they were part of a movement that "shook" the music establishment.
beyond the never mind the bollox album, initial tv appearance(s) and tour there wasn't much. once you're shocked it doesn't shock you again.
they tackled some very difficult themes in their songs....
digs at the monarchy in jubilee year, abortion, nazi germany (hear the jackboots in holidays in the sun), even a shot at emi who dumped them....
remember sid couldn't play bass, and this album is as good as it gets. when you cut away the anger you can hear great rock n roll tunes underneath....great stuff
but don;t venture beyond NMTB, because after that they become a sex pistols tribute band and then finally an end of pier parody of themselves. don;t get me wrong, there's fun in the great rock n roll swindle. but it's drowned out by all the dross.
Can't say I appreciate them much - they were waaaay too commercial, and Johnny Rotten is one of the most racist individuals I have ever had the displeasure of encountering. I'll take The Clash any day.
The Sex Pistols only brought attention because of their controversial personalities and the shock value they put into their act. If we speak of music quality it really didn't have much to offer.
Punk itself was the rock genre that required the least skill and talent per say. Pretty much every single 'Ramones' song sound exactly the same, and that goes for the majority of punk acts. I have to give props to The Clash for being more versatile.

How is John Lydon racist?
Anyways...
I think Mr. Lydon is a cool dude. I love PIL more than the Sex Pistols.
"What's it all about, they scream and then they shout! Don't ask me, 'cause I don't know!"
TQ calling someone a racist? Now that's funny.
I assumed he was going to let us know that The Sex Pistols were the next Hitler... and that he likes 'em.
Regarding racism :
Belsen was a gas I heard the other day
In the open graves where the jews all lay
Life is fun and I wish you were here
They wrote on postcards to those held dear
Oh dear
Sergeant majors on the march
Wash the bodies in the starch
See them all die one by one
Guess it's dead guess it's glad
So bad
Be a man be a man Belsen was a gas
Be a man kill someone kill yourself be a ma

When he got drunk, he had the unfortunate habit of throwing out racial slurs. There are a number of incidents that got into the type of papers that like such things (The Sun has two separate incidents in July 2008, one where he got drunk and started singing racist songs, which was probably a bit overhyped, and one where he beat up and slurred a member of Bloc Party, which was definitely not overhyped), and in the early 1980s there were another few incidents where, whether intentional or not, Johnny Rotten came across as awfully friendly with racist skinheads who came to the shows.
Calling him a racist offends him, and his grandchildren. He just might sue you!
Ehh, really though, he's always drinking up a storm. And smoking up a fire.
I watched "There'll Always Be An England", the live show from Brixton on Sky Arts last night. These days they sound more hard rock than some rock bands do.
My fave Johnny Lydon moment will always be the moment he uttered the word "cunts" live on Im A Celebrity sending those two prats Ant and Dec into a right old dizzy........
^yep, for all the rock and roll antics that Johnny Rotten did in the 70's he is gonna be best remembered now for calling ant and dec cunts live on tv,being pecked by emu's in a jungle and running through a field holding a tub of butter being chased by a cow.
Who said Punk was dead...?
Sid would be turning in his grave over Johnny selling out for the money if he wasnt still being piped through the air conditioning ducts at Heathrow airport :-p
But thats the thing Jon, Lydon has never hidden the fact that he does things these days for money. He said recently if that it hadnt been for those buttter ads he does, which I also find funny, PIL would never have reformed. Even back in the day they took EMI's £4,000,000 off them because they could. Cracking bit of business that.

Sid is boring. He was nothing.
Can't stand punk bands. I like the idea of them. The philosophy is sound. But the bands themselves suck. They don't realise, for one thing, that people had already done the punk thing, and lived that ideal 10-15 years previously, and at the same time they'd actually managed to make GOOD music. Not caring what people think of your art is admirable. Not caring about what you're doing is just stupid.
