Lester, Sir GH, Scully, John S Stuart, Sebastian, a few others : if you haven't already, you should collectively apply for the job ! I'm serious there. Greg leeches like crazy from your research on these boards anyway ! Because not only do we know Greg is not the most capable archivist and endearing human being in the whole world, but we also know a handful of well identified individuals who could do his job much better and be better ambassadors among the fan community I mean, look at Jeroen's cool proposal for a Knebworth boxset : in comparison, The Singles boxset didn't even have a booklet, for crap's sake! I know no business environment in which someone with credentials can insult customers with impunity and rant about how he might start working in the distant future when his employers are dead because it's easier to work with dead people. Greg's only achievment was a pre-Internet Live book which has spectacularly been surpassed by several websites managed by Queenzoners... Send this application to QP and The Doctor NOW, boys ! If you get the job I'll send you some good champagne, I really will |

i that wish piittrek and sir gh work for QP. they're giving us fans what we want here on QZ, imagine if they had all those master tapes, multitracks... it would be heaven! queen complete bbc and queen anthology would be some of the treats they would give us |

To be fair you're blaming Greg for things he has no control over, such as the wank singles box sets. Greg does not decide what is released and how it should be released. What ever gave you that idea? There is a clue in the title 'Queen Archivist' as to what his role is. Queen zone is going to end up being re-named Queen Moan at this fucking rate, there are too many people on here bitching and moaning. It's not going to change anything and it's getting a bit tired now. |

GB was already respected Queen collector before he became QA. Queen Productions' and EMI decisions are something that we don't like, I guess. |

I'm sorry, maybe I'll get some flack on this, but I don't believe that it is GB who is posting as Queen Archivist. I just have a hard time buying it. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm right. Queen moan...fitting for some of the ppl on here, not for others. But a rather funny title if nothing else. |

I don't want to defend Greg, not now after his ridiculous post about the unreleased stuff; but he's not responsible for the stuff released. In fact he detailed here at QZ the project he proposed (being refused by the superior beings) for The Singles Collection. That was a good one. But now, dear Archivist .... you talked about the anthology; you wrote about the anthology; you played unreleased stuff so many times .... and now you come here with these things to tell us. .... no no no .... bad boy, dear archivist ... bad boy. |

If they are recruited by QP and then upload stuff from the official archives, they'll probably land in prison. Like others have pointed out, an Archivist only archives stuff. He certainly has not control and very little say (if at all) in what gets released. Having said that, Mr Brooks certainly doesn't try too hard to make freinds here at QZ. He just comes in here once in a while, starts some thread (often in the wrong section) and goes away. If QZers are already pissed off at QP, this employee of QP doesn't make things better. |
Sebastian 07.02.2010 17:47 |
There is, however, a way around it. I'll speak for myself of course, and obviously biased and focused on my field: even not being able to share audio, I could add loads of info I've always wanted to polish and verify: stuff like what was the backing track like (line-up, changes), who played what, which studios were used, which songs came first (in the sessions, that is), which ideas were dropped, etc. While it wouldn't be even close to having the anthologies released, it'd be quite interesting for those who like that side of music: seeing how the songs evolved from demos to finished versions and so on. GB could do that without breaking any rules or compromising upcoming releases, but instead he'd rather alienate QZers and top himself every time in the 'most imbecile poster' category. |

Hmmm nobody here thinks GB is Brian May or Roger Taylor or Jim Beach or even a QP product manager for that matter. But I do believe that proposing cool releases and connecting with the fanbase is part of his job. So his last post (insulting us and informing us that maybe he if feels like it he'll consider thinking about an Anthology proposal when Bri and Rog are dead) is just the most shockingly unprofessional thing conceivable. As for awful releases such as Stone Cold Classics or The Singles Collection (AG is not so bad IMO), I'm not saying that was his decision, I'm saying he could have done a better job at convincing TPTB to put out a better product. |

