It will be interesting to see what Queen fans think about the Game. Synths were used for the first time and there were more pop-rock songs than the trademark heavy rock from the 1970s. However some Queen fans think Hot Space was better than the Game???? Who Would you rate the album, is it one of Queen's best or a downfall and what were the highlights and dull moments of the album? |

I was about to turn 15 when that album came out. It just EXPLODED during that summer. No matter where you went you saw Queen posters and displays for the album. It was EVERYWHERE on the radio. 6 months prior to the release we had Crazy Little Thing and then Play the Game came out a few months later. But when the album hit... it hit huge!!! That summer for me was kind of what the summer of 1967 was for that generation when Sgt. Pepper came out. I saw the band in Providence in August and "Dust" was about to be released which sent the album even higher. But then they took a wrong turn on the highway of life and ate it when they released Hot Space. As young Queen fans back then you have to understand that we were used to hearing some heavy music from the band with all the ditties thrown in and we appreciated that cleverness about the band. Hot Space kind of took us by surprise though. Well ahead of it's time. I'll admit I was one of those fans that put them on the back burner for a little while but I never dismissed them ever! The Game will be 30 years old this June. I hail it as a triumphant record for the band because it got them to dominate the US for that summer. And each time I hear any track off that LP I get to relive my youth all over again! |

The first side was flawless. A perfect combination of music. The second side is a little dissapointing. Prime jime is pretty cool, though I'm not a big fan of new wave. not a big fan of coming soon and Don't try suicide. The latter being the better of the two IMO. Sail away and save me are the tunes that save the second side. Overall, It's not on the level of the earlier albums like A night at the opera or a day at the races, but it was a solid record. Better than anything that came after it until Innuendo was released. |

"The Game" is a mixed bag for me. Up to then most albums sounded a bit like concept albums with some intro at the beginning and some outro, even "Jazz" had this medley at the end. There seemed to be some connection between the songs From "The Game" onwards the albums were more like song collections of the four different writers. Still many good seperate songs, but no longer working as "albums" for me. |
SidedBeef 24.04.2010 14:41 |
The first half of the album is amazing. The second half of the album is pretty "meh", excluding Save Me. Dragon Attack is my favorite off the album, but it is overshadowed by AOBTD and CLTCL. |

I consider "The Game" as the transition lp between the '70s style and the '80s style. "The Game" ranks high on my favorite Queen lps list. "Play the Game" - Like it. "Dragon Attack" - Like it. "Another One Bites the Dust" - One of those songs that one likes, but is really sick of. I wish that this song hadn't been a hit. That way, perhaps, Queen would have not continued in this funk/dance phase and the lp called "Hot Space" wouldn't have turned out to be the crappy lp it turned out to be. "Need Your Loving Tonight" - Like it. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" - One of those songs that one likes, but is really sick of. I like this much better than AOBTD. "Rock It (Prime Jive)" - Like it. "Don't Try Suicide" - At the time of its release I wasn't crazy about it. Now, I don't like it at all. "Sail Away Sweet Sister" - Like it. "Coming Soon" - Like it. "Save Me" - Like it. |

In my opinion The Game is surely the last of the 'classic' Queen albums. While I love to think and talk about it as if it were crap, when I hear the album I am just sold. This, however, does not include some tracks. In a way it is more solid than Jazz, and a lot more Queen than Hot Space, but it's also a bit of a half-baked steak. While some songs are truly masterpieces, others are soo boring, making this an album of different extremes. I like the album, but I will never love it. Track-by-track: 1. Play the Game - great track. 2. Dragon Attack - meh... it's ok I guess. 3. Dust - agree with skip: one likes it, but is sick of it. 4. Need Your Loving Tonight - Likeable sweet little tune. 5. Crazy Little Thing Called Love - agree with skip: one likes it, but is sick of it. 6. Rock It (Prime Jive) - Cool intro, fun Taylor song, but the end is repetitive. 7. Don't Try Suicide - Worst song Queen ever recorded. 8. Sail Away Sweet Sister - Great Brian song. 9. Coming Soon - Mediocre track, yet I always enjoy it. 10. Save Me - great track. |

