QUEEN JOIN UNIVERSAL MUSIC AS BAND’S HISTORIC MILESTONE NEARS Island Records prepares 40th anniversary remasters of the quartet’s extraordinary catalogue LONDON, November 8, 2010 – Queen and Universal Music Group have signed an exclusive, long-term agreement on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the groundbreaking group’s formation, in 1971. With worldwide album sales of more than 170 million, No. 1 albums, singles and DVDs the world over, inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, over 700 concerts performed in every corner of the world including their historic appearance at Live Aid, and a Guinness Book of World Records award for the most successful UK album chart act in history, Queen represent one of the most remarkable, compelling stories in popular culture. Their music milestones include “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “We Are The Champions,” “We Will Rock You,” “Radio Ga Ga,” and “Another One Bites The Dust.” The new agreement with Universal Music covers the world outside North America, and the music of Queen will appear through Island Records from January 1, 2011. Thus, the band joins some of the greatest names in popular music under the palm tree of the legendary label’s iconic logo. Brian May of Queen said, “We are very excited, after all this time, to be embarking on a new phase of our career – with a new record company – with new ideas, and new dreams.” Universal Music Group (UMG) co-CEO Lucian Grainge said: “Queen rewrote the rock & roll rule book 40 years ago, and you can count at least three generations of artists who are under their influence. So now we’re under their influence at Universal Music, and looking forward to writing chapters together for the new rule book.” UMG International COO Max Hole commented, “A band of Queen’s stature, and a catalogue with such appeal, present an immense opportunity for a new creative approach. We aim to apply fresh thinking and innovation to the marketing and promotion of this great body of work. Ted Cockle, Darcus Beese and their team at Island Records are the perfect match, and everyone can’t wait to get started.” During the course of the anniversary year, Island will remaster and repackage, with additional content, each of Queen’s 15 studio albums. The first five will be made available in March: “Queen,” “Queen II,” “Sheer Heart Attack,” “A Night At The Opera” and “A Day At The Races.” After four decades, the collective work of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon continues to resonate around the globe, inspiring a host of diverse artists from Lady Gaga (who took her name from Queen’s “Radio Ga Ga”), Axl Rose and Katy Perry through to Dave Grohl. Two decades after the death of their phenomenal and flamboyant singer, Freddie Mercury remains an icon beyond measure. The 40th anniversary celebrations begin with a major Queen exhibition in London, “Stormtroopers in Stilettos,” opening in late February. This will be followed by a BBC-TV documentary and the production of a major Hollywood film about the band, starring Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury. Acclaimed script writer Peter Morgan (“The Queen,” “Frost/Nixon”) is working on the project, which is being produced by GK Films, Robert de Niro’s Tribeca Productions and Queen Films. |

Thanks GT. Can you shed any light on what kind of addtional material we can expect? Demos/remixes/live etc? Having all these albums already it would be great if the die hard fans were given a really good reason to buy these releases. Great to see some real Queen activity though! |
Vali 08.11.2010 06:56 |
Thanks Gary, looks promising! and I agree with Jam above ... could it be possible to, at least, know if the bonus content on the albums will be something we've never heard or seen before? I'm not requesting detailed info, just a generic one that maybe could be enough for many of us .... many tks |
scprof 08.11.2010 07:02 |
It would be good if they re-released all the albums as double albums with the 2nd disc full of live & remix versions of the original album songs along with any none album B-sides, although I can't see that happening as usual. If not, why should I buy any of the albums. |
GT 08.11.2010 07:20 |
Sorry, no final decisions have been made yet, but when the details emerge then we can discuss. |

