Since we've been discussing studio pictures, I have a few other pics here that remain unidentified. They appear to be from a TV shoot, circa 74-75. It has been said that Queen performed Now I'm Here on Top Of The Pops in early 1975. Is that what these pictures are from? Note that there's a drum kit of a band called "Hello" behind the stage.. |
The Real Wizard 04.06.2010 13:33 |
Another, from the same video shoot.. |
The Real Wizard 04.06.2010 13:34 |
And this is an entirely different video shoot. Any idea where this one is from? |
cmsdrums 04.06.2010 13:37 |
Nice pics, although I have no idea where they are from! It's strange to see brian on the opposite side of the stage! |
brENsKi 04.06.2010 13:44 |
think the first one is from oct/nov 74 - Killer Queen promo. Not sure if it was for a european pop programme called "top Pops" ibut the timeline matched the drumkit for the band HELLO - whon only had two hits - "tell him" and "new york groove" tell him - nov 74 new york groove - oct 75 therefore it's nov 74 and killer queen promo |
pittrek 04.06.2010 13:44 |
The last one is from BBC in 1975/1976 - that's what I think from the B in the box on the camera at the bottom right corner. Can this be from the famous Top Of The Pops performance of Now I"m Here which I read about but never found any evidence it exists ? |

This has caused a problem for a long time now. The first two pics are from 1974 but nobody seems to know where the photos were taken. Myself, Greg Brooks, Jim Jenkins and Ratty can't seem to decide where it is from. I thought it was an unseen 'Killer Queen'....but from where? It's not the Dutch show 'Top Pop' as it is totally different. The second is more than likely 'Now I'm Here', either from 'Top Of The Pops' or '45'......but both performances were erased by the TV companies involved. So unless these photos have been captioned and properly archived then a bit more detective work is needed. Any more ideas? |
brENsKi 04.06.2010 16:31 |
yes. i'm sticking with my first idea re: Killer Queen and "HELLO - "Tell Him" - the time/dates fit correctly. as regards Top Pop you are right. On the old vhs of that (that i had) freddie is wearing what looks like a fake fur jacket. also there are more coloured lighting however, to muddy the waters further (sorry) - found this link a Killer Queen promo - same studio but different clothing for all of the band...weird and here's the link to the video - think it could be the dutch tv show top pop link another different Killer Queen promo link and as the original photo uses the same stage layout...maybe it is "now i'm here" on top pop? |
GT 04.06.2010 16:38 |
Yes, this version of 'Killer Queen' is from 'Top Of The Pops' and is on all the official Queen video releases. |
brians wig 04.06.2010 17:52 |
I've always thought that "Now I'm Here" was taken from the Rainbow concert. So, is it DEFINATE then that this WAS a proper Top Of The Pops appearance???? |

Brenski Your first video is from 'Top Of The Pops'. Your second video is from 'Top Pop'. |

Pittrek Queen's 'Now I'm Here' appearances on 'Top Of The Pops': "Also in January the band make another appearance on 'Top Of The Pops' to pre record a filmed performance of 'Now I'm Here' in the studio. This appearance would be shown on the programme on January 30th and repeated on February 13th. Since then it is still believed that this footage has been erased and forever lost". |

GT wrote: "The second is more than likely 'Now I'm Here', either from 'Top Of The Pops' or '45'......but both performances were erased by the TV companies involved." Right, because the BBC kept taping over their stuff in the 70s, since most people didn't really care to preserve footage back then. So nobody taped this off TV, because it just wasn't too popular a song (like Seven Seas Of Rhye the previous year) ?? |
GT 05.06.2010 00:24 |
And also the general public did not have video recorders then. Maybe one day it (Now I'm Here) will rear it's head like the three 'Seven Seas Of Rhye' appearances on 'Top Of The Pops'. |
Fmarton 05.06.2010 01:04 |
Two days ago I corrected a mistake on Sebastians Mistakes topic. It was about the second picture. This is what I wrote : "Another little thing that's debatable is the date of the picture with John with the Rickenbacker bass, from the debut album section. This picture is definitely not from 71-72 , but most likely from the Now I'm here Top of the pops appearance. Here is the link with other pictures from that show.: link . There we can see the drum kit of the band Hello. They released a single called Games Up in February 75. Now I'm here had it's first chart appearace in late January. So it's the most logical conclusion is that the picture is from Now I'm here TOTP." |
GT 05.06.2010 01:13 |
I originally thought that this pic (with FM in red jacket) was 'Now I'm Here' from 'Top Of The Pops' but Jim Jenkins said it wasn't, and GB thinks he has seen a performance of 'Killer Queen' with FM in this jacket (but has yet to be found). |

