Visited Brianmay.com recently? Check out the latest letter, a reply from Brian to a Councillor David Parsons I can understand his heartfelt feelings for the creatures he's trying to protect. Brian is a man whose views, although I don't always agree, are usually expressed articulately and from a sounds knowledge base, but with this reply (and promulgating it though his webpage) leaves a doubt in my mind I had always assumed that the more bombastic and self-aggrandizing attitudes expressed in Queen songs were written with tongues firmly in cheeks! On reading how he addresses this man: 'little man', 'snivelling jumped-up litlle dweeb' gives me the impression that all is not what it should be in BrianMay world or perhaps, at last, the real character of the man is exposed Certainly makes me think twice....and I'm not sure I like second thoughts |

We've got two offensive messages from Brian (this and one ca three years ago which I remember addressing) against literally thousands of diplomatic ones. So, statistically, his 'colours' are still those of a polite and nice person. Likewise, just because there are people in England who speak Korean, it doesn't mean the true official language of the country is that one. |

This asshole of a councillor did judge Brian presumeably by what he read in the papers. He sided with the farmers and pro-hunt idiots because it was a "popular" thing to do. Personally I am glad that Brian posted a pic of the councillor guy on his website, because now I know what a human halloween cake looks like. :) |

Yes, the fact that Brian has chaffed his hands from years of guitar abuse is something we should really get behind. Poor, poor Brian May. |

Micrówave wrote: "Yes, the fact that Brian has chaffed his hands from years of guitar abuse is something we should really get behind. Poor, poor Brian May." Brian may not have actually chaffed his hands, but he has worked extremely hard to get to where he is. Plus, I don't think that being a wealthy rock star automatically precludes him from speaking on an issue such as this. One can question the way he has gone about it (and I did in the other thread), but I don't think anyone can question his right to speak up on social/political issues. |

Brian has heard for decades that rock stars are unintelligent people. One day he was bound to crack. Still, there's about 1,000,000,000,000 diplomatic comments from Brian versus 2 or 3 anger-fueled ones. I think we should cut the guy some slack. Most people in this world can't relate to living a life of passion, making it easy for them to condemn someone when their passion goes overboard for a brief moment. It's far easier than trying to understand the passion itself and how it can lead to such a breaking point. |
danwhite89 21.04.2010 10:41 |
He's just an angry old man with a blog nowadays. His music is great but his soapbox is kinda embarrassing to read at times. Just imagine all those times when you were forced to listen to your grandad's stories that you'd heard 50 times previously and just wanted to get away - that's what Brian's soapbox is nowadays! |
The Real Wizard 21.04.2010 10:50 |
Nobody forced you to read it. If he's not allowed to express himself, what in your wisdom do you think he should be doing? Accept the world at face value and live a pointless life of inaction? |

The last time I checked, Brian is a law-abiding citizen, and therefore has the right to be active in any social/political issue he wants to. It's bad enough, when I'm called a traitor and a communist, just because I'm politically moderate/liberal, agnostic, and don't worship at the Neo-Con Altar. |
David Jones 21.04.2010 13:16 |
Everybody's got a temper. Did Anita say on one documentary that it takes a lot to wind Brian upand he rarely explodes but when he does its a big one? I guess that's what we've seen here. |

Yeah - probably a blip I can understand how it's possible to 'snap' when provoked - I do think he could have chosen his words more carefully and perhaps made a bigger impact with diplomatic language rather than a tirade of abuse I'm just not sure I like his superior tone.... |

Did you even read Brian's letter? He brought up the chaffed hands!!!! You go on fighting for Nazi Germany though. Hopefully Brad Pitt and the Basterds pay you a visit. I believe you still hold the title of Queenzone Useless Prick, but I'm trying. Afraid of a little competition, eh? On topic: I'm fully behind Brian on this one. Anyone who argues for artists to shut up about political/social issues belongs in North Korea or Nazi-Germany So you like Barbara Streisand and Cher, with a little Bono thrown on top!!! Do you buy albums based on their political/social issues? I would rather they just shut up and sing. I didn't buy the concert ticket to listen to them rant. And I don't think that makes me a North Korean Nazi. If you're insufficiently intelligent to even READ BRIAN'S LETTER, I suggest you try. But please go on commenting like you normally do. Ignorance is bliss, and you've got enough for us all to share. |