2011 – QUEEN 40 – Major Exhibition, Hollywood Film, BBC Documentary, Back Catalogue re-release to celebrate 40th Anniversary 2011 sees one of the most talented, glamorous and influential bands in musical history, QUEEN, celebrate the 40th anniversary of their formation in 1971. With over 170 million global album sales, 18 Number One Albums, 10 Number One DVD’s, 700 concerts performed in every corner of the world including their historic appearance at Live Aid, Seven Ivor Novello Awards, inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame and a Guinness Book of Records award for the most successful UK album chart artist ever, the Queen story is one of the most remarkable in modern British culture. 40 years after Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon formed Queen and the band became the epitome of rock n roll swagger and excess Queen continues to rule globally. The 40th Anniversary year kicks off with a major exhibition, ‘Stormtroopers in Stilettos’ – a comprehensive look at the early part of Queen’s career, from before the band’s formation when various members were dreaming of success while studying astrophysics or running stalls next to Biba in Kensington Market, right up to their spectacular free gig for over 250,000 fans in Hyde Park in 1976. Taking place in Trumans Brewery in the heart of London’s East End the exhibition opens on February 25th running through to March 12th, and will cover the group’s first five albums from the first half of the 1970’s. The exhibition will aim to take visitors to the heart of Queen by combining interactive audio and visual environments with historic and never-before-seen memorabilia; themed rooms and music all created from the bands personal archive will come together to create an exciting, entertaining and engaging insight into the foundation and rise of the global super group Queen became. Newly signed to legendary label Island Records and to coincide with the exhibition, the first five albums that Queen released – “Queen”, “Queen II”, “Sheer Heart Attack”, “A Night At The Opera” and “A Day At The Races – will be re-mastered and re-packaged into special deluxe album formats. From the pure raw rock of “Queen” through to the majestic anthems on “A Day At The Races”, the first five albums highlight the diverse talent, musical ambition and already global success of a band made up of some of the best songwriters, musicians and performers of all time. The remainder of the band’s incredible catalogue will be released during 2011.Subsequent to the exhibition there will be a major BBC TV Documentary featuring a rare interview with Roger Taylor and Brian May and many other surprises and releases to come through the rest of the year. 2011 will see filming begin of a major Hollywood movie about Queen, starring Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury. Acclaimed script writer Peter Morgan (“The Queen”,” Frost/Nixon” ) is working on the project, which is being produced by GK Films, Robert de Niro’s Tribeca Productions and Queen Films. After four decades, the collective work of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon continues to resonate around the globe, inspiring a host of diverse artists from Lady Gaga (who took her name from Queen’s “Radio Ga Ga”), Axl Rose and Katy Perry through to Dave Grohl. Just the old source and mix them again. So nothing new really. The final mix is the final mix. We can all play with the treble or bass buttons on our receivers. |

Brilliant business from the band. They signed to Hollywood Records just before Freddie died and they released the back catalogue with some good, some not so good remixes. Then there were the Japanese card reissues now Universal are releasing the back catalogue yet again. Why? All hardcore fans already have the albums. There must be enough for a Freddie era ep surely. Dog with a Bone, Feelings, News of the World era BBC versions, Hangman, Silver Salmon, See What a Fool I've been for starters. If they want more Freddie vocals I would suggest re recording heavy rock versions of Love Kills, She Blows Hot and Cold. |

I'm only done with these remasters and re-re-re release and promises of Greg Brooks with his list of rareties (a.k.a the carrot dangler tread) etc. These topics make me curious, but when reading I feel very quick that it may turn in the same short route of moneymaking to QP. See the replies of other user on this tread and you know what I mean. C'mon: Classic Queen, Absolute greatest etc. Basically I lost my trust and faith a bit in the management of Queen. Sure.... we are all glad with releases as the Wembley DVD, Greteast Video Hits 2 DVD. I must admit that But compared in the various topics about releases between Queen and other great Bands, QP fail . Therefore I hope the new label will give them new paths to explore and regain the credit they deserve. |

All the 70's album could use a decent re-master. If Universal replicate the sound produced on Queen Live at Montreal then I think the fans will be in for a treat. If its a repeat of that thin drum sound often found on albums like Jazz and Live Killers forget you might as well forget this project in its infancy if we are going to get the same old dated mono output. Nice phat Stereo sound please with loud guitars, crisp drums, and groovy bass not least the golden velvet tones of Mr Fredstar himself. Innuendo could use a decent remix too, tone is nice but instrumentation is so quiet and seems distant. Dedicated Queen Fan |
pittrek 08.11.2010 11:19 |
I think that only Jazz and Innuendo need a proper remaster, I'm satisfied with the sound of the other albums |

