Thank you. Was the 2004 Japan discs remastered or did they just use the 2001's ? One site says they were remastered on another says they wasn't.
The 2001 releases are 24bit remasters. The 2004 Mini Vinyls have the same mastering as the 2001 discs.
As an audiophile that has bought a ton of Queen, including the Japanese remasters, I can honestly say that I wouldn't spend the money. They are simply remastered "louder". It will sound impressive at first, but tiring and muddy as you listen. The best remasters are the 1994 British ones.
The best sounding on cd are the Japanese NON-remasters from the 80's. Although Queen isn't really in the worst of the "loudness war", the newer remasters are louder. Search "loudness war" to see what I mean. Keep your old cd's, trust me. I sol dmy old ones thinking tha tthe remasters were always better. I had to RE-BUY my old ones. Remastering for the most part really has become a joke and a farce. I fell for it for almost 2 decades

Sorry, Im a bit busy and I can't to say much about it cause english isn't my native language, but Japanese 2001 and 2004 remasters in some way are the best, cause they use 24 bit transfer technology which enhanches the low and mid frecuencies, they aren't simply louder but they are deeper, on the other hand the cleanest 2001-2004 remasters are The Miracle and Innuendo, they are distortion free, the others remaster distort on drums mainly and some bass. By other side if You buy the DVD-Audio versions of ANATO and THE GAME you will get the very best sound available at the moment casue are truly 24 bits audio and contains all the lost frecuencies in the cd 16Bits/44Khz format but You will need a special DVD-Audio Player
Re: U.S. Platinum Collection: For Greatest Hits II, they definitely used a remastered version. I would assume this was the 2001 remaster. Tracks such as A Kind of Magic, Radio Ga Ga, Innuendo and The Miracle, which faded out a bit early on the 1991 master, are restored to their full-length. The total running time has increased from 75:59 to 76:28.
I recall there being a delay before the U.S. Platinum Collection was released, and a press release stating that Hollywood wanted to 'fix a few things' so I always assumed that the extra time enabled them to use the 2001 remasters for I & II. I wouldn't think III was affected, since it was only a couple years old at the time.
I gave up buying any of these "remasters" unless they will turn out to be "original remixes".
The last remaster I tried was the Japanese 2001 version of "Queen 2". It sounds as muddy as usual.
Recently I "remastered" it myself. Which is very interesting. You can easily get it a whole lot clearer, but then you will also find a lot of clicks and strange noises in the recordings.
And I guess this is the reason why they always stuck to the muddy sound of "Queen 2".
But in the age of mp3-downloads and people listening to music with computer speakers or even cell phones I doubt, that they will invest in really improved versions of those albums in the near future....
Does anyone know if the 'Live At Wembley Stadium' 2003 remaster CD was released also in jewelcase in Japan or only in 2004 mini-vinyl series with Cat No. TOCP-67464/65 ?
