Haven't watched this and don't plan to. It's no one's business but theirs. Show some class. |

I don't even have to click it to know it's a great English comedy bit I've seen a couple of times before. Telling people to show some class when you don't even know what you're talking about isn't that classy. |

Actually, GF, responding the way I did to an invitation phrased the way it was shows a great I have principles for which I will not apologize. My response would have been different if the poster had been clear about what he was sharing. I also don't click on links inviting me to witness other peoples' humiliations or injuries. |

The fact that you clearly really didn't click on it shows you are a person of principled action as well as words, which is commendable. I can't stand watching most reality shows or America's Funniest Home Videos for the same reason, so perhaps we have something in common. Those princples were well expressed with your statement that you weren't going to watch it and that you felt it was their business and their business only. But telling the original poster to show some class goes beyond that. This is an unmoderated forum with a stated commitment to freedom of expression. It's not your role to make anyone feel small for posting a topic that by definition was of interest to them. The community gets to vote on the worthiness of topics here, and they vote with their engagement in the thread, or not. Threads that are not of interest to the community die a natural death, unaided by bullying by self-appointed moderators. |

Perhaps I care too much about this forum. I percieved a marked drop in taste and commented on it. The people here, yourself included, have far too much to offer to allow sensationist crap become acceptable. It's great that you had the insight to know the link was merely a comedy routine. If it had been an actual video of Brian and Anita arguing, would we even be having this discussion? A bully intimidates for control. I called upon the poster's (and readers') conscience and sense of decency. I didn't say no one should watch this. I expressed my contempt. If these forums are a democracy, then people have the right to ignore me. If their principals conflict with mine, fine. We are allowed to disagree. It won't stop me from taking a moral position, challenging others' whom I feel are questionable and expecting mine to be called into question (and I will defend everything I say in these posts). |

You're not the arbiter of what is valuable to this forum, what is in good taste or of interest to people who aren't you. Freedom of thought and inclusiveness are much more important to the common good than the arbitrary projection of your sense of decency. If it had been an actual video of Brian and Anita arguing I'd be at this twice as hard because the principle would be that much more important. This isn't the first such conversation I've had here. You are of course free to do whatever you please, but if you belittle a poster in the future in this manner and for this purpose it will be just as classless and counter to the spirit of this place as it was this time, and if I'm still around you'll likely hear from me again. |

Tangentially related, check out this jaw dropping and entertaining list of posting rules from the Democratic Underground. You can scroll down past the blah blah if you like to the list of rules and violations. I can't imagine who would be interested in posting word one in such an oppressive environment. My favourite 'violation' is referring to Barack Obama as 'Barry'. (!) http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8603151 |

Holy sh*t, talk about over-egging the pudding - how can you be arsed to type so much over this thou dost protest too much! Maybe the tone of the site has gone down a bit - not sure as I don't read the posts or click on the links. Never post anything like that myself. |

GF, it's amazing how three words I said caused you get into such a state. Take a deep breath, my friend. You keep saying I'm bullying people, imposing self-styled moderation and trying to be an arbitrator. I think you're giving me far too much ambition. Not once EVER have I said something should not be posted on these forums. It seems the only issue you have with what I said is the fact that I said it, that moral outrage should be kept to myself. It's rather parnoid if you equate such outspokenness with an attempt at policing this forum. If people are fine with gossiping on cheap tabloid headlines, nothing I say will desuade them. If they read my reaction, or anyone else's, and have some epiphany that maybe they've compromised their own moral code, it does not demonstrate any power on my part. The only person they answer to is themselves. Your reaction to my reaction has told me a great deal about your character and your acceptable level of tolerance. |

It does seem like a bit of overkill in the harsh light of the next day. My own extreme distaste for what I perceive as pompous moralizing got the better of me to an extent. I shouldn't have turned your thread that was supposed to be fun into an argument that probably wasn't worth it. So sorry for that. |
