I wanted to make a torrent, but there is nice little question -
HOW THE HELL DO YOU CREATE A TORRENT ON QUEENZONE ???
The original thread is gone :-(
OK, now to the share
Band : Queen Studio : Maida Vale Studio 4, London, UK Date of recording : October 28, 1977 Date of broadcast : November 14, 1977 Producer : Jeff Griffin Sound engineer : Mike Robinson Band Freddie Mercury - vocals, piano Brian May - guitar, backing vocals John Deacon - bass guitar Roger Taylor - drums, backing vocals Tracklist Spread Your Wings It's Late (with parts of Get Down Make Love) My Melancholy Blues We Will Rock You (slow / fast) Lineage PRO > Analogue 1/4 reel MASTER > MiniDisc > WAV > CD(1) > EAC > WAV > Trader's Little Helper > FLAC level 8 Sound quality : Excellent + "Performance quality" : Excellent +++ :-) Length : 19:30 --- Mini-reviewAfter a break of some three years, Queen returned to Maida to record their final session for the BBC. This time four tracks from the recently released News Of The World LP were reworked. The album received it's UK release on this day on October 28th 1977, the BBC airing provided additional publicity. The session was produced by Jeff Griffin and engineered by Mike Robinson, and was broadcast two weeks later, on November 14th. The recordings provide an enthralling listening experience: John Deacon's "Spread Your Wings" is bursting with energy with Freddie obviously revelling in singing this expansive song. This recording is very similar to the Live Killers version of two years later. An unusual aspect of Session 6 is the inclusion of a narrative passage, which precedes "We Will Rock You". Immediately after an explosion, and just prior to the opening chords, a female voice cuts in briefly with an extract of a reading from Siddartha, by Herman Hesse. How did this come about? At that time, only master tapes survived from BBC sessions, while the actual tapes used to compose them were recorded over later. When Queen assembled in the control room for a playback, they discovered remnants of a Radio 4 programme on their tape. The band incorporated a segment of this unusual material into their own work. The broadcast version began in News Of The World fashion, then breaks for the Siddartha interlude. "It's Late" contains a unique improvised section absent from the album version. There are many similarities with "Get Down, Make Love" (from the same album), which is largely due to a custom-made tape delay machine, which the band took with them into the studio. Since no commercially available device existed to supply the desired length of delay, the band had to come up with their own. "My Melancholy Blues", from this session, is just stunning. Brian accompanies Freddie on guitar, which does not occur on the LP cut, and the result is superior to the album mix, and that's saying something--- Quote from link VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO JOHN S. STUART !!! Basic rules 1. NEVER try to "remaster" the recording and share it, KEEP THE AUDIO UNTOUCHED ! 2. NEVER ENCODE TO MP3 OR OTHER LOSSY FORMATS !!! I will search common mp3 sites to check if it appears in mp3 format somewhere ! 3. DO NOT SELL !!! - I know the common bootleg pages and I will check regularly if somebody will sell it ! Especially eBay ! 4. DO NOT BOOTLEG !!! - I will regularly check the various "bootleg encyclopaedias" and pray that this won't appear somewhere ! This is a very special gift from a famous Queen collector, so if you want to see more from his collection, don't you dare to NOT to obey the above mentioned rules ! If ANY of the rules will be broken by some idiot, I will NEVER share something again, I swear ! Other BBC sessions will (maybe) follow later, it depends on your reactions and the reactions of a "certain company" :-) Enjoy and please, accept the 4 rules ! Download link: link |

brians wig 30.05.2010 04:49 |
Folks. You'll notice that a few frames from the start of "My Melancholy Blues" appears on the end of "It's Late" due to a mis- timed edit, so you may want to amend this yourselves before you burn to CD. |

Many thanks John and Pittrek for coming up with these recordings. I remember recording them on my stereo when they were first broadcast on the John Peel show on BBC Radio 1.I'd just got back from College/nightschool just in time to get my cassette tape in. I was also very fortunate that i was able to receive a crystal clear stereo reception where i lived. Excuse me for my ramblings |

Thank you John (and Pittrek) for sharing this. Just listened to it and it completely blew me away. Such a great quality, you can feel the energy of the band as if you're there with them in the studio, or better, Freddie, Brian, Roger and John were actually in MY ROOM. The crystal clear sound of this recording is amazing as if it's played live at this very moment. Let's treasure this, folks. |

It takes me back some 30 years (or so) when I played some hashed up version on an LP with fake audience and clapping, but nonetheless blitzed by the energy of it all. Does anyone else just love the way Roger belts out the top harmonies on We will rock you? Should time and your continued generosity permit, I look forward to any other jewels that you may care to offer. Hangman anyone? Again, hugely grateful |

