Okay okay.... So I'm a little late to the party. Oh well. The chips are still addicting and the beers still cold. At least mine is. Who knew this was so fun? Why Queen? I mean, I'd never do this to like, the Beatles or the Stones or the Pistols or.... Sham 69 or..... Well, whatever. I'm having fun.
Here's a better song and a better remix than the first one I posted. At least I think so. Hope you do too. If you bother to listen to it that is.
It sounds to me like the soundtrack to a video game, with sound effects added on top. That's not necessarily a bad thing. but I think the volume needs to be smoothed over throughout, otherwise it doesn't sound like the additional sounds are part of the record, if you see what I mean. The "ooo ooo" bits in the 'I have a dream...' section don't really work at the moment, as they are out of key, but you might be able to fix that with some pitch adjustments, as it's actually quite a nice idea.
An extravaganza of stuff happening in this mix. The stereo of this mix is great. I don't think it will be everyone's "cup of tea", but me myself, I love it!!! well done!!!
Now that you mention it, it does sound like sound effects in a video game. The whole song is kinda video-gamey anyway... So '80's.
My problem with adjusting these things (with the way I'm creating them) is that I'd have to start from scratch now to change any levels at all. Maybe I need more save points or different software. I'm just using a simple editor.
The out of key ooohs do stick out to me. The second set. I really tried to match the key but I was limited with material and it was getting late. The Da Da Da's make me laugh though.
Thanks again guys. This is a lot of fun. I think my girlfriend and our baby are wondering where I've been the last couple of days!

Yes, that's often been a problem I have faced, made even more frustrating when someone points out a tiny error, or wants a small part of the mix changed. What software are you using? You really need something like Sony Soundforge, or Adobe Audition, which will open many doors for you. I know these are not free, but someone told me about things called *cough* t-o-r-r-e-n-t-s, which might be of some use. [/img]
Ahhh yes. I know of these t-o-r-r-e-n-t-s that you speak of. My other problem (besides the wimpy software...) is my computer. Which is basically a fancy typewriter with speakers, technologically speaking.
Until I muster up some dosh for an upgrade (or get a job...) (Yes, I'm talking to you hiring managers in southeastern Michigan!) I'm leery about pouring any more memory sucking programs into this overtaxed box.
I do, however, have a few GB's set aside for you Mr. Fickle when you decide to make your remixes public again.
BTW, I'm using a program called Steinberg Lite which is not a bad editor. I don't think. Of course, I haven't used any others.
Until my finances improve I'll keep struggling along with what I have I guess. At least the beer is cheap.
I might get buzzed/crazy enough to have another go at it. I had a listen on my actual stereo and the imperfections and nonsense stick out like an auditory cartoon balloon thumb. I'm sure I could do better.
I think the latest version is definitely better, although I'm still not sure about the 'video game' style effects (personal opinion, might just be me). I like the instrumental bit after the guitar solo, and I wish I'd thought to do that in mine, which was knocking around here somewhere a few years back. I think I've reworked it since, so I'll try to dig it out and upload it sometime.
I'm not sure where the effects came from in this, but one principal I always tried to stick to with my own mixes, is only use actual bits from Queen songs, rather than 'outside' sounds / effects. Seemed have slightly more integrity (for myself) using that ethos.
I know what you mean about 'heavy' apps on a lowish spec machine. Adobe Audition is certainly guilty of hogging resources, but I found Sony Soundforge was quite a bit lighter, so if you can get hold of that, it might be worth a try.
The only thing that I created are the "tape drag" effects. I did that with a turntable and a Queen record so actually everything in my mix is from the song.
It's really hard to do anything really cool or different to these songs without isolated elements as I'm sure everyone realizes. My sources are a mix of cd's and lossy mp3's. Listening back, it's really obvious some of the eq differences in the different sources. I'm no engineer (though believe it or not, I did go to recording school!) and it's impossible to tweak this stuff very much before it turns into sonic goo.
I've been trying to think of another one to try my hand at. We'll see.
