Hi
Can someone possibly let me know the answer to a question regarding the mastering of the Queen catalogue?
Presumably when they remaster a Greatest Hits collection (like the one Bob Ludwig has done for Jan 2011 release), they will just remaster the tracks on that compliation. When the remastered studio albums then follow later in the year, do they start the process over from scratch, or do they use the Greatest Hits tracks as a start, and remaster the remaining album tracks to match the properties of those tracks already done in the earlier mastering process?
Example:
When A Day At The Races is released in March, will that version of Somebody To Love be the exact same master as the January Greatest Hits, or will it be remastered again, giving us a further two remasters of that track?
Many thanks
I don't think there is any "rule" if they remaster single songs and albums, what has to be adjusted to what.
I guess the strategy is, to give an album or a compilation a certain "sound", that goes right through the album from beginning to end. So that some songs for example do not "drown in bass" while others sound very thin. No matter from what time or album they origin.
Sadly in recent years the only difference between several remasters of the same stuff were mainly in the EQ and compression. You can easily do that yourself with available programms - and of course with a little experience.
But don't expect any miracles when they sell you any more remastered Queen albums.....unless they are newly remixed from the original multitrack-tapes.
Yep.
They really need to be remixed so that they are clearer and brighter if nothing else.
It's been proved it can be done with some of the releases so far.
