The countdown is on for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The winter games begin this Friday, February 12th 2010. I'm curious to know if anyone is interested in any of the games and will be watching?? Or are you one of the lucky going to Vancouver B.C. to be a spectator?? |

I think it's funny that the U.S. poster child, this year, (Lindsey Vonn) is now doubtful to even ski. That was a heck of a lot of money to soak into that campaign. Germany will get the most medals. |

I'm going! I'm so excited. There's going to be a massive holiday here, and it's one I particularly dislike, and I decided to make something different this year and, voilà, I'm going to see the games. I must be leaving in a few hours, if there's no unreasonable delay. : )))) I think I'm going to have a very good time. It's been years since I did something that different - I usually travel to the same places and do the same things. So, well, there's hope this change is going to be for the better. : ))) |

That sounds great, Yara! Please give us lots of reports if you can. Hope you have a wonderful time. |

Here in the DC/Baltimore area, we received 4' of snow in four days. 'What global warming?' per the 'experts' at FOX. Meanwhile, in Vancouver, people are out golfing this week. The opening ceremonies will be indoors, because of rain, as well as the fact that they have no snow. They are more than welcome to all of ours. Forecasts for the next 7-10 days have temps in the high 40's to low 50's (Farenheit) and more rain. Lows will not reach freezing. Hockey and any type of 'racing' hold my interest, though the ski boarding is gaining appeal to this old timer. Looking forward to reading some first-hand accounts here, and hope you packed some rain gear. edit: indoor ceremonies were ALWAYS planned for the football stadium. I had heard (from FOX) that they were being moved indoors to their basketball arena. my bad |

I'll watch the hockey, the only chance for a Swedish medal I guess. Have a great time YARA! |

aparantly our goosefat greased baking tray slider is the UK flag bearer at the opening ceremony and Colin Hendry's sister is back doing the lump of rock and the broomsweeping on ice event again for which we won gold 8 years ago :-p i still reckon Janet should put in a bid to host the next one in her garden ;-] |

A 21 year old Georgian luger has died on a training run. So upsetting. And of course likely to put a pall on much that follows, particularly tonight's ceremonies. And there are pictures, PICTURES, of him leaving the track and smacking into a metal pole on multiple news outlets. That's absoutely reprehensible. |
andreas_mercury 13.02.2010 00:16 |
lol i heard there was a 'huge accident' had myself no idea they even meant 'luge' cant imagine the shame of dying in the worlds easiest event ..... lie down, wiggle ass, let gravity take over RIP Nodar though it is a sad day for his country |

The death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili cast a shadow on the games. He was only 21 years old and surely all his family and friends must have been so happy for him and then such a tragedy happens. The other athletes must feel very bad now. Since the games will go on I hope to watch ski jumping, bobsleigh (yes...), biathlon, speed skating and hockey. It will be late night TV all the way. Yara - have a great time, it must be very exciting to be there. I would love to donate some snow which we have in abundance :-) |
*goodco* 13.02.2010 10:10 |
ya gotta love IOC officials in regards to the death of the Georgian luger link Read also where a Romanian woman luger was knocked unconscious the previous day during a trial run. Risk is involved in any sport, and everyday life to varying degrees. But when chronic complaints arise from knowledgeable and concerned individuals, safeguards are supposed to be implemented so that incidents like this are avoided. oh, and as to this being an 'easy' sport.......if it was, everyone would do it, correct? They understand the danger. Call it courage or foolhardiness. But they don't expect the danger to be life threatening. |
pittrek 13.02.2010 15:01 |
I may sound stupid, but I think the Olympics should be canceled or at least delayed. If death in the first day isn't a good reason, what is ? What kind of society did we become when invested money is more important then showing respect to a death colleague ? |
JoxerTheDeityPirate 13.02.2010 15:13 |
when one gets on a small goosefat greased baking tray and travels downhill for a mile at 95mph on ice then one is taking their life in their hands. He knew the risks before he died so in my opinion [for what its worth] they've [the IOC] have done the right thing in moving it to the womens track to cut down on the risk of further death or injury but they should never cancel the games because of it.On saying that, they could of and should of insured that the crash barrier was sufficient enough to of saved his life. "the show must go on" as some group once sang... |

Shocking and sad hearing about the 21 year old luger who lost his life in that terrible accident. May he rest in Peace By TIM REYNOLDS AND TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writers WHISTLER, British Columbia(AP)— Fast and frightening, yes. Responsible for the death of a luger, no. Olympic officials decided late Friday night against any major changes in the track or any delays in competition and even doubled up on the schedule in the wake of the horrifying accident that claimed the life of a 21-year-old luger from the republic of Georgia. They said they would raise the wall where the slider flew off the track and make an unspecified “change in the ice profile” - but only as a preventative measure “to avoid that such an extremely exceptional accident could occur again.” Within sight of the finish line, Nodar Kumaritashvili crashed coming out of the 16th turn and slammed into an unpadded steel pole while traveling nearly 90 mph. Despite frantic attempts by paramedics to save his life, he died at a trauma center. Concerns about the lightning-fast course had been raised for months. There were worries that the $100 million-plus venue was too technically difficult, and a lack of significant practice time by everyone but the host nation’s sliders would result in a rash of accidents. But the International Luge Federation and Vancouver Olympic officials said their investigation showed that the crash was the result of human error and that “there was no indication that the accident was caused by deficiencies in the track.” In a joint statement they said Kumaritashvili was late coming out of the next-to-last turn and failed to compensate. “This resulted in a late entrance into curve 16 and although the athlete worked to correct the problem, he eventually lost control of the sled, resulting in the tragic accident.” |

What kind of society did we become when invested money is more important then showing respect to a death colleague ? Do you know how many millions of dollars you're talking about over one dead luger? C'mon, really? Completely re-program NBC's schedule for this guy? Now, if LeBron James collided with the backboard and was instantly killed, OK. |

I dunno, I've tried to keep up with the Winter Games this year but nothing can really match the excitement or drama of a luge artist wiping himself off the map on the first day. I don't mean that in the ghoulish sense, but I mean really .... you can't top the dead guy. That's just how it is... |

It is immensely sad, and your heart just breaks for her knowing that the wonderful high of participating in the Olympics and the terrible low of the sudden death of a parent will always be intertwined. But I'm not sure about lauding her for courage and strength. It's not for anyone on the outside to know if skating, or not skating, would have been harder. If it would have been more psychologically difficult for her to consider not skating for her mom, her family, her town, her country and her career, then it's not really courage or strength. If anything, I'd say it's the ability to block and focus in an extreme circumstance, something all successful high level athletes are trained for years to do. My point really is that the media indulgence on this has been predictable, and the well meaning people have been predictable, and I can't think of it as anything but one more burden on Joannie Rochette, who doesn't need a bunch of qualities and expectations imposed on her during a numbing and heartbreaking time when she herself probably doesn't completely know how she feels or why she skated or what the impact of her decisions will be. |

so £5.8m spent on the GB team for these Olympiads and we get ONE medal with the girl on her baking tray, bring on the proper ones in 2 years time where we've spent £1bn on the the arena in London that looks like a IKEA fruit bowl in the East End and trains that wont work or get there on time,we should get at least 5 medals then at this rate. what a waste of public spending! |
