People beware!!! This book is VERY good and full of rare photos and a lot of tour memorabilia from Peter Hince BUT there are NUMEROUS mistakes that Mr. Sutcliffe and his editors got wrong! There is a page with all the ANATO tour dates on it but it's listed as the Sheer Heart Attack tour. Flip a few pages before and there are all the SHA tour dates listed under that title. There are some photos that are not even with the time period. In other words, there is a shot of Freddie in his leather outfit from 79 but the caption states that it was from Rotterdam 78. A photo of a 1980 Christmas fan club magaznie has the caption that it was from 1983. According to Queen folklore John Deacon put his hand through a plate glass windo on the 77 NOTW tour in San Diego requiring 19 stitches. This book claims that Roger was the one involved in the incident AND insisted that he continue the tour. A photo towards the front of the book shows Freddie in his leotard from ADATR tour and the photo credit states that it was from 1975. The list goes on. I've been a longtime fan for 32 years and went through those years with the band. Went through the Hot Space debacle, lost interest in them around 83, got back into them in 84 and stuck by them ever since. How can a book that is put together very nicely be so wrong with information? Nice job on putting the book togehter Mr. Sutcliffe but your researcers and editors suck!!! Next time you or ANY writer wants to put out a book on Queen, come here to Queen Zone and ask us first. We'll set you straight. I'm sure once more fans read this book this message board will be flooded with pissed off Queen fans. Happy reading Queen fans!!! |

There's even mistakes in the AG book For example. It shows Roger's original lyrics for AKOM,but at the bottom of the page says its the original lyrics for One Vision. You'd think they'd get something like that right!!! |

Well mickypraise I think with the amount of money I spent on this book you would expect the data to be at least 100% correct. First the Greg Brooks book where he was ragged on mercilessly for the inconsistancies in it to the point he had to re-do the book and ad the parts he missed. Still not to everyone's satisfaction. To answer your question... no, not everybody will be happy with it. This band needs a book that fans can appreciate and know that the info is correct. When you see a photo of a Christmas fan club magazine that clearly states 1980 on it and the caption reads 1983... there's a problem with the editors. For the amount of money we'll be shelling out for this book you better believe that people want their monies worth. Queen always worked towards perfection in their shows and records and as fans I think we deserve absolute perfection when it comes to a book highlighing their career. |

Fully agreed. Fact checking is a part of the job description if you're a writer or editor. If a Beatles book came out and had pictures of the band seeing the Maharishi in 1968, Beatles fans would be all over it like a fat kid on chocolate, since that happened in 1967. And rightfully so. History is history. Facts are facts. If you can't write something factual and organize your data properly, then you should seek a different line of work. It would be like a painter selecting the wrong colour or an electrician cutting the wrong wire. A job is a job, and they need to be done properly. That said, Georg Purvis' book "Complete Works" is about as close to a perfect book on Queen you can get. |

The world is not going to end because dates are wrong in a book, or a tale is about a wrong person. Lighten up, there is not ever going to be a perfect flawless book for that matter. All I'm saying is ease up, it's just dates in a book about a band. Noone forced you to buy the book. Read it and quit nitpicking about freakin dates, it is not really that important, there is more important things in life then a Queen book that has a wrong date under a fan club magazine. And if you think you have all the right dates and information, then you write a book. A job is a job is a job.....and you have accidents at jobs....geez..... |

Just because there are plenty of people who do their job improperly doesn't excuse others from doing the same thing. When I buy a sofa, I trust it not to fall apart next year. When I buy food, I trust it won't be contaminated. And when I buy a book, I'm trusting that the author is well informed. Why put furniture together if you don't know how to nail in a 2x4? Why be a chef if you don't value washing your hands? And why be an author if you don't know how to cross-examine information? Sure, accidents happen at jobs, but they are usually spur of the moment things. As an author, you have all the time in the world to plan your work and get your facts right. there is more important things in life then a Queen book that has a wrong date under a fan club magazineThat's true. But I think people should be allowed to discuss the lesser important things in life. How boring would life be if we only discussed the same few things that we deem to be 'most important' ? And if you think you have all the right dates and information, then you write a book. The fact that someone isn't a published author shouldn't limit them from critiquing someone else's work. Otherwise, we become a society of yes-men who essentially applaud others for their mistakes. If someone has a hobby to the extent of being very knowledgeable of a particular subject, they shouldn't be required to write a book to legitimize their thoughts. |

