I don’t believe that Freddie’s death was due to drugs. I read several essays from here that he was framed and in fact, it was the death penalty for refusing to sing in some countries. I think this is very likely because Mercury was a very positive and sensible person, he stopped using drugs when he was 23 years old.

Gotta say though, I am not familiar with Kesey's book. That's one I've never read.
It's a good book, but the real substance is lost on most people (including myself, probably), because so much of it is a criticism of mental health treatment in the '50s, and I don't think many today are familiar with the details of that kind of thing.
Still, an interesting and enjoyable (if occasionally disturbing) read, hilarious at times and certainly not boring.
