Here is version 2 of my guide to the Queen demos/unreleased material. It’s been updated with some new tracks that have come to light recently (From the Italian Convention) and I’ve added the links for some tracks I shared a few weeks back. I’ve also added descriptions to all tracks that aren’t shared. To make it as easy as possible for people who used the last version here are a full list of changes: 1) Status of ‘You and I (Convention Recording)’ changed to ‘Shared’ and link added. 2) Status of ‘All Dead All Dead (Convention Recording)’ changed to ‘Shared’ and link added. 3) Link to upgraded version of ‘Coming Soon (Convention Recording)’ added. 4) Entry for ‘Don’t Stop Me Now (Convention Recording)’ added. 5) Entry added for ‘Innuendo (Convention Recording)’. 6) Entry and link added for ‘Don’t Try So Hard (Convention Recording)’. 7) Entry and link added for ‘Affairs (Convention Recording)’. 8) Entry and link added for ‘Grand Dame (Convention Recording)’. This includes all the material I have heard of; but nothing that has ever been released (So there's no Hitman/Butterfly/Guitar Hero stems etc.). I wanted to make this guide as clear as possible, so each track has a status to show how certain we can be it exists: 1) Shared: These tracks are available to all, and wherever possible I’ve included a download link. 2) Uncirculated: The track exists, and is in the hands of collectors, but it's not freely circulating. 3) Not recorded: We know that some tracks have been played at convention, but have never surfaced. It’s possible these are in the hands of a few people, but it’s always possible they were not recorded at the time. 4) In the vaults: We know the track exists, but as yet it hasn't seen the light of day 5) Rumour: This track may exist, or it may not. In some cases it is possible that the title is an alternative name for a known track. The simple rule is unless I have heard the track, someone I know and trust has heard the track, or there is a cast iron official source then it goes down as a rumour. This is supposed to be a dialogue, not a lecture, so please add any more information you can to this. If you have any information, but don’t want to share it in the open, then please contact me at jam_monkey@hotmail.com and I can post it on your behalf. I’ve added an * next to the tracks I’d like more information on. Queen: Keep Yourself Alive (De Lane Lea Demo) 3:44 Status: Shared Link: link Great King Rat (De Lane Lea Demo) 6:07 Status: Shared Link: link Great King Rat (Convention Version 1) 3:39 Status: Shared Link: link Great King Rat (Convention Version 2) 3:30 Status: Shared Link: link Liar (De Lane Lea Demo) 7:47 Status: Shared Link: link The Night Comes Down (De Lane Lea Demo) 4.24 Status: Shared Link: link Jesus (De Lane Lea Demo) 5:06 Status: Shared Link: link Silver Salmon 3:10 Status: Shared Link: link Polar Bear 4:35 Status: Shared Link: link Feelings 2:10 Status: Shared Link: link *Hangman Status: Uncirculated This is the track everyone wants to hear. Although played live in the early days Queen always denied a studio version existed, however one well know Queen collector owns a 10” Trident acetate containing