I've done some research (about a year ago) into this in the past, even writing to Bob (Hello's singer) about this. He says he can't ever remember being on the same show as Queen and that he would reply in more detail later, as he was on tour. I heard nothing so wrote again but although I got another response from someone managing the site, he never did respond. These were the only two singles that charted in the UK by Hello and Queen's appearance can't coincide with New York Groove release for obvious reasons (Bo Rhap). Games Up never charted in the UK and therefore wouldn't have been included on TOTP. Which leaves 'Tell Him', in terms of timing. However, I also think this is a European pop programme but possibly a German one. I say this because of the Hello connection again: they were huge in Germany and even relocated there when singles failed to chart in the UK. Queen were touring in Germany in early December 1974 (4 dates). So could they have done German TV with KQ at this time? On this short two and a half week tour they also played single dates in other countries (Gothenberg, Helsinki, etc) but I know that Tell Him charted in Germany, so I'm going for that possibility |

The second video appears in its original PAL format on a VHS tape I have entitled Rock Idols (Video Gems). The only info given on the back is Glenwood Music Corp. There is a copy on ebay link If you look at the actual cue sheet download from the thread below I think you will find it was filmed on 22nd November 1974 link |
Mkls 06.06.2010 02:40 |
We have discussed these pictures a few years back here (unfortunately I cannot search my postings before 2007, were all posts losts???) . The drumskin of HELLO, and the BBC TOTP database (link - the searchable database is NO longer available! ) offered the exact date and match with Queen's performance on the same day. |
Mkls 06.06.2010 03:16 |
link with a bit of luck i have found the topic i was referring to from 2005... 21th Nov 1974, Killer Queen. + Hello . and the original database (song/date/show presenter/studio performance/survives?) : Seven Seas Of Rhye 21st February, 1974 Emperor Rosko Performance Seven Seas Of Rhye 14th March, 1974 Noel Edmonds Performance Seven Seas Of Rhye 28th March, 1974 Dave Lee Travis Performance Killer Queen 11th October, 1974 Paul Burnett Performance Killer Queen 24th October, 1974 Dave Lee Travis Performance Killer Queen 7th November, 1974 Jimmy Savile Repeat Performance Killer Queen 21st November, 1974 Noel Edmonds Performance Killer Queen 27th December, 1974 Noel Edmonds, Dave Lee Travis Performance Yes Now I'm Here 16th January, 1975 Noel Edmonds Performance Now I'm Here 30th January, 1975 Tony Blackburn Perfomance Now I'm Here 13th February, 1975 Noel Edmonds Repeat Performance A few weeks ago we discussed the ITV Granada Killer Queen legendary lost appearance ("45" or "rock on 45'" with Kid Jensen), just to refresh here are some details and a pic of the stage with ABBA, with Queen's gear in the background, wall of vox ac30s and Roger's drumkit link edit: at the time when the database was searchable, I did cross-search for the Hello appearance, so its definitely 21th Nov and not the other 2 unknown dates (11 / 24 Oct ) The 3rd picture can either be 11th or 24th October, or one of the Now Im here performances. Sometimes there are people here who can tell which song is played by looking at the guitar chords etc... I have just watched the only TOTP show that survived from January 75 (2 Jan), and it features both stage design elements from the linked Queen pictures - so by comparing the stage setup to similar or close date performances doesnt help either, it can be October or January as well. |