Well given the fact that it took The Beatles over 25 years to release their Anthology and The Who also about 30 years to release bonus tracks, we can only hope now that finaly there is something new under the sun. I would love to have a Queen 1 with Silver Salmon, Mad the Swine, Hangman, Polar Bear etc and Queen 2 with live recordings. You would think that Greg has had enough time to prepare everything. But we have to wait and to protect myself I just don't hope for anything. |
cmsdrums 08.11.2010 11:54 |
I'm excited at the prospect, but worried about the reality (based on previous form). however, trying to be 'up' and supportive of GT's early active involvement in pushing this here: A major BBC documentary? Excellent A major exhibiton in London? Great Deluxe edition albums with unreleased tracks? Excellent More to come in 2011? Bring it on! I wonder if any heed has been paid to Deep Purple reissuing one of their classic albums recently with the original version (remastered), plus an additional remix of the whole album by one of the best rock producers/mixers (Kevin Shirley)? Whilst the mix on most albums is actually as perfect as you can get, the first two albums at least deserve a remix (NOT remaster) to give them proper drum sounds and bring out anything buried in the original versions. |

He's just sick of being shafted, as everyone else should be... but people will lap up the same stuff again and again which is why they release the same stuff again and again. Clever business at the end of the day I suppose. |

I'm hoping that they will release the christmas concert from 75 as a bonus part of a night at the opera. This might explain why they have not released it yet. Sort of like Springsteen did with the darkness album just now. But this is of course just wishful thinking. It would be great though, if they did something like this to their re-release of the albums. Kniggit |

Be careful what you ask for. Remasters are basically making the music louder. it sounds impressive at first, but ear fatigue happens qwuick. Remasters are the biggest rip off. i learned the hard way. Only a few remasters are actually any good. Google and you tube "loudness war" and you will see what i mean. Just turn up the old CD's to hear funny things like bass. |

Is there any way to de-1980s the sound on The Works and AKOM? Maybe add real strings, real drum sounds etc. And maybe put some fire back into the Red Special? I'm only half-joking about this. No doubt Queen got lazy and greedy in the 80s, not wanting to pay royalties to real musicians when a computer could create an approximation of that sound. But god does it sound dated and cheesy. I'd love to see a reworked version of some 1980s songs but no doubt Brian in particular thinks of them as works of art that can't be touched. Same goes for Queen 1 and Jazz, which Brian seems to think are historical documents which shouldn't be 'tampered' with. |

@GT... any confirmation on who is doing the remastering for these re-issues? Thought i'd read that Brian thought AG was the best their stuff had ever sounded, and perhaps someone else saying that Bob Ludwig was tapped to remaster new 2011 albums. Now, dynamic range on CDs is a subjective thing... I've said before, I like the punchy / compressed sound of AG... but I love the utterly uncompressed spacious mix in the MFSL Queen releases. It's not just about loudness. I'm actually a big fan of remastered 80s or 90s cds that bring the bass and drum presence forward. But these things can also bury the vocal at times. Am I the only one concerned about the overall sonic results of these reissues if Bob Ludwig does them in the same way he did AG? Especially if he's remastering the unreleased tracks this way... I have to say I'll be holding onto my bootleg versions if the ONLY official way to hear the BBC sessions, De Lane Lea, etc. is in squashed and pumped up form... |

Let's face it - Universal aren't stupid. They know that the game's up as far as on-going interest in Queen is concerned; Cosmos Rocks wasa commercial disaster in terms of numbers sold in the key US and UK markets and with the way that Brian is increasingly marginalising himself with regard to his musical profile these days, they know that this is kind of a last-ditch attempt at being able to realistically re-issue Queen's catalogue with a market available at which to aim it. With a bit of luck, QPL are playing ball where access to material is concerned. Chances are; they're holding back. As far as I'm concerned, I'll buy any deluxe re-issue (so long as it doesn't contain a "making-of" DVD) up to and including Hot Space. |