just that. *Rock n’ Roll Medley Status: Uncirculated Early Queen concerts always finished with a Rock n’ Roll medley so it makes sense that they recorded a studio version. This is on another 10” acetate similar to Hangman, in the hands of the same collector. We don’t know exactly what songs it contains but Jailhouse Rock, Stupid Cupid and Bama Lama Bama Loo would seem to be strong contenders. Queen II: Nevermore (Convention Recording) 1:42 Status: Shared Link: link The March Of The Black Queen (Convention Recording) 6:43 Status: Shared Link: link Funny How Love Is (Convention Recording) 4:16 Status: Shared Link: link Sheer Heart Attack: Brighton Rock (Convention Recording) 4:06 Status: Shared Link: link Brighton Rock (Multi-track recording) Status: Shared Killer Queen (Multi-track recording) Status: Shared Tenement Funster (Convention Recording) 3:07 Status: Shared Link: link Flick Of The Wrist (Convention Recording) 3:17 Status: Uncirculated An (almost) instrumental version of the track, this appears to be fairly close to the album version, although some guitars are missing. Most of the backing vocals remain. *Stone Cold Crazy (Multi-track recording) Status: Uncirculated Of the five multi-tracks to find their way out of the vaults this is the one only that remains under wraps. I know a few people who claim to have it, but no one who’s willing to prove it. In The Lap Of The Gods…Revisited (Convention Recording) 2:58 Status: Shared Link: link Carousel 1:07 Status: Shared Link: link A Night At The Opera: Bohemian Rhapsody (Multi-track recording) Status: Shared A Day At The Races: Tie Your Mother Down (Convention Recording) 3:41 Status: Shared Link: link *You Take My Breath Away (Convention Recording) Status: Rumour Rumoured to be an early take with just Freddie on piano and vocals. Long Away (Convention Recording) 2:48 Status: Uncirculated This track is an instrumental of the song which seems very similar to the album version, if not identical. Due to an early fade the running time is about 45 seconds shorter than the album. You And I (Convention Recording) 3:49 Status: Shared Link: link Somebody To Love (Convention Version 1) 3:51 Status: Shared Link: link Somebody To Love (Convention Version 2) 1:21 Status: Shared Link: link News Of The World: All Dead All Dead (Convention Recording) 3:42 Status: Shared Link: link *Fight From The Inside (Convention Recording) Status: Rumour Described as an early take with some minor changes to the lyrics. Get Down Make Love (Multi-track recording) Status: Shared Feelings Feelings 1:54 Status: Shared Link: link Feelings Feelings (Convention Recording) 2:03 Status: Shared Link: link *Batteries Not Included Status: Rumour No details of this track are available, so who knows if it exists. Jazz: Jealousy (Convention Recording) 3:58 Status: Shared Link: link Let Me Entertain You (Convention Recording) 3:26 Status: Shared Link: link *Don’t Stop Me Know (Convention Recording) Status: Uncirculated/Not recorded There are a couple of sources that confirm this track was played at the convention. It is supposedly the drums/bass/piano backing track with no guitars or vocals, but I can’t confirm that. |

