I've been having this arguement for a long time. Fish cannot drown. When a fish runs out of oxygen molecules to breathe, it will suffocate; not drown. Suffocation is the result of dying from lack of oxygen molecules to breathe. Drowning is the result of dying from water molecules entering your lungs (not gills), preventing your lungs from taking in air. A fish's gills take in water for the oxygen molecules and release the water that isn't needed. If there are no oxygen molecules to take in, then the fish will die from lack of oxygen, also known as suffocation. For a fish to successfully drown, it would have to die from the process of the gills taking in the water, which is impossible considering that fish take in water every few seconds. At that rate fish would be extinct already. anyone disagree? |

brENsKi wrote: i disagree. i have read it somewhere that fish can drown if water enters the gills backward...it can flood the gills with too much water....ie drowning but it's death would be the cause of lack of oxygen....ie suffocating. Drowning typically takes lungs. There are fish that have lungs, but even they don't drown. I love debating ;) |

if fish can drown... i don't know why, but this is weird! |

brENsKi wrote: no. fish can drown through too much oxygen entering their breathing organs...thereby giving the gills too much oxygen to process this can happen two ways:- When a fish is taken out of water, and exposed only to air, not to oxygen and hydrogen containing water, its gills are unable to control the oxygen intake, the delicate balance cannot be maintained, and the gills inhale a lethal overdose of oxygen. The fish essentially experiences death by "drowning." The same effect can replicated in the water by backward motion through the water with open gills. too great a quantity of water enters the gills too quickly, thereby creating too much oxygen to process.....again drowning and you are not debating. you are stating something as if it's a fact. you need to check your facts first. debate is about opinion not cold hard facts. But drowning isn't death by too much oxygen. |

Hey Brenski- Why'd you edit your posts out? I was really hoping that you could explain how water travels "backwards" through the gills. |
