart on Valentine's Day - see how they did that there? ha ha) and I was thinking about you mentioning on the board that 'Alone' was one of your favourites. So I resigned to record it for you! But my camera had about 5% battery left, because I can be really stupid that way. So I crossed my fingers and used my cell phone and in the end it was a completely inaudible screeching, hissing, unlistenable mess. As was 'Crazy on You' and 'Barracuda' which I attempted to record for myself. Dam Lampinski I am apparently not. Anyway, the show was fanstastic. Those women have not lost a note, and they both sound exactly like they did 30 years ago. The only video up on YouTube from the concert so far happens to be 'Alone', from someone far less moronic than I at taping. Check it out! |

I haaaaaaaate seeing girls demasculinize their boyfriends on Valentine's Day. It makes me sick. I must agree with what TQ said.... I was surprised my boyfriend even said happy Valentine's Day to me this year...last year I don't think he even realized what day it was. I don't like seeing people feel like they are obligated to buy flowers or cute teddy bears or go out for dinner, or else face the wrath of a pissed off chick saying "you must not love me." I wasn't expecting any gifts this year, seeing as last year, a few days after Valentine's I received an empty box of chocolates (with no hard feelings I must add...it was somewhat of a joke....I'm a health nut and he was like "I ate your chocolates so you wouldn't have to")...Not only did I get a "Happy Valentine's Day" this year...he bought me a bolo knife, which I must say---I am pretty happy about, and I ended up getting him some Nazi Germany WWII documentaries...I don't like falling into conventions. It just doesn't feel special getting a box of chocolates because that's what "you're supposed to do." Nothing feels meaningful if someone is forced into doing it, which is why I never force anyone into doing anything, any day of the year, even if something is bothering me. And I don't like so many people overdoing it with PDA. But that's just a side note. :-P However, Valentine's Day is special to me in a way, because it's my mom's birthday. :-) |

Holy crap people. Being sentimental is not a character flaw. If V-Day traditions are not important to the people in a relationship then there's no issue. But if they're important or meaningful to one and the other can't or won't connect with that, that's an opportunity lost. Whether it's Valentine's Day or somebody dreaming about birthday sex all day long, the other half can certainly 'win' that battle if they want by simply opting out or opting in so begrudgingly that all the happiness is sucked out, but what did they win exactly? Probably something like a disappointed, hurt partner and a squandered chance to connect with them in a time and place and way that was meaningful to them. Congratulations, I guess. Many elements of a relationship benefit from negotiation, equity, consensus, etc., but sometimes the first few steps of anything just have to be about the other guy. |

I guess living in Australia, where Valentine's Day isn't a so relevant, being single isn't a big deal. However, I have a few friends who live in America, and while it's not like in the movies (where single people on Valentine's Day are made to feel like criminals), they do feel a little depressed being single. Stil I definitely agree that it is better to be single than to be in a bad relationship. BTW, I have an ex-girlfriend who has vowed never to again accept a date on Valentine's Day. Every Valentine's Day date she has gone on has been disasterous. I suspect it's partly because she adores the holiday so has expectations that can never be fulfilled. "I also wanted to mention to you that I was thinking about you last evening, oddly enough. :)" Wow! I'm so flattered! :D :D :D "I went to see Heart in concert, (Heart on Valentine's Day - see how they did that there? ha ha)" :D A perfect choice! "and I was thinking about you mentioning on the board that 'Alone' was one of your favourites." It is indeed. :D "So I resigned to record it for you!" I can't believe that. That's extraordinary! "But my camera had about 5% battery left, because I can be really stupid that way. You're not the only person who does things like that, I'm pretty bad with technology myself. I have to say that I am so incredibly flattered that you would try doing something like that. "Anyway, the show was fanstastic. Those women have not lost a note, and they both sound exactly like they did 30 years ago." I'm very envious. I can imagine that it would have been a great show. I'm really happy that you enjoyed the show. :D There are certain artists whom I would love to see (such as Heart), however it has been years since they've come to Australia, if they've done so at all. "The only video up on YouTube from the concert so far happens to be 'Alone', from someone far less moronic than I at taping. Check it out!" Amazing. They haven't changed at all! :D |