The Game: Dragon Attack (Instrumental) 4:15 Status: Uncirculated An instrumental version of this track appears on Queen: The Eye in a remixed form. This track is an instrumental of the album version. *Dragon Attack (Convention Recording) Status: Rumour Rumoured to be an early instrumental take of the track. You may see a track claiming to be Dragon Attack, but it is actually an early instrumental jam of ‘Coming Soon’ which has been mislabelled (See link below). Sail Away Sweet Sister (Convention Recording) 3:30 Status: Shared Link: link Sandbox (Convention Recording) 3:00 Status: Shared Link: link Coming Soon (Instrumental Jam) (Convention Recording) 3:11 Status: Shared Link: link *Play The Game (With Andy Gibb) Status: Rumour This rumour seems to have started in the Spring 1980 Fan Club Magazine. It mentions that Andy Gibb visited Queen in the studio and sung on an unfinished Freddie composition, although we have no way of knowing what track it was or if it still exists. Hot Space: Staying Power (Demo) 4:13 Status: Shared Link: link Dancer (Convention Recording) 4:04 Status: Shared Link: link Back Chat (Demo) 4:36 Status: Shared Link: link Back Chat (Convention Recording) 1:29 Status: Shared Link: link Action This Day (Demo) 3:41 Status: Shared Link: link Put Out The Fire (Convention Recording) 3:50 Status: Shared Link: link Life Is Real (Song For Lennon) (Demo) 3:31 Status: Shared Link: link Las Palabras De Amor (The Words Of Love (Demo) 4:28 Status: Shared Link: link Cool Cat (Demo) 3:39 Status: Shared Link: link Feel Like 5:00 Status: Shared Link: link *There Must Be More To Life Than This (Queen Version) Status: In the vaults A number of solo tracks started life with Queen. Greg Brooks confirmed in Freddie Mercury: The Solo Collection that a Queen version of this track exists, and we can only hope that one day it will be released. *Let Me Live (With Rod Stewart) Status: Rumour It’s been long rumoured that this track started life in the early 80’s as a collaboration with none other than Rod Stewart, but no evidence or official source is available. *Whipping Boy Status: Rumour One theory says this track is an alternative title for ‘I Go Crazy’, or it may be a whole new track. It’s all guess work really. The Works: It’s A Hard Life (Edited Convention Recording) 1:41 Status: Shared Link: link It’s A Hard Life (Full Convention Recording) 4:25 Status: Uncirculated This track features a different vocal take to the version found on ‘The Works’. The backing track would seem to be the same, although there is some extra piano and a count in at the start. An edited version of this convention recording has been shared, the full version remains uncirculated. Machines (Demo) 1:23 Status: Shared Link: link Keep Passing The Open Windows (Demo Version 1) 2:48 Status: Shared Link: link Keep Passing The Open Windows (Demo Version 2) 4:46 Status: Shared Link: link I Go Crazy (Convention Recording) 3:08 Status: Shared Link: link *Love Kills (Queen Version) Status: In the vaults Another Freddie track that started life with Queen, again confirmed by Greg Brooks in Freddie Mercury: The Solo Collection. *Man Made Paradise (Queen Version) Status: In the vaults Once more the existence of this track was confirmed by Greg Brooks in Freddie Mercury: The Solo Collection. *Man Made Paradise (Convention Recording) Status: Uncirculated/Not recorded We know from Brian’s website that this track was played at the 2001 convention. Supposedly only 50 seconds in length it has never surfaced, and we have no way of knowing of this is the most complete version of the track. *Is The World We Created (Piano Version) Status: Rumour As this track was by Freddie and Brian it makes sense that they recorded a piano and guitar version, but it’s all guess work again. I suppose we’ll just have to wait for the box sets! *Man On Fire (Queen Version) Status: Rumour An early track listing for ‘The Works’ on a tape cassette lists Man On Fire (Which ended up on Strange Frontier) as a track. If there is a Queen version I for one would love to hear it, but we don’t know how complete it is. *Let Me In (Your Heart Again) (Queen Version) Status: Rumour Another song listed as a track for ‘The Works’ on the famous cassette sleeve. I also heard somewhere that Greg Brooks confirmed a complete Queen version at the convention, but I can’t seem to find a source for that. For now we’ll have to make do with the Anita Dobson version. A Kind Of Magic: One Vision (Convention Recording) 2:22 Status: Shared Link: link Pain Is So Close Of Pleasure (Convention Recording) 4:33 Status: Uncirculated An early take of this song, the backing track is similar to the album except for the addition of some extra keyboards. There is a different vocal take, with some minor changes to the lyrics. Back To Storm 1:37 Status: Uncirculated A short, high energy demo which sounds a lot like it was written by Freddie. Featuring drums, bass, piano and some ad-libbed vocals it’s similar in style and pace to ‘Sandbox’. Little Boogie 0:42 Status: Uncirculated A short instrumental track featuring Freddie on piano. Very similar to ‘Back To Storm’ this seems likely to be an early version of that track. Tavaszi Szel Vizet Araszt (Rehearsal) 1:37 Status: Shared Link: link *Heaven For Everyone (Queen Version) Status: Rumour There is a persistent rumour that this track started life with Queen, but no proof seems to exist. The rumour maybe something to do with the fact that Freddie sings lead vocal on The Cross version. *Friends In Pain Status: Rumour Another rumour! I happen to think that there is some confusion going on here with ‘Friends Will Be Friends’ and ‘Pain Is So Close To Pleasure’ but I am guessing, as is everyone else. |

