Thanks to the wonderful audience recording that was shared on here, we know have the audience recording of Bohemian Rhapsody 11/24/81. After all, it looks like there was a little autotune work done for the official Rock Montreal release as the audience recording matches the verses on the We Will Rock You release. Also, the rock section is confirmed to have vocal overdubs from Freddie as neither We Will Rock You or Rock Montreal's vocal tracks match up with how he sings it on the audience recording. |

But the phrasing is different on Rock Montreal. |
jamster1111 25.12.2010 01:20 |
Greg: But these verses on the audience recording are identical to those on WWRY, proving that they in fact did use auto tune to fix up his voice. The phrasing is actually the same on this, WWRY and RM, the only thing different is RM has some notes corrected which actually make it sound way better. It's really hard to hit notes perfectly on key. |
Gregsynth 25.12.2010 01:27 |
Autotune has a fake "robo" effect on vocals. I hear nothing to suggest that. I'm betting my live savings that the "away" in the first verse was either overdubbed, or patched in from the second night. The way he begins and ends that word is different from Montreal, to the audience source/WWRY version. I can prove that by slowing each version down, fixing the pitch on the WWRY version, then uploading it on Queenzone. |
jamster1111 25.12.2010 01:48 |
Greg: Yeah that'd be great if you could do that. We should get this solved. |

if you only apply auto-tune on the bad notes. this robot effect will not be noticable. Besides, this effect will only be prominent if the autotunes is overdriven.. thats when it starts to sound like Cher. |
Gregsynth 25.12.2010 09:37 |
Well, either way, there's no autotune on that note. |
12yrslouetta 25.12.2010 13:50 |
I thought after the gig, they take the masters back to the studio and rerecord the parts they want. All live stuff have overdubs and retouching. Thats just what happens. |
jamster1111 25.12.2010 14:43 |
Yes but that extra work done to his voice was not present on WWRY. I'm guessing for RM, since it was released a couple years ago and we know have the technology, it was just simply corrected with autotune. And Greg, he's right. You can do it so it doesn't have a robotic effect. That line is obviously autotuned. |
Gregsynth 25.12.2010 17:17 |
It's not autotuned. Yes, I'm aware that you can autotune without that "robotic" effect. But, I don't hear "minor" use on that line. |
jamster1111 25.12.2010 20:31 |
Greg: It has to be autotune or something similar. What else could it be. Trust me, I have autotune and that's exactly what it does. I've experienced with it myself and you could easily change one wrong note you sing and make it sound right without giving it any robotic or artificial sound. |
Gregsynth 25.12.2010 22:40 |
Yes, but my ears can detect "minor" use of Autotune. I don't hear it at all. |
Gregsynth 26.12.2010 00:55 |
OK, I just played the two files (WWRY with the note corrected, and Montreal's version). They don't match. They are sung very similar, but the phrasing is slightly different. It's a overdub or patchwork. |
Gregsynth 26.12.2010 01:45 |
OK, so here's the part that's under debate: This is the "away" part played on We Will Rock You (which matches the audience recording), then Rock Montreal (it's a very quick loop). Freddie was around half a semitone flat on the WWRY version, so I correct the pitch (which explains why the instruments sound different between the loops). As you can hear, they sound almost identical: BUT there are two key differences, on the Rock Montreal version, there is much more vibrato on the word. Also, if you pay attention to the release and fade on the word, there is a very slight sustain on the release on the Montreal release. On the WWRY version, there is a very slight amount of more vocal fade. This proves that one, no AUTOTUNE was used on that word (you can't tune up phrasing), and that the minor work done here, was some kind of edit (probably some microscopic patchwork). |

Besides, this effect will only be prominent if the autotunes is overdriven.. thats when it starts to sound like Cher. I beg to differ! Even when you apply auto-tune on a couple of words it is noticable. Eventhough you won't get the 'Believe' effect it is still noticable by a trained ear. As a voice will sing natural intervals, and not the tempered scale a piano (and therefor also an autotune) will use. An autotuned vocal will fix the notes to the piano tempered scales. If you want to hear autotune, listen to McCartney's Good Evening New York. It makes me so angry! |

Greg: To me they sound identical. But if what you said is right and that contains patch work, then explain what they did for the "live had just begun" and "now I've gone and thrown it all" lines. On WWRY he sings the exact same phrasing and timbre on the RM release but the WWRY has him singing a few flat notes there. |

I would've missed those differences, if I didn't slow down the audio. As for those other lines, I'll take a look at those. |

"Autotune has a fake "robo" effect on vocals" Only if you intend it to, which for some unfathomable reason, a lot of people do!? |
Gregsynth 26.12.2010 14:25 |
A lot of people use Autotune, cause they CAN'T SING! |
YannickJoker 26.12.2010 15:02 |
Gregsynth wrote: A lot of people use Autotune, cause they CAN'T SING! ====== Now that's bullshit. Autotune doesn't turn a bad singer into a good singer. It isn't magic, it can only improve a singer a little bit beyond what he can do. |
Gregsynth 26.12.2010 15:07 |
It's true though: If you can't stay on pitch while singing, and you need a device to "help" you, then you can't really sing. |
Gregsynth 26.12.2010 21:19 |
After comparing the lines in question on Bohemian Rhapsody. I have come to the conclusion that there are two forms of edits: Patchwork, and pitch correction (without autotune). On some lines, it's the exact same phrasing (with different pitches). My conclusion is that the pitch was brought up via Pro-tools (you can alter minor errors without affecting the actual sound), and patchwork (from either the second night, or overdubs from the original 1981 sessions)! |

AutoTune can be used for both pitch correction and for the "Robo" sound effect. Both are rubbish! The original "Rock You" VHS was sped up, as a result it sounded a semitone above the original key. |

Why is everyone suggesting they've used Antares Autotune, why not Celemony Melodyne? It's a whole lot better ;-) |