I wasnt aware that 3 Seven Seas of Rhye "reared" its head. Does it matter if QP has it in there collection now? We wont see it anyway in my lifetime... someone wrote this on another forum, about the 3rd SSOR performance : "On one particular show which I have on cassette, Dave Lee Travis was interviewed giving his thoughts & recollections. I have just listened to DLT's interview again and during this he says, quote, "I have to say that Seven Seas Of Rhye by Queen, I must hold the record of being the only Disc Jockey in the world to have gone up on stage with Queen wearing a brown duster coat and carrying a broom and sweeping the stage while they were performing it and that was a great moment on Top of the Pops and I have got that on video somewhere and it was really quite funny" So GT, does QP have this in their archives now, or are you going to contact DLT, since he was claiming having a copy of the show? update: soemone told me the 'broom and duster' version is in the archives, but it came too late to feature it on GVH1. Yeah at least that was said during a Q&A session on QOL by GB. GT wrote: "This has caused a problem for a long time now. Thank you Miklos.....this is excellent information. |
strangefrontier 23.09.2010 16:20 |
Regarding the Seven Seas of Rhye 'DLT'' version, I can confirm that this does exist. DLT comes on the stage during Brian's solo brushing the floor and then points the broom at Brian before clashing it with the red special on the end echo section of the solo. He then leaves the stage with the brush over his shoulder leaving Brian grinning like a cheshire cat!! This is in the archive but was obtained too late to add to video hits 1. I presume that it will be used in the future on some project. |

Wait a moment - are we talking about THREE DIFFERENT versions of SSOR, or is one of them a repeat of some older version ? Also KQ - is it all the same video ? Because you write "rpt" only in some cases |
GT 27.09.2010 07:59 |
There are three seperate performances filmed on three seperate occasions for SSOR on TOTP and there are two seperate performances for KQ on TOTP. This has always been known, but apart from the KQ footage with FM in his fur coat, the other four performances have never seen the light of day on any official releases, and some only on bootleg recordings. |
pittrek 27.09.2010 08:26 |
Thanks for the info. I have always had only 2 performances of Seven Seas Of Rhye, both a hybrid black & white / color version, one without audience and the other WITH audience so that's quite new for me. |

The guys in this site really know their TOTP. Reading the surviving episode list here link confirms that the first surviving full episode with Queen is from Christmas 1974, Killer Queen, a repeat of the 11/Oct performance. Not too sure why the first performance of KQ in October is listed as a repeat, and to add to the confusion Queen are credited with a TOTP appearance on 21 September 1974 link which does not appear anywhere else. I'm guessing that's just an error seen as TOTP was on 20 September without a Queen performance. |

Someome mentioned guitar chords, the first 2 pics don't really show much but the bands body language and the fact that Brian is playing a very high note seems to match Killer Queen to me. The second performance seems to be clearly a B chord, Now I'm Here has a B chord but I don't beleive Killer Queen or Bo Rhap do. |

Great TopPop story; The tv station had tossed all of the original tapes of the show as they did not see any commercial value in them anymore. This was late 80s early 90s. A guy working there found these video boxes and film cans in a container outside and yes, he rescued them all from the trash and now has these stored in a VERY small room at the VARA-building. They are all different, some 16mm film, others VHS-tapes. and everything in between. The KQ performance is definatly recorded on video (not film). The tape shown on the rerun is bound to be the exact same tape they played in 1974. (not counting the transfer to digital as is done with every tv broadcast these days) So who has been keeping an eye on those dumpsters at BBC headquarters?! |

I don't have any more info on it, here are the original share notes. Queen - Killer Queen [TopPop].VOB Very HQ rare tv show promo. AVRO's "TopPop" was the first weekly pop program broadcast on Dutch television. It ran from September 22, 1970 to June 27, 1988. "TopPop" was mainly filled with pop artists in the top pop studio, playing to their latest hit. "Killer Queen" is a song by British rock band Queen. Written by pianist and lead singer Freddie Mercury, it featured on their 1974 album Sheer Heart Attack. Dane wrote: Great TopPop story; The tv station had tossed all of the original tapes of the show as they did not see any commercial value in them anymore. >>>>>>>>>>>>> I have some doubts about this story. At first the 1974 vara broadcast showed a different intro, the first images when themusic starts is from the prgramm host Ad Visser. At second the VARA did somewhere end of 90's a rebroadcast of the finest from the TOPPOP programm. And from this braodcasting is this taken. Te 74 versions shows ad visser in the beginning. As we all know from the bootleg vhs tape from the miracle express.... that on was made mid 90's and did not included the rebroadcast. Dane, could you reply to this please? |

I bet the KQ version we see here is qualitywise better than QP has in their vaults. Or not? Well they have it now I guess, so they don't have to buy it....... :-) |