At least the positive aspect of these not being direct from the master is that QPL can't complain that the best quality copies of these sesisons have been shared for free on the internet. Let's face it. We are ALL going to go and buy the official release (aren't we folks...) IF it happens, so apart from the odd person who would download the official release for free anyway, it's not as is QPL are going to lose out on any revenue because we have got these. If nothing else, it has just whet our appetite even more for the official product! |

A strange thing: 'We Will Rock You' - the fast section, as officially released on that Sun promo CD, sounds a bit 'Alvin and the Chipmunks'. I checked it and it plays in F sharp major. One would more usually expect it in E major. So I slowed it down about 10 per cent to round about E major and it sounded too slow. So, I tried a really wacky one - F major, in between the two but a very odd key to play the song is (Brian tends to write in 'guitarist's keys' such as A, D and E)... and that fits. Even the drums sound exactly the same as the drums on the rest of the sessions, but the real give away is the voices. So, my guess is they recorded in F (for reasons best known to themselves) then sped it up a semi-tone to make it more 'peppy'. Brian says they sometimes did this - he cited the studio version of 'Another One Bites the Dust' as an example... so, if you want to hear it in the key Queen actually played it in, slow it down about 5 per cent. Oh, and thank you Pittrek. Thank you so much. |

Is the version of We Will Rock You produced by Jeff Griffin available anywhere? I have a copy on an old tape that was broadcast on the last Alan Freeman Rock Show on 26th August 1978, but frustratingly it spanned the end of the tape so it got chopped in two. I have always thought that the narrative was spoken by Lesley Judd who was a Blue Peter presenter, it sounds like her. Alan |

Would very much like to discuss trading for these files with someone - RapidShare is no more, and it seems that those days are gone now (sorry - could not resist). As far as the frequency response points go, it would be normal to see roll-off at around 18-20kHz. In the days when these session files were recorded the analogue consoles used rarely - if ever - were capable of anything over 20Hz to 20kHz resolution. The consoles used at Trident (the A-Range) and the Neves were both capped out at 20kHz maximum, and an awful lot of microphones likewise cannot actually capture anything above 20kHz either - if that high. I've attached the Trident Console user manual, and assure you all the Neve's are the same. It's a shame they went to miniDisc, which uses ATRAC data reduction, and it is lossy - so even though it is true 24-bit, the actual compression algo used is a lossy, perceptual one. |

Great post. Please post more ! We need more quality dialogue like this. My question is - if the original source couldn't have exceeded 20kHz, then does going to miniDisc really make it that much worse, if at all? Suppose a direct 16/44 transfer to digital from the master was possible. Wouldn't that make it a mere storage medium, like burning a DVD onto a blu-ray disc ? |

They allow torrents with no lineage, yet they pull torrents that DO have a lineage, regardless of whether the 'lossy' source IS the actual Master or not! Maybe things have changed in the last few years, but the arseholes there once pulled every single one of my torrents and banned me because I'd been honest and said in the lineage that minidisc was the MASTER source! As a result of that, I've a number of recordings of other bands from the early 2000's that haven't seen the light of day and will probably remain as such. Either way, there was no need to tell me to "check my facts before posting": that's what causes people to respond with abuse, especially in this community, but I fully appreciate the fact that you are not English and therefore slightly misunderstood what I had written. |
MDNA 07.06.2012 16:54 |
I may not be a native english speaker, but I do have a good understanding of it. When someone writes "The idiots at Dime consider minidisc to be a lossy format" it implies that the authour does not consider minidisc to be lossy, hence my remark. Like I said, check Dime's rules. Minidisc masters are allowed. I uploaded one myself and it is still running. This is their section of the Wiki dedicated to minidisc: ATRAC encoding on MiniDiscs is lossy, though generally considered to be less damaging than MP3 encoding. However, it is not possible to write actual ATRAC data as files that can be shared via BitTorrent, so MiniDisc tracks must be dubbed to PCM for torrenting (and then, per DIME policy, compressed without further loss and divided, unless inapplicable, into tracks). DIME will permit such material, provided that it meets all other applicable requirements, when the torrent's lineage information provided by the uploader documents that ... The original capture from a microphone at the performance was direct to an MD recorder, in either MDSP or MDLP (any better source would have to be from a different capture and therefore the ATRACked version could run as an alternative), or An analog source for audio (for example, an FM or TV signal, or an audiocassette, a videotape's audio, or a vinyl platter) was digitized by being dubbed to MD in MDSP — MDLP is unacceptable for this — and no source that is less lossy is available on DIME; but An encoding into ATRAC that is preceded anywhere in the lineage by a digitally stored generation disqualifies the material from being shared via DIME. The foregoing provision applies only to ATRAC encodings. PCM recordings captured in Hi-MD mode on Hi-MD equipment are lossless and should be shared in a lossless compression format and, unless inapplicable, divided into tracks. Lossy audio material that lacks the required lineage information will not qualify for this variance, and will be treated like any other lossy audio. |

