Hey, all. I'm Em, I live in NY, and I've been a Queen fan for close to a decade now (I'm 23 at the moment). My fixation with them started in high school, when my circle of friends welcomed in a new schoolmate who was a huge fan of the band. Her love for them rubbed off on the rest of us and from there on in Queen became a sort of bonding experience for us (to the extent that we would occasionally refer to each other as Freddie, Roger, Brian, and John, as we all had our own favourite and our personalities seemed to overlap with them. I was, of course, Roger).
My most prized possessions are the two items I got signed by Roger and Brian when they hit up the Meadowlands on tour with Paul Rodgers in 2005 (it's a long story and I'll devote a separate post to it, but it was the single most exhilarating experience of my life). Brian signed my Greatest Hits, Vols. 1 &2 booklet and Roger signed a glass heart I got on my sixteenth birthday from my friends when they made me a leopard print, Roger Taylor themed care package. It's on a red ribbon and features the words "I Love Roger!" in script and his silhouette from the Hot Space album frosted onto the glass. Both of them were charming and complete gentlemen, and Roger even wrapped me up in a lovely bear hug. Gah, I will never stop crushing on that man.
Anyway, I DJ karaoke on the weekends, and one of our patrons did a couple of Queen songs. I chatted with him afterwards (mostly about pre-News of the World Queen), and he was surprised I knew as much as I know about them and am familiar with so much of their early music given my relatively young age. I even proudly flashed him my iPod, as it's skinned with a Queen design (this one specifically, I just got my iPod Touch two weeks ago and plastered it on straight out of the box!). In any case, I had such a lovely time chatting with him in depth about their music and our admiration for the band that I thought I'd come on here and find other people to verbally flail with. My friends live all over the country and sometimes it's hard to keep in touch, and I hadn't until last night realized what a huge, Queen-shaped hole there was in my life.
Sorry for rambling on so long. In any case, I hope to back-and-forth with you all soon, and I'm happy to be a member of this community!
QUESTION: Have you guys ever had any random bonding experiences with strangers over Queen, like I did last night? Seems, given yesterday's encounter and my friendships in high school, that Queen has the magical power of bringing awesome people together through their awesome music. Not surprising!
Well, dear, let me be the first to welcome you, if not warn you.
While I most certainly hope you enjoy yourself, please take EVERYTHING (and I mean EVERYTHING) here with a grain of salt. While this site has its shares of ups and downs, it certainly helps to keep a bit of cynicism on your side.
Too much drama and stupid questions, if you like either you're in the right spot.
I think someone earlier said "people seem more interested in hotel soap then music" in reference to some of the topics started around here, and I couldn't agree more.
To sum it up, imo, this site is a silly little dump that takes itself WAY too seriously, but it occasionally realizes it's supposed to say something mildly related to Queen, even if it IS just the same question worded differently.
Heck, I watched Passions with a, cough, passion when I was younger, so drama is totally up my alley (not in being participatory in it, more with respect to standing on the sidelines and watching it unfold). I'm a member of so many communities and forums (mostly rooted in LiveJournal, honestly) that I am well aware of the less than appealing aspects of fandom when the intarwebz enters the equation. Eek. It squicks me a little to use the term "fandom" in relation to Queen, to be honest.
Are there any sites in particular you would recommend for people looking to [re]connect with Queen fandom on a, perhaps, less, um, hotel-soapy level? I'm glad to hang around here but I'd love to have an array of options so I can really find my footing with the right group of people. That said, BlazeGoldmine, I get a feeling you and I would mesh well. What's your username a reference to, if I may be so bold as to ask?