The Miracle: The Miracle Demo Medley 14:10 Status: Shared Link: link *Party (Convention Recording) Status: Uncirculated/Not recorded Another one of the tracks from the 2001 convention, as confirmed on Brian’s site. This is rumoured to be a stand-alone version of the track, rather like the shared ‘Khassoggi’s Ship’ recording, although no copy has ever surfaced. Khassoggi’s Ship (Convention Recording) 4:33 Status: Shared Link: link The Miracle (Demo) 1:45 Status: Shared Link: link I Want It All (Demo Version 1) 1:27 Status: Shared Link: link I Want It All (Demo Version 2) 3:18 Status: Shared Link: link The Invisible Man (Demo) 1:23 Status: Shared Link: link *The Invisible Man (Convention Recording) Status: Uncirculated/Not recorded Confirmed to have been played on brianmay.com, this track is said to be RT’s guide vocal. *Breakthru (Convention Recording) Status: Uncirculated/Not recorded Another track we know was played in 2001 thanks to brianmay.com. A supposed instrumental version, much heavier than the album version. Rain Must Fall (Edited Convention Recording) 1:10 Status: Shared Link: link *Rain Must Fall (Full Convention Recording) Status: Rumour The version of this recorded that has been shared is clearly cut. One collector told me the full version has another minute of material, but I have no proof of this. Scandal (Demo) 1:41 Status: Shared Link: link My Baby Loves Me 3:37 Status: Shared Link: link Hang On In There (Demo) 3:01 Status: Shared Link: link Stealin’ (Demo) 11:42 Status: Shared Link: link Hijack My Heart (Demo) 3:27 Status: Shared Link: link Too Much Love Will Kill You (Demo) 2:03 Status: Shared Link: link *Too Much Love Will Kill You (Convention Recording) Status: Uncirculated/Not recorded Another 2001 convention track rumoured to be a more complete demo than the shared version, with a longer guitar solo. A New Life Is Born 1:24 Status: Shared Link: link I Guess We’re Falling Out 2:37 Status: Shared Link: link Dog With A Bone 4:42 Status: Shared Link: link Dog With A Bone (Convention Recording) 6:03 Status: Shared Link: link Face It Alone (Convention Version 1) 1:39 Status: Shared Link: link Face It Alone (Convention Version 2) 1:50 Status: Shared Link: link *Face It Alone (Full Convention Recording) Status: Uncirculated The full version of this convention recording in supposed to be 10 minutes long and contain 3 versions of the track. Two of those versions have leaked (See above), but the rest of the recording is still highly sought after. Face It Alone (Demo Version 1) 5:20 Status: Uncirculated This version of Face It Alone is not a convention recording! Musically it is the same as the 2nd convention recording, but greatly extended. There are an additional 30 seconds at the start which included Freddie giving instructions to Brian; and an additional 3 minute guitar solo at the end. This is the most complete version of the track I know of. Face It Alone (Demo Version 2) 3:58 Status: Uncirculated Another non-convention version of this track, it features Brian experimenting on the guitar and is completely instrumental. Innuendo: Innuendo (Convention Recording) Status: Uncirculated Played by David Richards as the 2010 Italian Convention, this is apparently a ‘rough mix’ of the track, before it was mastered. Headlong (Demo) 3:15 Status: Shared Link: link *Headlong (Convention Recording) Status: Uncirculated/Not recorded Another 2001 convention track, this time with Brian’s guide vocal. If you listen carefully to the shared demo you can hear Brian singing as well as Freddie, so it seems reasonable to assume this is the same demo, but without Freddie’s vocal. Don’t Try So Hard (Convention Recording) 3:46 Status: Shared Link: link *Ride The Wild Wind (Convention Recording) Status: Uncirculated/Not recorded Again confirmed by brianmay.com, this track is rumoured to have RT’s guide vocal. Delilah (Demo) 4:13 Status: Shared Link: link Self Made Man 4:46 Status: Shared Link: link Self Made Man (Convention Recording) 4:19 Status: Shared Link: link My Secret Fantasy 2:34 Status: Shared Link: link Robbery 2:01 Status: Shared Link: link Affairs (Convention Recording) 3:26 Status: Shared Link: link Grand Dame (Convention Recording) 2:20 Status: Shared Link: link *Assassin Status: Rumour This rumour has been around for a long time, and never seems to go away. A couple of very bad fakes have surfaced over the years, but nothing else. If someone has this they are keeping it well under wraps, but I can’t be the only one to think this is just another title for ‘The Hitman’. *Freedom Train (Queen Version) Status: Rumour There are a lot of rumours about solo songs starting life with Queen, and this is just another one. Someone tried to sell me a very bad fake of this track once, so watch out. As far as I can tell there is no evidence this is real. 46664: The Call (Version 1) 4:16 Status: Shared Link: link The Call (Version 2) 4:35 Status: Shared Link: link *Say It’s Not True (Original Version) Status: In the vaults This is the only ‘46664’ track that hasn’t come to light, although of course we now have a version with Paul Rodgers. It’s a little disappointing original version wasn’t released as a B-side to the QPR single. |