I am told by someone that decodes quadraphonic stuff as a hobby that some or all of this session was broadcast quadraphonic in Matrix H encoding on the Alan Freeman show. Matrix H is hard to decode but he is working on techniques for it. However we don't know if the Matrix H encoded master is the same as the standard one or whether a seperate mix and encode was done for the Alan Freeman show. And even if it is this master, the ATRAC MiniDisc stage may have ruined the Matrix H quad encoding since lossy codecs often throw away phase differences which we can't hear and is how the quad is encoded. Ideally the decode should be done from a lossless transfer of the relevant master. So can anyone help with: a) is this the Matrix H quad master, and if so can we get a copy that hasn't been through MiniDisc to decode? b) if this isn't the Matrix H quad master from the Alan Freeman show, does anyone know of any recordings (master or off air cassette) of that show? If we could get this decoded it would be the only certain Queen in quadraphonic. (Rumours persist about Golder's Green Hippodrome aka Pop Spectular being in quad, but the BBC transcription disc label is quite clear in not showing any quad markings. Also my quad contact has decoded Pop Spectacular through an SQ decoder and says it isn't in quad, just quite normal out of phase stuff present which happens quite often.) |

Hmm, looks like no-one knows anything about this. Not even an off air recording of these tracks from the Alan Freeman show? That would at least have the Matrix H encoding for sure. |

To decode Matrix H, you phase shift the right channel by +60 degrees and then run it through a QS decoder. Leaving the right channel unchanged did however produce much better results. In the rear channels, there's almost no lead vocal, but the echoed effects during the middle part of It's Late are very clear. I tried this script: link but it seems to be too agressive. Perhaps there's a better one somewhere? Here's the decoded rear channels of It's Late: link Edit: Balancing the source better would probably produce better results. I'm not familiar with the compression algorithm of minidiscs, but at least mp3 stores certain frequencies mixed down to mono, which in turn cancels out the sound mixed directly behind the listener. |

The 2011 remasters bonus tracks still has this quadraphonic encoding. I did the maths myself and decoded them manually. The results are incredible so far! Would the decoded tracks be considered official, and thereby not allowed to shared here? |

It is quite common to get a nice effect running stereo sources through a quad decoder due to natural phase changes in the recording. But then you are listening to something in a way that was not intended when it was recorded. Your choice, but not true quadraphonic. |

I did a bit of reading in to it, more precisely http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/reports/1974-29.pdf and http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/reports/1977-02.pdf, and the "60 degree hack" is clearly documented in the latter report (page 5 and onwards). It is stated to produce slightly better results (closer to original quadraphonic mix) than a simple "proper" linear Matrix H decode. According to my analysis, neither this share or the 2011 remasters (which should be the same mix) contain any indication of Matrix H encoded material. A pure QS 'logical' decode did produce some interesting results, which could be entirely coincidental as you said, but shouldn't SQ and Matrix H decoding also produce some interesting sounds in that case? |

Even in the most happy situation (also the most unlikely one) - when the material is quad encoded and you find the correct decoding matrix - don't expect to a breathtaking surround experience. The only benefit will be a properly restored stereo image. But if the original material has no obvious stereo compatibility issues, like in this case, there is nothing to restore. |

Yes it might have given the best results in 1977 with hardware decoders but things have moved on. My friend decodes things in software, where modern techniques can do much better phase shifts and channel seperation etc. than 1970s analogue hardware could ever achieve. Good that you agree this is not Matrix H encoded. As I understand it the Matrix H broadcast was a separate remix done by Tony Wilson exlcusively for the Alan Freeman show. We're looking for different master tapes or an off air recording. Whether they still exist anywhere is doubtful. Why does QS give a nice effect when SQ or Matrix H don't? Just chance based on what is in the original recording I suspect, depending on what is out of phase with what else. |

So I suppose that the announcer is lying about the concert being "broadcast in stereo and compatible SQ quad"? Or you claim that this is a fake announcement? I think it's very clear that the concert was broadcast in SQ encoded quadraphonic sound - at least in the 1975/09/13 broadcast. I believe it's unreasonable to claim that 'natural phase shifts' cause the guitar to be panned as accordingly as it is. Phase differences due to mic placement on a guitar amplifier can't phase shift the entire frequency spectrum equally (except for 180 degrees, which is not the case here). |
OwenSmith 16.08.2014 19:56 |
The question now becomes how do we get hold of a recording that is from the 1975/09/13 broadcast and no other source. The best source is the transcription disc but that is not labelled as SQ and doesn't decode. |