That politician has no idea of how tough you have to be as a rock star. Sure, that countryside-living politician may have strained his back cleaning out a horse stall, or cut himself while trimming tall hedges, but has he ever fallen into a piano pit, landing on his back, while protecting a priceless guitar, then gone on to play a two hour show in front of thousands of screaming girls without letting onto the terrible pain? No. I didn't think so. |
Voice of Reason 2018 27.04.2010 11:15 |
'Shut up and sing' Microwave?!! That'd be a good one! |
Holly2003 27.04.2010 12:00 |
I remember reading an interview with Brian in Guitar Player magazine in the 1980s . He talked about gardening and how he used the "Wellington Boot method" to dispose of snails in his garden (presumably that means stamping on them?). How does that sit with animal rights? Is it only cuddly animals that Brian wants us to save, or the slimy ones too? Incidentally, it's nice that the Save Me campaign was launched using some of those billboards Brian hates. I'm really confused now: should I hate billboards or like them? I'm off to lie down for a bit, do some pondering... |
TheAmazingEvent 28.04.2010 05:04 |
Have you not noticed that the pop stars who need to shut up tend to be the ones who are either obviously quite dim or completey detatched from reality? Dr May is neither - yes he is rich but remains grounded enough in the real world to see cruelty for what it is and researchs the subject so doesn't just restate some PR bollox for the cameras like many airheads do. We need a voice! The polititians are all too busy counting the expenses money/oil money/outside interests money/under the table money/buying 3rd homes with our money |
Micrówave 28.04.2010 05:58 |
What's a well-known, aged rock star going to do about that? Besides release a couple more greatest hits CDs, a few books, and over-priced box sets and cash in. |
The Real Wizard 28.04.2010 11:06 |
Indeed. Everyone, included rock stars, shouldn't voice their opinions on anything. What good is being informed? |
Benn Kempster 28.04.2010 12:52 |
Brian just seemingly can't help himself, can he? Remember his "hate" for shows such as the X-Factor and the C-lebrity single.......only then to jump right on the bandwagon and agree to "mentor" contestants and allow Queen songs ot be used? Sadly, he's a laughable character these days.......people really should be licensed to be able to use computers; Brian would be a prime candidate as someone that should take the "due dilligence" test and not be allowed anywhere near one other than specifically for the purpose of performing his job - producing music. |

Research and reality? What I mostly see is spin (on both sides) and emotion. And that is never good grounds for public policy. Supporters may be 150% correct, but there is virtually no evidence of it yet. If there is an actual argument on the campaign site, which is a festival of genuine passion, extreme egocentrism and outright crackpottery, I think I've missed it. It's 90% babbling rhetoric (with pictures!) and 10% other. I believe Brian's passion and conviction absoutely, and admire and respect his (somewhat ham fisted) willingness to use his celebrity for something meaningful. But in the end he's a fundamentalist on this issue who seems to lack broad empathy. I think he's building a small tent, which is truly a shame. I'd be thrilled to be wrong. I'd be thrilled if I felt there was a place for me, just to repay a fraction of what Queen has been to me. But I'm not optimistic. |
Micrówave 30.04.2010 02:49 |
Indeed. Everyone, included rock stars, shouldn't voice their opinions on anything. What good is being informed?Well, perhaps the source material is in question. The fact that the fundamentalist in question spends half his time in outer space lately, makes me think he might not be too grounded. Remember when Streisand made her "comeback" performance? Televised everywhere, they practically shoved it down your throat. Took, what, two songs for her to bitch about her abusive parents? So to quote many Queenzoners, my message to Brian (and Streisand for that matter) is "Wrong Forum". |