I would have thought that Affairs and Grande Dame would have sparked some form of discussion on the board here. I for one have never heard them until I saw your links, thanks Jam Monkey. Are we getting complacent about new tracks? I think Affairs is a good idea...similar to I Guess We're Falling Out. But I can see why it would have been discarded, it has a few nice chords and an alright melody, but there is a boredom factor to it...hard to explain. Similarly I wouldn't be interested in a fully written, recorded and released version of My Secret Fantasy. Can't tell why that guitar solo is called Grand Dame, but it sounds like a Freddie title. No vocals...could have been incorporated into a different song to fill some gaps. No major suprises either... But it's always nice to hear some new sounds by the band. |

Freedom Train starting off as a Queen-track is not really a rumour. I asked Greg about this at the Dutch Convention in (I think) 2003 and he confirmed that it was started as a Queen-track. Probably very unlikely that we'll ever see this though...? |

From The Miracle Session: BROTHER OF MINE Written by Brian, has been a rumoured track for years. In 2005/2006 reveled to be a slow ballad thet may evolved into an officially released track by Queen/Brian ì's album |

Written in July 1984, during the session for Thank God It's Christmas, Brian's offering for a one-off holyday single actually turns out to be far superior to Roger's alternate, which was chosen instead . |

Thanks for the information Ale, I had heard the title Brother Of Mine before, but I wasn't sure where it came from. FriedChicken 22.12.2010 05:11 |
In my opinion, there's absolutely no reason to believe a song called 'Brother of Mine' may exist. The track came into existence around 2002 when a spanish Queenfan said he had it. But he couldn't trade, share the full track or a sample. Also the information that it was a ballad by Brian came from that same fan. Sorry for the Spanish Queenfans here, but back in 2001/2002 the only thing that Spanish Queenfans had to offer were lies and betrayal. Which makes the whole Brother of Mine story as hard to swallow as a piece of mango. |
Jam Monkey 22.12.2010 05:40 |
Thanks for your input Fried Chicken. This is exactly the reason I started this thread, to examine what we know and try and crush the common misconceptions. It's very easy for these rummours to get started, but if someone refuses to trade, share, or upload a sample of a track I guess we can put that one to bed. Come to think of it I have a track called Surrender To The City, anyone heard of it? |
GinjaNinja 22.12.2010 12:11 |
I think "Surrender To The City" was just a rumour started on here a few years ago. I think someone just took the line from the end section of MOTBQ and purported it be a demo that eventually became that part. Greg Brooks claimed that there was nothing in the archives under that name. He also said that the other rumoured demos, "Deep Ridge" and "Fly By Night" were also non-existent. They could perhaps exist outside of the archives, like "Hangman" for example, but it is highly unlikely that so many unused tracks would exist from that period, as they were scraping at the bottom of the barrel for Queen II in terms of tracks. |
Jam Monkey 22.12.2010 17:17 |
Sadly there are alot of wind up merchants out there who make this stuff up just to amuse themselves. |

There is absolutely no proof that a Hangman studio version exists. The source maybe a well respected Queen fan, but just claims that he says he has it are not good enough. |

Master of your Destiny 30.12.2010 15:23 |
Got some notes about the following stuff: I Was Born To Love You (1:41)... some Instrumental with strange Synths and Computer sounds. In the End some Freddie Vocals Too Much Love Will Kill You (Duet) Brian sings a Duet with a Women... There is also a Instrumental Demo, and one with only Brian on Vocals Keep on Running with Roger on Vocals To Man made Paradise: Got about 5 sec. from the Queen version I don't know if its unreleased but what about the real Intro of Thank God Its Christmas? |
Master of your Destiny 30.12.2010 15:45 |
I also think that theres a short Demo Extract from Delilah! |
Soundfreak 30.12.2010 15:50 |
I do not believe that too many interesting unreleased songs are in the archive. Cause if there were, "Made in Heaven" would not have turned out to have so many recycled songs from solo albums and b-sides. All those outtakes I have heard so far were rejected for good reasons. And the real good "left overs" were used on several solo albums. So all I really expect are some alternate takes of released songs. And there may be one or two surprises....but the dream of a "lost Queen" album in a way Springsteen fans live it these days with an album called "The Promise" made of high quality left overs from the late 70s will remain a dream.... |
Jam Monkey 30.12.2010 17:15 |
I think you're right Soundfreak. Freddie said in an interview that although they came up with lots of ideas in in the studio he preffered to only finish the songs that ended up on the album. This is certainly demonstrated in the outtakes we do have; while there are interesting to listen to there are most just half finished ideas. |

If you are interested in these recordings of course but I have to say, that I only got 5 sec. from Man Made Paradise, but if you want I could share the other recordings that I mentioned too. But one question...how safe is it to upload these demos? I dont want to get problems... ;-) |

I shared here my collection of demos a few years ago, never head any problem from "their side". Jam Monkey shared now an updated and more complete demo collection , and "they" probably don't make him any problems. I am sure that "they" aren't happy about the fact that these recording leak out, but the only protest from "their side" was when the multitracks appeared here |

Wasn't the alternate Man Made Paradise featured in the Untold Story documentary? |

Jam Monkey wrote: I think you're right Soundfreak. Freddie said in an interview that although they came up with lots of ideas in in the studio he preffered to only finish the songs that ended up on the album. This is certainly demonstrated in the outtakes we do have; while there are interesting to listen to there are most just half finished ideas. Indeed. I also think alternate takes are much more interesting than rejected songs. A rejected song is often in the form of a jam or a more fully worked on rough idea. While an alternate take of a song that ended up on an album offers the listener an insight into the working process of the band. |

I was at the 'The Cross' gig on 7 December 1990 at the Astoria and remember tow or three tracks from 'Innendo' being aired, but can't recall if these were the 'Hints of Innuendo' editions, or something else. My memory tells me it was certainly Innuendo and Headlong that we got - can anyone confirm if that was it, and which versions they were? Thanks! |