If someone has a hobby to the extent of being very knowledgeable of a particular subject, they shouldn't be required to write a book to legitimize their thoughts. 4. The fact that someone isn't a published author shouldn't limit them from critiquing someone else's work. Otherwise, we become a society of yes-men who essentially applaud others for their mistakes. 1. Don't buy the book from a author you don't know nothing about. 2. And some of the things discussed on here isn't overkill? Same old thing, same old topics, people complaining about whats out and whats not, we are just fans, that's all, nothing more nothing less. And I really feel bad for the new ones on here, because they make one comment and get such ignorant replies, it's a shame. Do you really think we have a input in Queen Productions and others, what they put out? I think not. This is a nice site to discuss Queen stuff but when it comes to complaining, it does no good, it is what it is. 3. Once again, don't buy the book, is that so difficult? Whats the use of complaining about it, just ignore it. Maybe the younger Queen fans get some enjoy out of it, and the younger generation isn't going to care about "dates" in it, and if they do, they will read and watch more Queen material and become knowledgeable. Queen is over, the facts are facts, nothing is going to change history and so one book isn't going to cover the whole history of Queen, your going to get some facts that are debatable some that are not true and you'll never know all the facts, the only ones that know the facts are Freddie,Brian,John and Roger, and I'm sure they don't even remember some of the dates or things they did. We do not live in a perfect world. 4. If you buy a book that isn't from a published author, why do you buy it? You know there is going to be mistakes in it, but you still buy it, and then complain about it. Buy it for your collection, display it, or whatever, and be done with it. And who is applauding it and what has this got to do with being a yes-men? It's a book with wrong dates, that's all. And your comparing it to the shuttle and the important things in life, well hate to tell you, it's nothing but words and pictures on paper. That's all, not about lifes daily tasks. You buy cheap furniture, sure it's going to fall apart after awhile, you eat fast food, sure some day you'll get sick, you really think all the chefs wash there hands? We don't live in a perfect world. And just because someone else buys it, you have to buy it, it's your choice, don't try to keep up with the Joneses. Queenzone put up a nice contest on here, and the first comment was the book is full of errors. Wow. |
GT 28.11.2009 10:34 |
Of course these mistakes will be made if the they don't run this book pass the fans first, which they could of done. A read through by someone who knows what to look for could of been arranged but wasn't. And this is not a Queen productions book by the way, otherwise it would of been checked more thoroughly. But mistakes are annoying when you are reading a book, glad I'm not the only one to of spotted these errors. |

And your comparing it to the shuttle and the important things in life, well hate to tell you, it's nothing but words and pictures on paper. Fair points overall in your last post, but this one here I had to address. It certainly is not just words and pictures on a paper. A comment like that is treading the fine line of degrading authorship and art as a whole. To some people these things are very important. Art contributes to society just as much as any other aspect of life we cherish. And like any other field, it deserves to be treated with care and respect, especially by those within the field. If someone isn't up for the job in the interest of doing a particular project properly, then they should step aside and give it to someone who is. Now, having acquired this new book by Phil Sutcliffe, I have to say, it is superb. Yes, there are a few small errors here and there, but it is nothing compared to the hundreds of glaring errors by Greg Brooks in his most recent tome. Phil Sutcliffe's book is stunningly excellent in content, organization, and execution. There are plenty of never before seen pictures (particularly from Ratty's collection), and new stories and anecdotes. I recommend all Queen fans to grab this one. |
YourValentine 29.11.2009 04:06 |
What I like most about the book - apart from the many unseen pictures - are the guest essays: reviews of albums which are written by fans and writers who have all their own personal perspective writing about the album they picked. It's very interesting to read all these intelligent essays. I have not even finished reading but I find the book very enjoyable - notwithstanding the errors. It's not even very expensive for the luxurious outfit, high quality scans and high quality paper - less than 20 pounds on amazon. This is what Phil Sutcliffe writes on the acknowledgement page: "If you Queen fans think you've found any mistakes or even misinterpretations....... please don't shoot off anything other than a corrective email - we are doing our best here" :-) |

I thought the review for the miracle was pretty harsh, lol...I know the album wasn't up to Queen standards, but to compare it with Judas Preist Jugulator is plain wrong. Jugulator was pure trash....... I did like most of the reviews though, Jazz and the first album were good ones. |
*goodco* 28.01.2010 15:30 |
The reviewer of 'The Miracle' (who was spot on IMO) was comparing it to 'Jugulator' more as each band's 13th studio album, just as a reference, and seemed to be putting down the Judas Priest effort. Just noticed the inner cover pictures were from Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan of all places (the K-Wing banner hangs between the USA and Canadian flags). Liner notes mention it being from the Jan 77 show. I could have been any one of the long hairs in attendance. Good memories. |

When I was 12 years old I might have liked though. The miracle did have it's moments, the title track was good dispite the lryics, which I admit were a bit of a mess. Breakthru, was it all worth it?......Scandal. Of course we're not gonna agree with every review of every album. |