On one hand I hope/think/can't believe that Universal would just remaster the albums and repackage them. Queen are not the Beatles. Yes, they are/were are big band - but the general public will not buy any of the Queen albums if they can just get Hits 1 + Hits 2 for a bargain price I think. I'd be interested to see how many copies were sold of the 30th anniversary ANATO 2-disc set. But somehow I can't believe that Queen Productions will suddenly give up the goods and release 'new' material. I wouldn't be surprised if the albums include only the b-sides/single versions which are already remastered for the singles collection sets. And to be honest - I'd be pretty excited already about a repackaged and hopefully remixed Queen II with See What A Fool added on as a bonustrack, a nice thick booklet with quotes/information/pictures from that era and a beautiful digipack. I can't even imagine how I would react if tracklists leak out in 3 months with demos/alternate versions/takes/instrumentals! :) |

Tb be fair thought, we had to fork out to import all the lovely Hollywood records stuff from 1991 onwards!!! I'm sure that once the Hollywood deal expires (anyone know when??) QPL will have held some rare material back so that they have some leverage to get the best new deal with whoever wants the rights to their North American catalogue. We (Europe) will then have to shell out the dosh again to get those re-releases! It all seems to go round in circles!! |

For the first time since the late 1980s, Queen's catalogue will have the same distributor worldwide, as their US home, Hollywood Records, is currently distributed by Universal (for a time in the late 1980s, Queen was on EMI-owned Capitol Records in the US). This is one thing I saw in a press release, so maybe the USA will get the deluxe editions. I'd like disc one: the album and any non album b-sides from the singles from that album. Disc 2 can be unreleased songs, demo's and live versions. I'd shell out the money one last time, but ultimately I'd like a Box set instead of re-releases... |
chromant 13.11.2010 04:56 |
We can only hope that QP will not screw things up again, and we will get something similar to the U2/Cure deluxe editions....but you know Brian and Roger....they'll think that any repackage, remix and what not is better than any unreleased song... Was it for me I'd do, first, a proper, DEFINITIVE, album box, like the Beatles mono, that in particular, because the mono one has perfect reproductions of the original LPs link so, no other "crap"...classy and good album editions.... and then a "regular" deluxe edition, with, again a filological, nicely done inclusion of all the original remixes, edits, b-sides and outtakes...and no 5.1, surround or wahtever mixes....was the Sistine Chapel intended for 3D view? No... When they recorded and mixed News Of The World where they thinking "I wonder what it would be like to hear this passage on the fourth speaker..."? Again, no... Or everybody say "Innuendo sounds flat etc..." well that's how they wanted it to sound in 1991, so I don't see what it has to be remastered or remixed. What I'd like to hear would be "The best sonic representation of the sound of that particular year" not some modern day remix South Park got it right, in "The China Problem" episode...you don't have to screw with what has been done... link Just to warm my heart (or to get more pissed off at Queen releases) I regurarly check Deep Purple.net ...where other than nicely, and I should add lovingly, done remasters, there's the archivist Simon Robinson, who ask fans for advice about future releases, where no-one is angry and everybody partecipate in the "construction" of the remasters and compilations...case in point...right now they're discussing about the release of the BBC sessions...and everybody give thier suggestions...and Simon kindly answers...no one gets "Shut UP, I can't tell you what's in the archives, I'm not the one who decides, I'm the archivist, I'm the only one to know what is true..." and things like that.... ...Brian and Roger...or whoever has the final say on the releases, think the same way as Alan Douglas (the old Hendrix estate manager), i.e. "I don't care what people think, I'm gonna do it my way...it's the Greatest Hits that sells well? Well I'm gonna release another Greatest Hits. Younger fans think that doing a collaboration with Britney or 5ive is cool? We'll give them that..." ....patiently waiting for "Greatest Hits Volume - Another One" |
