i just decided to do some hard disk housekeeping this afternoon.
started off by being sentimental about it....but realised that was getting me nowhere.....so decided to make it a cold and clinical process.
criteria - if i ain't lsitened to it in last year - it's hsitory therefore deleted....
started off by copying ALL my rare tracks and demos to one folder, then using a renamer to sort them.
then attacked my "live gigs folders" this was 15 folders grouped by years with approx 200 sub folders....
decided to keep oNLy the gigs in good quality sound.....and gigs i liked...
anyhow, one hour later and i am 60gb better off....
just did the same to some of my other bands' gigs folders and am now 100gb more free space
I threw away about 500+ concerts (queen + other bands) 2 years ago after realising that I just don't give a damn about collecting inferiour sounding recordings from concerts I have never visited. Felt really good!
These days I only collect masters from Queen / solo and unknown footage (from Queen with Freddie Mercury)
And for some reason I always have a video recording from the concerts I visit :-)

I 'deleted' all my relatives that I haven't seen in the last 12 months. Man, that gives some space in my life!!
ps. Did you make a back up first?
why would i do that?
and i haven't finished yet.....probably need to be a little more brutal...but will get there...my 750gb external (music) drive
now has 480gb free space....target is to get it down to 550gb

For me free space is not a goal at all. When my hard drive is full I buy additional external hard drives. I do not mind to keep stuff I might not need because a time may come when I need it , after all. Like I do not throw out books I have not read for years because I might want to read them again some day. It's the collecting virus...

i agree with what you say. but the stuff i have ditched is unwanted.....live recordings that were barely audible and serving no purpose other than as curios. i have decided to keep every gig i have that has excellent sound quality and others that i either attended or love.
as for books....i thnk that's different. i have about 2 dozen books that i will read every five-ten years...in particular the three Douglas Adams - Dirk Gently books.
and dvds films, boxsets...love em
i think my decision is based on quality. some of those gigs, and shoddy recordings of queen demos etc were a waste of drive space...btw - just broken the 500gb free space barrier
