I want to know what everybody's opinions are on this: I usually see "The Crazy Tour" being cited, but I've also seen other answers like "the 1981 Tour," "Hot Space Tour," and "The Magic Tour." While I think the Crazy Tour is his best overall vocal tour, The Magic tour scores high for me, because of the raw power Freddie developed, and his chest voice improved greatly. |

It's got to be the Crazy Tour for me- even though we've only got a few concerts you just feel like he can sing whatever note he damn well likes on that tour, and he frequently matches or surpasses the studio versions of songs. Gigs like Oakland 1980 are evidence that his voice was awesome on the game tour too, and you've got to love the Magic tour for its 'Mr.Bad Guy' levels of power. |

Freddie's voice on the Game Tour was awesome--especially the early gigs (like Oakland), and the 1981 gigs (South American/Mexican). A really underrated vocal gig for him would be Buenos Aires (the second night). He's got some nice chest power, and the STL from that gig is awesome! |

Crazy Tour or Queen-SHA tours. |
Gregsynth 19.12.2010 22:14 |
The European Hot Space leg should get a say (especially from Frankfurt onwards). |
jamster1111 19.12.2010 22:49 |
Ya but that's only counting Frankfurt onwards...you forgot about NA and Japan :) As far as consistency and performance I say the early tours (Queen-SHA) and Crazy Tour. The others either aren't completely consistent and don't have him in great voice the whole time. |
Gregsynth 19.12.2010 23:16 |
Wouldn't you say the NOTW Tour was consistent too (he only had like one weaker gig)? I'd say the Game Tour was consistent (minus the Japan gigs), and the Magic Tour was pretty consistent for the most part. |
plumrach 20.12.2010 07:18 |
i really like his voice on the european hot space tour, especially at milton keynes i like the rawness of his voice during the magic tour as well, he was struggling at certain times but he made up for that with massive energy |

My general opinion of his tours follow this order: 1. Hot Space Tour (Unparalleled soul and emotion poured out into every song. Only issue is Japan.) 2. Crazy Tour (As said above, "he can sing whatever damn well note he likes".) 3. Magic Tour (The raw power... IT BURNS!) 4. The Game Tour (Although Freddie starts to sound flat on higher notes, he can still "sing whatever damn well note he likes". However, Japan.) 5. News of the World Tour (Freddie's voice was in good shape for most of this tour, with only a few off gigs.) 6. Sheer Heart Attack Tour (They were still playing their asses off to impress everyone, and Freddie shows that attitude in the music.) 7. A Day at the Races Tour (Freddie was usually in pretty good shape on this tour.) 8. A Night at the Opera Tour (Usually in okay shape.) 9. Queen Tour (From the few available recordings we have, it sounds like they were trying their hardest all the time, especially Freddie.) 10. Queen II Tour (Pretty much the same as the Queen Tour, in my opinion. However, I find most of the gigs on this tour all sound the same.) 11. Jazz Tour (Freddie's voice never reached "good" levels during this because somebody decided it was a good idea to go on tour in the same month as the Jazz recording sessions. Also, Japan.) 12. The Works Tour (Oh, Works Tour. Where should we even start? "WORKS TOUR TAKE NOTES!!!!!!!!!1111!" -YouTube top comments. Also, Japan - had the best gigs on the tour, except for Rio and early 1984.) |

The Works - kidding haa Hot Space tour 100% The Magic tour for pure power.... Ah that man could sing |

flash00. wrote: The Works - kidding haaThe first three or so Works gigs were actually really good, as was Sun City and all of the Japan gigs. If you just look at those, the Works Tour is tops. (Shhhh! The 1984 stuff never happened!) |

Definitely prefer his voice in the 70's tours (minus a few Japanese gigs in '76 and '79). There are some hot gigs in the Game tour and Hot Space tour, but the setlists make it less enjoyable. |
MC_Sandman 21.09.2015 20:13 |
Yeah. He had a different, indescribable quality to his voice in the 1970s, but I still prefer his Hot Space and Magic voices. |

Just listened to rainbow and man HE sang! Just love White Queen. |
Oscar J 23.09.2015 14:09 |
The March version of White Queen easily eclipses the studio version, vocal wise. |
kosimodo 23.09.2015 14:09 |
And why? He was trying to sing beautifull back then, without His power. |

One thing we have to consider though is that the Works Tour didn't actually have as many "bad" gigs as the Jazz Tour, in terms of Freddie's vocal shape. Let's look at the Works Tour for a bit. On the Works Tour, the first four or so recorded gigs are actually pretty good (keep in mind we don't have Dublin 8/29/1984 yet). After that we have the third Birmingham, and that's where it shits itself. Including the third Birmingham, we then have six "bad" gigs until Milan 9/14/1984, and both Milan concerts are actually pretty good. Then we have Munich 9/16, which isn't good, but isn't bad, per se, since it's kind of inconsistent. After that we have Paris 9/18, which is shit, but after that we have Leiden 9/20, which is an okay concert. Then we have second Brussels, which is also shit, Hannover 9/22, which is okay, and Berlin 9/24, which is also okay. Frankfurt 9/26 is a good gig (by 1984 standards), Stuttgart 9/27 is frickin' amazing, and then both Vienna concerts are shit. After those we have only one available recording from Sun City, on 10/17, and that's an amazing concert. Okay, so that's 1984 covered. After that we have 1/12/1985 Rock in Rio, which was amazing, and then we have 1/19/1985 Rock in Rio, which was shit. Then they take a little break until the Aussie gigs, and our first available concert from the Aussie leg is Melbourne 4/19, which is pretty good, and Melbourne 4/20 is just as good as the first one. Sydney 4/26 is pretty good, and 4/28 is okay, but not good. Next we have Japan. Tokyo 5/8 and 5/9 are both amazing. 5/11 is okay, but nowhere near the level of the previous two concerts. Nagoya 5/13 is really good and Osaka 5/15 is pretty good as well. Our total comes to: Good gigs: 17 Okay gigs: 6 Shit gigs: 11 While this might not be the most accurate method of measuring the overall "goodness" of an entire tour, I still think that Freddie's voice had more average bad days on the Jazz Tour than on the Works Tour. In my next post, which I'll probably do sometime in the next week (since this one took fucking ages to do and the Jazz Tour will probably take even longer), I'll look at the Jazz Tour and we'll see how that adds up. |

However, a lot of people forget about America and Japan when talking about this tour, as well as those really early Euro Hot Space concerts. Voice cracks everywhere!) 5. Queen II Tour (Really good.) 6. Queen I Tour (Pretty much on par with the II Tour.) 7. Sheer Heart Attack Tour (Also good.) 8. News of the World Tour (Really pretty good. See my above descriptions.) 9. A Day at the Races Tour (Freddie wasn't daring, but usually wasn't bad either.) 10. A Night at the Opera Tour (Hit and miss.) 11. Jazz Tour (BAD BAD BAD.) 12. The Works Tour (WORST WORST WORST.) |

I think pretty much all Magic Tours are bad gigs, Freddie-wise. Not a fan of his tone, and actually find most gigs hard to listen to, even without considering how the shows are musically inferior in general to their 70's shows. |
