Micrówave 01.12.2009 01:19 |
There's a little piece of AIDS on his chin. You have to look really close, though. I thought it was a piece of taco meat at first. |
john bodega 01.12.2009 01:59 |
(shrugs) to me it just looks like he went a little heavy on the makeup. 20 years of hindsight means we now know the reason why, but at the time I wouldn't have looked at that and said "That man looks ill". |
Gregsynth 01.12.2009 02:23 |
I do know that Freddie did have some spots removed from his face. He used makeup, then the beard to hide the blemishes. If anything, apart from the beard, he looks a bit fatter in the face. If you simply switched his beard out for his mustache, he's back to his "pre-AIDS" self. He looked great for all the Miracle-Era videos. |
mike hunt 01.12.2009 03:06 |
fred looks a bit chubby in the miracle photo, not ill at all. The video's for that album he looks much thinner, but still healthy. He had the light beard thing going. It wasn't until 1990 that he started to looked really ill. |
ParisNair 01.12.2009 04:13 |
Compare this with 1986 and you know something is amiss. It still shocks me how a man who looked at his absolute peak healthwise just 3-4 years earlier falls so sick so fast that life just goes out of his body. |
pittrek 01.12.2009 05:02 |
I'm just re-posting the image : link Well he doesn't look much healthy to me :( He looks strange, but not like a man with a deadly disease |

Martin Packer 01.12.2009 09:09 |
Three things: 1) His eyes look pained. Whether psychologically or physically. 2) I'm told some of the anti-AIDS drugs have an effect on cheek shape. 3) I think he may well have attempted to bulk up, knowing he'd lose a lot of weight in the end. I don't particularly like to think about this stuff. And I recall being totally fooled at that time. But with the benefit of hindsight here we are. |

It wasn't until 1990 that he started to looked really ill. When DID he start losing the weight? I mean, I watched "I Want It All" and he does look a bit swollen up. My guess was sometime between late '89 to early '90 because if you compare him from any of the Miracle-era videos to a video when Queen accepted the "Top Band of The 80's" reward, he's starting to look gaunt in the face. |

The Headlong video was remarkable for it's record of Freddie's physical decline over just a few short months. The footage was shot from fall '90 into early '91 and you can clearly see how much more gaunt and sick looking he was in the yellow sweater parts as compared to the shirt and tie (earliest footage) and vest (waistcoat to some) shots from 1990. |

Why is this topic continually such a morbid fascination for people? Do you get some pleasure in highlighting and noting the regression of Freddie's appearance? I mean I been a member on here for like 5 or 6 years now and I wish I had a dollar for every topic that was centered around Freddie's sick appearance, when did Freddie know he had AIDS?, how many lovers did Freddie have, Does anybody have any pics of Freddie sick with AIDS...etc, etc. There's so much else to talk about besides Freddie's appearance and fight with AIDS....You want morbid go to Rotten.com....Peace |

Freddie looks strange in 1989, while you can see him in "normal" state in late '88, early '89 pics (with the blue jacket), in mid 1989...in breakthru pics, one into the train..and both you can see in the inner sleeve of GH II DVD; he looks like he grew old 10 or 15 years in 6 months...and so in IWIA. and Invisible Man video..by the end of 1989 and 1990 he was clearly gaunt...but in Breakthtru, al least by me, Freddie looks like he was 53 o more years old...maybe, and avoiding his ilness the way he would look...in 2001 If he wasn't passed away... maybe nonsense, maybe not...just an opinion. |

We first saw that photo at the convention in 1989. We thought Freddie had let himself go and put on weight. With hindsight I guess it was a reaction to his medication, though there's no way we thought of that at the time. |

Unless he was years off the mean, he was probably HIV positive by the late 1970's. If Barbara Valentin is to be found credible there were some worrying physical symptoms back to 1985. I think at the very least he probably had entered a period of worry/denial by the Magic Tour. |

It's all speculative of course, and I only think about it when I allow myself the occasional fantasy that things turned out entirely differently. The average time between untreated HIV infection and the development of AIDS symptoms is 9 years or so, with most developing the disease by 10 years. At the outer margins of the statistics are the people that live with untreated HIV for 20 or more years, and those that develop full blown AIDS in a matter of weeks. The first people to get sick in 80/81 probably had been infected a decade before. In a totally unscientific and potentially meaningless observation, Freddie had his affair with Joe Fanelli in 1978, and Joe developed AIDS and died shortly after Freddie did. |

In a totally unscientific and potentially meaningless observation, Freddie had his affair with Joe Fanelli in 1978, and Joe developed AIDS and died shortly after Freddie did. I hate going into this but I remember in a Peter Jones interview he said he had debated with Freddie whether Freddie should go out with Winnie or another friend and he said the other friend ended up with Joe - this was in 1984 so I think there was a lot of overlapping sexual activity. Besides both were probably exposed on many more occasions, so speculation is meaningless but tempting. Interestingly the mean time from infection to AIDS is 10 yrs but after 'full blown AIDS' as karposi's sarcoma is indicative of, the mean life expectancy is between 1-2 yrs and Freddie lived for 5 - so he could feasibly have got it later or something. Blah blah blah. It's so interesting, the whole story and development of AIDS and the political reaction of the Reagan administration. One thing that blows my mind is HIV wasn't discovered until 1984 so before that I imagine the attitude was, if you weren't sick and exhibiting physical symptoms, you hadn't caught it yet. Stephen Fry made a very interesting 2 part documentary which is on youtube called 'HIV & Me'. Very informative and worth watching. |
little foetus 15.12.2009 08:56 |
It's impossible to know when Freddie was infected by HIV. The time between HIV-infection and AIDS-stage is from few months to 10 years and it depends on many factors: viral load, CD4 count, efficiency of treatment, adherence to treatment, virus resistance, sexually transmitted diseases. There's still no consensus on this question. |

I actually think that Freddie looks really gorgeous with a beard/'designer stubble', heh. Despite the illness and the 'deadened look' in his eyes. I think he looks great. I had always wondered why he had suddenly chosen to sport that look, but now it seems quite obvious that he grew his beard to hide the blemishes caused by his illness. I love how he took it all in his stride. Amazing, courageous man. |
