I was just listening to this song today and really I guess for the 1st time listened to the lyrics and it really sounds like it might have been recorded for the Queen II album because it has alot to do with mythology and fantasy which alot of the material on Queen II was about. Its still amazes me after all these years of being such a fan of Queen and owning all their albums that I can still kinda like rediscover a song all over again or take a listen at something and kinda hear things that before I either never paid attention too or didn't realize were there before. Its the only song on Sheer Heart Attack that's like it, and that's why I wondered if maybe this was recorded for the Queen II album and left off of it or recorded around the same time as the sessions for Queen II.
I guess it could be? To me it's of a similar mood, and level of prettiness, to a lot of Queen II stuff. But it's slightly less 'out there' so I mean maybe they thought they'd put it off. Who knows.
It could have been written around the time of the QUEEN II sessions or it could have been one of the songs in circulation at the time but they probably settled on Nevermore instead. Same thing with Sheer Heart Attack. It was written but not finished during the SHA sessions but finished and finally recorded for the NOTW sessions and LP.
"Messenger from seven seas has flown/To tell the king of Rhye he's lost his throne" may references also to pre-Queen II days (since SSoR appeared before it).
Well see what a fool ive been was b sided from queen 2 sessions. Seven seas comes up as a subject on a few queen tracks. Here is a better question on machines instrumental version theres a few queen tracks mixed into it, but theres one i cant work out, it sounds like shove it but as we know that came out after any ideas anybody???
I know that the song is about the land of "Rhye" which was some fantasy world Freddie dreamed up when he was a youth, and since alot of the songs on Queen II are about Rhye and the creatures and goings on in Rhye I figured it was only natural this song would be more at home on Queen II rather than Sheer Heart Attack. I did however find an interesting theory on this song on here. It's Freddie's way of saying goodbye to that mythical world and kinda growing up, as really after this song the band never really delved again into the fantasy realm and pretty much became a straight on pop/rock band. Freddie never again wrote a song referencing this imaginary land and the song has a very melancholy feel as if someone who is parting ways with one phase of life and beginning another....Just a thought