Personally, I have nothing against GB - and I have no problems about how Queen PLC wish to conduct their business. What I find personally frustrating is the smug anti-answers and flim-flam to otherwise simple straight-forward questions, which deserve little more than a 'YES' or 'NO' answer. To me, this attitude (or policy) borders on taking the piss out of one's clientele. Asking if there is a Queen version of 'Victory' or Andy Gibb and Freddie duet of 'The Game' - is not really up there with the betrayal of the Free-Masonic 'Grand Hailing Sign of Distress' nor is it rocket science. So there are three possible polite and accurate answers... 1: As far as I know, those tracks do not exist... 2: My personal research indicates that a partial/ version of the tracks do exist... 3: Unfortunately, at this time, I do not know because that is still one of our major tasks which is still in hand... Three simple answers that could be used for (IMO) 90% of Queenzone answers. How anyone could accept answers outside those terms of reference as a breach of confidentiality is beyond me. Why such answers need to both convoluted - and rude and insulting - is (IMO) not acceptable interaction between any groups of human beings. |

I agree about what John said. I don't really know how the archives are dealt with, but I think the main goal of an archivist is first to work FOR THE BAND. No more to say about that, this is communication between the band and its archivist. Greg most probably do a good job, if he is still there, I don't worry about that. Then, a second perspective is to use this fonction of archivist as an intermediary between a band and its fan base, am I right saying so? Therefore, to communicate with the fans, it needs some more transparent answers (even if all can't be said I guess). If the said archivist is not quite transparent (whether he doesn't feel like or he isn't allowed to), then the link with the fans is wrong; moreover, with time, this link can't be have a perverse effect, the fans now using the archivist as a medium to express their frustration about not being involved, or having the feeling not to be kept in touch or something. I think this quite happened here, at least for a part of us. This is probably the case even more because the band is not really "active" anymore as a recording band (I mean no projects of releases of brand new music from the band are known at the time, only side projects). Therefore, the fan base, to be kept alive and awake, needs some more information about the past, to better know the band and continue purchasing the new compilations, collecting and so on, and to be waken up if the band finally launches a brand new project. When the fans doesn't have the perspective they would like to have in the future, and doesn't think the answers they get regarding the past career (the vaults, the rare stuff, the next thing the fans would like to see released or to get information about) are quite satisfying, obscure, there is a problem. I wonder how a community could last several years longer that way, not even how it could keep on growing. Queenzone is a best tool to meet between fans.. .Remains the questions of connecting with the band. Of course all can't be said (after all, maybe an ultimate anthology project is still somewhere waiting for the perfect moment to be released). The risk is that the possible buyers of a Queen anthology will have turned their noses towards other bands / hobbies once the Ultimate Archive Anthology would be released. Not so good commercially in the end. Interaction isn't fully effective here. That said, I don't know how the problem is dealt with amongst other fan communities. To sum up, my guess is there is a problem of communication between the band and the fans through the archivist (I'm only talking about the band's archives here). The archivist as used now is not the good tool it could be, and can even have a negative effect. Or the band changes its way of communication about the archives, changing its "depth" on communication or finding another platform or whatever, or most fans will finally feel "bored" somewhat at one point. Don't tell me most of you haven't felt that way at least once in your existence as a Queen collector, I won't believe you. Regards, Olivier, Belgium. |

to the person who started this thread - this is a joke right? you do realise that GB has NOTHING to do with whatever QP puts out? yes he does research, and I'm sure he pitches ideas as well. but make no mistake, in the end it's up to brian, roger and jim beach (and john's accountant probably) I'm under the impression that the product GB has been most involved with is the FM solo box - which incidentally is the best Queen/related releae by a F**** mile I'm sure there are other fans who is as knowledgable on Queen as GB - but to change GB with one of these wouldn't have ANY influence on future Queen releases. to map out other posters proposals to releases and compare them to the actual releases and blame GB's work is so stupid it's beyond words. if you're reading this GB; if you have the same input on a Queen anthology as the Freddie box it'll be a killer |

Everyone knows GB doesnt' have the final say. That complaint -- that we don't understand how it works -- is just a red herring he throws out when he gets flustered (like the "do you want me to make things up" comment on a different thread. No that's the exact opposite of what we want ferchristsake). The problem arises because he mines this website and the fans looking for info for his books, for which he and Queen will make a financial profit, yet provides little or no useful info in return. |
