Okay, I felt today that I should complete the Album discussion series. Sheer Heart Attack has not been discussed YET.
This album was the first Studio album by Queen I bought. And it very soon became my favourite (until Queen II came along). The mixture of style, emotions and moods and genres this album is one of the greatest 70s albums ever. It did see a change in Queen's career though with a move into a more radio-friendly style.
Brighton Rock - 10/10 - Not many better rock songs than this
Killer Queen - 10/10 - At the time, this was a new direction for Queen. But the song is so unique and crafted so well.
Tenement Funster - 10/10 - With the acoustic guitar at the begining to the riff this song is a fun one!
Flick of the Wrist - 10/10 - Mr Mercury showing off his writing skills with this one. Brian's guitar licks and backing vocals make it a fab song.
Lily of the Valley - 10/10 - A powerful, emotional but simple ballad
Now I'm Here - 10/10 - One of the Greatest Rock songs ever
In the Lap of the Gods - 10/10 - Mysterious, majestic
Stone Cold Crazy - 10/10 - Invention of a style - What else can you say>?
Dear Friends - 10/10 - A sweet lulaby
Misfire - 9/10 - Fun and just the right length
Bring Back that Leroy Brown - 9/10 - Queen showing off their versitilty
She Makes Me - 9/10 - Slow, Beatlesque ballad by Bri
In the Lap of the Gods 2 - 10/10- =The first of the Queen anthems.
you love these album discussions don't you?......The first side of Sheer heart Attack is also the album that made me a proper queen fan. Queen2 being the album that blew me away the most though. Queen were so out in the 80's, and never thought about them much, but my older brother left the Sheer heart Attack album on the turn table One day (this was about 1988) and for some reason I decided to give it a listen. Brighton rock blew me away, as did the rest of side A. The second side took a little longer to love. Almost every song is a nine or Ten for me. the only lower ratings are Misfire and She makes Me, but both are still cool tunes. about a 5 or 6 rating for those two.
A good album but not their best. It was a transition album from their earliest sound to the multi-layered masterpieces that were the Marx Brothers albums.
It is an uneven album with some great songs but a few clunkers.
1 Brighton Rock was nothing more than an extension of Son and Daughter and an attempt to put Brian's guitar solo on viny.
2 Killer Queen was their first mega-hit and really showed what they could do in the studio, which is interesting since Brian's guitar is practically missing from the song.
3 Tenement Funster is classic Roger. Just a little out of place yet interesting and memorable
4 Flick of the Wrist, a wonderful edgy song by Freddie. A precursor to Death on Two Legs
5 Lily of the Valley, a beautiful song that really shows off their studio wizardry
6 Now I'm Here, ya gotta have a concert staple. This song became a beast in a very short time
7 In the Lap of the Gods is an interesting song but one of the weaker ones on the album. I swear I saw them perform it on their ADatR tour in Chicago, but I can't find it on any setlists or boots from that tour.
8 Stone Cold Crazy is a great rocker. This was speed metal before there was such a thing. Didn't Freddie bring this song from Wreckage?
9 Dear Friends - I was 15 when I first heard this song. It do think it is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
10 Misfire - This is Johns first song on a Queen album, not his best but admirable non the less
11 Bring Back that Leroy Brown is a classic example of how Queen was not bound by any "rock" standards and could turn on a dime at any moment - great song.
12 She Makes Me - Now there's a head scratcher.
13 In the Lap of the Gods Revisited was their concert closer for a time. This is a great ballad, but not as great as some of their later ones.
I love She Makes Me. With the slow drums, quiet vocals, and droning guitars, it sounds like proto-Shoegaze.
The Brian May songs on this album are great.
Brighton Rock — 10/10 (great progressive metal song)
Killer Queen — 8/10 (although I think that this song is highly overrated, I just can't give to it lower points)
Tenement Funster — 10/10 (one of Roger's best songs)
Flick of the Wrist — 10/10 (my favourite from this album, and live versions with heavy riff are very good too)
Lily of the Valley — 10/10 (short but very catchy)
Now I'm Here — 10/10 (great rocker)
In the Lap of the Gods — 10/10 (great rock/opera crossover)
Stone Cold Crazy — 10/10 (powerful and funny thrash/speed metal)
Dear Friends — 7/10 (boring, it's good that it's short)
Misfire — 10/10 (great easy track, it's shame that this song is too short)
Bring Back that Leroy Brown — 10/10 (great and funny progressive rock ragtime/vaudeville-styled song)
She Makes Me (Stormtroopers in Stilettos) — 5/10 (boring and uninteresting, one of worst Queen's songs)
n the Lap of the Gods... Revisited — 10/10 (much better than We Are the Champions)
Stone Cold Crazy (1991 Bonus Remix by Michael Wagener) — 10/10 (bad as remix, it's good that there's no any general differences between original and this mix)
Stone Cold Crazy (Re-Produced by Trent Reznor) — 6/10 (too heavy outro and too electronic sound)