I love The Game. I regard it as a masterpiece, every bit as good as the 70's albums, and arguably one of Queen's five or six best albums. I think it's an incredible album, and it marked the end of their classic period. To me, The Game is an album of two halves. The first side is flawless, arguably one of Queen's very best album sides, however the second side is quite ordinary apart from two songs. 1)Play the Game - absolutely gorgeous. One of Queen's very best ballads, it was a wonderful way to open the album, and showed that after Mustapha, Queen hadn't lost the ability to pick the perfect album opener. 2)Dragon Attack - John is wonderful, and so is the song. Not as well known as other songs on the album, I think it deserves to be much better known as IMO it's one hell of a rock song. 3)AOBTD- a masterpiece. Quite simply one of Queen's absolute greatest songs. 4)Need Your Loving Tonight- the measure of an album (or in this case, an album side) is how good is its weakest song. NYLT is arguably the weakest song on the first side of The Game, yet it's still really good. It's no masterpiece, but I find it highly enjoyable. 5)Crazy Little Thing Called Love- a masterpiece. A brilliant, brilliant song, which is enhanced further when one considers that it took Freddie something only like ten minutes to write it! :D 6)Rock It (Prime Jive)- disappointing. Whilst it's not a bad song (very few Queen songs are genuinely bad), it is extremely ordinary and was a massive letdown after the first five songs which varied between really good and masterpiece. 7)Don't Try Suicide- very ordinary. Freddie is great, the instrumentation is terrific, but the lyrics.... They are so annoyingly horrible. If they were about anything else, I think that the song could have been terrific, but that's obvously not the case and as such I think it's a massive disappointment. Especially considering that Freddie wrote it. While he wasn't perfect, he was almost always much better than this, although at least his other two songs on this album were brilliant. 8)Sail Away Sweet Sister- a classic. One of my favourite Brian-sung songs, part of me wishes that it was better known, however another part of me likes that it's so obscure, as I like the idea of there being gems which only Queen fans know about. This is certainly one of them. 9)Coming Soon- boring, boring, boring. Roger was incredibly disappointing on this album. Freddie, Brian and John all contributed multiple terrific songs to this album, however neither of Roger's songs were particularly good. 10)Save Me- a masterpiece. One of Queen's absolute best album closers, it (along with Sail Away) saved the second side for me. A truly beautiful song, it ended arguably one of the greatest albums of all time. |
GinjaNinja 26.04.2010 15:55 |
I love ALL the songs! Don't Try Suicide sounded rubbish at first, but then it's really grown on me. Very satisfying song to play! Save Me is one of my all time faves, and so is SASS and NYLT. Love it. |
mike hunt 26.04.2010 20:18 |
Roger's 2 songs bring down the album! .....What else is new. Don't we go through on almost every album?.....Either it's loser in the end, more of that jazz, fun it, prime jive, coming soon. Even drowse was the worst song on a day at the races. |
Holly2003 27.04.2010 11:51 |
I love Drowse and Rock It (Prime Jive). It's Roger's eccentricty that often makes his songs so enjoyable. Add to that list Modern Times Rock and Roll, Tenement Funster, I'm In Love WIth My Car and Sheer Heart Attack from the early albums and it doesn't look like too bad at all. Not only that, I'd say Fred was responsible for the worst song on the debut album (Jesus) and also on Queen II (Funny How Love Is) and Deaky's responsbile for the worst one on Sheer Heart Attack (Misfire). All a matter of taste, of course. |

To be honest, I like Roger's songs on The Game. The intro in Rock it (Prime jive) is ace and the lyrics in this part describe my feelings towards the song. It does get a bit repetitive but there is always something slightly different happening in the background: additional voices join in, Roger's vocals sing a bit differently, there's a synth melody in the background near the end. Love every second of this song. Coming soon might be a bit repetitive and ordinary but I enjoy it a lot. It doesn't really sound like Queen at all, though. Other Roger songs that are among my favorite Queen songs are I'm in love with my card, Drowse and Tenement Funster. The rest range from half decent to mediocre, in my book. |

Yeh, I probably exaggerated when I described it as one of the greatest albums of all time. I do consider it to be a masterpiece and I do regard it as an all-time great, but would I include it on a list of the 500 or 1000 greatest albums of all time? No, I don't think I would. |

Modern times rock n roll, tenament funster, I'm in love with my car and sheer heart attack being my favorites. Prime Jive is ok I guess. I Like the intro with fred on vocals. The rest is not so great. Roger was hit or miss unless you're a total stepford of the guy who thinks fun it and loser in the end is brilliant. I know the roger stepfords are fuming at my post. lol. |

I wouldn't change a thing about the black side, while I do agree funny how love is the weakest of the side, it fits perfectly with the rest of the songs. most of the black side sounds at it's best when played together. The only side that stands up to the mighty black side is side B of A night at the opera. Prophet song, love of my life, good company, Bo Rhap, Doesn't get much better than that. As far as Misfire goes....Love the song, it's a short sweet little tune. Love the vocals. |

You're both nuts. Sail Away Sweet Sister is amazing. Great bass, one of Brian's best vocals, a startling little vocal interlude by Fred, excellent riffs, and a trademark Red Special layered solo. Except for maybe All Dead, All Dead or It's Late, this is Brian's best work. So there. |

Holly, you need to read what we said more carefully. :D Michael wrote, and with which I agreed, 'Side 2: Except for Save Me and Sail Away - Filler.' I LOVE Sail Away. I think it is a wonderful song (read my post on on the first page of this thread). You don't need to convince me how good it is. Michael and I were simply saying that apart from Sail Away and Save Me, side 2 was all filler. So you're preaching to the choir. :D :D :D That said, I think it's alot better than It's Late, which I've always felt was a bit overrated and is IMO quite boring. How Sail Away stacks up against other Brian songs is unclear for me as I'm not sure that it's among his absolute best works as a song-writer, but I do think it is among the very best Brian-sung songs. His two best songs as a song-writer were probably IMO The Prophet's Song and We Will Rock You. Anyway, Sail Away is a wonderful song off an album on which Brian was flawless. |

I do believe that the Game is the last of the classic Queen period. Play the Game - 10/10 - Fantastic song, love it Dragon Attack - 10/10 - Yes, I gave it a 10/10. Love the bass Another One Bites the Dust - 10/10 - As a Funk Song, you don't get much better than that. Need Your Loving Tonight - 9.5/10 - I love this track, good rocker Crazy Little Thing Called Love - 10/10 - An outstanding attempt of rockabilly Rock It - 9/10 - An underrated track Don't Try Suicide - 8/10 - It's quite good. Sail Away Sweet Sister - 10/10 - I love this song. The last of the 1970s Queen sound. John shines with his bass. Coming Soon - 8.5/10 - It's fun, coming soon. It's also catchy. Save Me - 10/10 - Best track from the album. |

Play the Game — 7/10 (very overrated song) Dragon Attack — 9/10 (great hard rock and funk fusion) Another One Bites the Dust — 8/10 (another one overrated song) Need Your Loving Tonight — 9/10 (very joyful and fun track) Crazy Little Thing Called Love — 7/10 (overrated) Rock It (Prime Jive) — 10/10 (truely energic and powerful rock'n'roll) Don't Try Suicide — 4/10 (really boring and uninspired song) Sail Away Sweet Sister — 8/10 (another one good Brian's power ballad) Coming Soon — 10/10 (great song, my favourite from this album, alongside with Rock It) Save Me — 10/10 (another one good Brian's power ballad) A Human Body — 8/10 (not best Roger's song) Dragon Attack (1991 Bonus Remix by Jack Benson and R.A.K) — 6/10 (bad remix) Another One Bites the Dust (Ogilvie Remix) — 8/10 (really good electro/industrial remix, although I hate electronic music, even industrial) Another One Bites the Dust (Long Dusted B-boy Version) — 7/10 (funny) |

As mentioned in the Jazz topic, I take it upon my interests every now and then to blast through all of Queen's stuff. Incidently, today I finished The Game and Hot Space, so I will write about my feelings in regards to both of those albums (and perhaps a couple more of the older ones, while they're fresh in my memory!). So with The Game, we were introduced to the controversial synthesiser. Some loved it, some hated it. To me, there are some aspects of The Game that sounds like people were using it for the first time, like how you give a child a keyboard and they take great interest in using all the sample tracks and sounds and making a massive globular mess. Case in point, Play The Game, which itself is a great opener to an album, but it doesn't half feel like you're listening to a cheesy sci-fi film of the times (Flash Gordon, anybody?!) when the synth is used. Regardless, the vocals are fantastic and saves the song. I prefer the live version from Montreal that is played in the classic Queen style, but it's a good opener. Freddie would write two more songs, and they couldn't have been any more different if you tried. Firstly you had Crazy Little Thing Called Love, which is a personal favourite of mine. Short, simple, a great homage to Elvis, it's proof that Queen could dip into any music genre and make it work. Such a simple song ang yet worked so well. His other song is Don't Try Suicide, which is somewhat controversial for both the song and the lyrical content. In a weird way it's a cross between Crazy Little Thing and some of what you would here from Hot Space, but I think it works quite well. The lyrics, while controversial are simply Freddie in his finest, suggesting that you should live life and not waste it. John and Roger's contributions to the album were very successful. We all know about Another One Bites The Dust, but there''s also Need Your Loving Tonight, reminiscent of his earlier stuff from ADATR and NOTW. This was John back to great form after the dip in Jazz, as was Roger. Rock It is a fantastic, almost nostalgic (I'm talking from Queen Discography point of view, as I was only born in 1989!) feeling, and Coming Soon definitely does not hinder the album. As for Brian, he was certainly unafraid to attempt new things. Dragon Attack was a sound that is somewhat unusual coming from him, but would help pave the way for Queen's sound in the following album, one that is controversial but will be spoken about later. Musically a solid track, with a cool beat that gets your fingers clicking. Sail Away Sweet Sister - somewhat inaccurate cos if he really had a sister I doubt this song would ever have been written - refers back to his sweet, often poignant styles that we've seen in Some Day One Day and All Dead, All Dead. Finally, we have Save Me, a song that I find is grossly underrated. I love it, I feel it's one of the must beautiful songs Queen have ever done, and a fine way to close the album. To sum up, there are a few anomalies in this album, but Queen's first attempt at changing their sound is certainly a welcome one coming off Jazz, and a vast improvement. The 70s were done and gone and brilliant to look back on, but with The Game, Queen were showing that they were happy to drive forward in this gear. They had developed new sounds, new styles, and provided a rather refreshing turn to their career. 9/10 |

This was a bit of a comeback for Queen. Crazy Little Thing was released before the album and when I first heard it, I couldn't beleive it was Queen, itwas so different. 1 Play The Game - Classic Queen at its best 2 Dragon Attack - a precursor to that garbage that was Hot Space. American rockers didn't want to hear Michael Jackson sh#t 3 AOBtD - same as Dragon Attack but for some obtuse reason became a big hit among non-Queen fans in America 4 Need Your Loving Tonight - This is one of Johns best songs. It is nothing more than a well crafted pop song. 5 Crazy Little Thing Called Love - This was another change of direction for Queen with a rockabilly feel to it. I understand why Queen played an encore of Ameircan 50's rockers of this nature. It probably wen't over big in Europe. But in America this stuff was old and tired. When I saw the band on the Game tour and they opened with Jailhouse Rock, it was a big letdown. 6 Rock It - This song had a great intro but slid into mediocrity. 7 Don't Try Suicide. - I never understood why they wrote that song. 8 Sail Away Sweet Sister - This is a beutiful song. I love how they blended Brian and Freddie's voices - one of the best on the album 9 Coming Soon - Why did they write a song about premature ejaculation? 10 Save Me - Great way to end the album. Great song live too. |

Queen's first 5 albums were classics. SHA is probably the weakest of the 5. They went down hill with NOTW. Jazz suffered from poor production and poor songwriting. Live Killers is one of my favorite. The Game was a bit of a come back with a few good songs. Flash Gordon doesn't really count. Hot Space is garbage. They had another minor come back with The Works, but by then America was done with them. AKOM was very uneven with a couple of good tracks. The Miracle is solid. Innuendo was well crafted but understandably a bit of a downer. Made in Heaven was too much of a mish mash to be considered a real album. |

That's my take on Queen's career, and I'm sure plenty of Queenzoner's will disagree with some of my comments. |

Play the Game - Like. 9/10 Dragon Attack - It's fine, but not really Queen. 7/10 Another One Bites the Dust - Not Queen, but still good. Wish it hadn't been so popular though - hearing it a lot on radio and tv gets tiring. 8/10 Need Your Loving Tonight - I'd almost describe this song as cute. It's a bit standard, but there's hardly anything wrong with it. 8,5/10 Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen's most overrated song. 6/10 Rock It - Roger, I love you. 9/10 Don't Try Suicide - Don't really like it, but I wouldn't call it a filler. 7/10 Sail Away Sweet Sister - 10/10. That's all I can say. Coming Soon - Great to hear Rog and Fred singing together. 8/10 Save Me - Epic. 10/10 A Human Body - My least favourite Roger song. 6/10 |
