Trying to learn some Queen songs on guitar, and would love tabs. any one know any good sites? |

I almost always get my tabs from Ultimate-Guitar.com But not all Queen songs have good transcriptions on the net. For playing Queen on my guitar I take out the Complete Works book which has all the chords to every Queen song up til the Miracle. And all pretty accurate. |

I suggest playing simpler music and developing your ear. Brian's solos and style should be tackled well into your musical journey, not near the beginning. The notes are one thing, but the style is a completely different beast. Until you can transcribe Page and Gilmour by ear, don't even bother with Brian May. It may not sound nearly as complicated, but it is. Far more, in fact. The complexity of Brian's playing is clearly evidenced by the lack of accurate tabs available for the songs that aren't lifted from books (i.e. album tracks). I looked at a few of the songs on the link above, and they were just dreadful. You can find a thousands guys who can transcribe Eruption, but not even a handful of people who can transcribe The Millionaire Waltz or It's Late. As a professional musician, I have met very few guitarists who could play any of Brian's solos even relatively well. All I can suggest is to listen to Brian's solos a thousand times to get a sense of the feeling he's playing with. The notes are just the first of countless steps to figuring him out. Good luck. |

Yeah - I personally wouldn't dream of trying to learn Queen from tabs, but then I cannot read them at all. |

Tabs are just a road map, as the numbers represent the fret you're playing on. While they can be initially helpful in that regard, they indicate nothing about how to play the notes properly once you're on them. |

Not Tab but a lot better IMO. Videos that shows 'how to' for a lot of Queen songs.....AND Millionaire Waltz has been fully transcribed.....The earlier ones are lower quality film but.....they sure do speed up trying to learn from Tabs that are ,on the whole, not fully correct or in typical BM fingerings/positions etc. Go to YouTube and search for basix4 |

Yeah. I've always preferred to just learn stuff by ear. I usually find that if something is too involved to learn without slowing the recording down, it's more effort than it is worth anyway. Who wants to put that kind of energy into someone else's music? ... well plenty of people, but I guess that's down to the individual. |

What a condescending load of crap. Yeah, the complexity of It's Late is way beyond the comprehension of all but a select few genius guitarists. LMAO! Which part is baffling - the elementary riff or the Right Hand Tapping 101 solo? I suggest playing whatever the hell you want. So you can't immediately pull off every nuance of Brian's style. That doesn't mean you won't learn something and progress as a player. He didn't say he wanted to become a Brain May clone. And who said the original poster is at the beginning of his "musical journey"? Maybe he's the new guitarist for WWRY the Musical and needs to learn this stuff pronto! |

Where are the hundred guys on youtube who can play the Keep Yourself Alive and Killer Queen solos? Right beside the 7-year-olds who can play Stairway To Heaven? Have you ever seen a bar band playing a Queen tune, or even a Queen tribute band? Most of those guitarists don't even get remotely close to the style or tone demanded by the songs, with or without the gear. I once saw a Queen tribute and the guy went the express route, plugging a Les Paul into a Marshall stack. He was nowhere near the warmth of May's sound. He had the notes right, but everything else was wrong. Yeah, the complexity of It's Late is way beyond the comprehension of all but a select few genius guitarists. LMAO! Which part is baffling - the elementary riff or the Right Hand Tapping 101 solo?Tapping and bending at the same time while getting all the nuances right is no easy feat. Even Eddie Van Halen said he can't do it. It's actually a great story, as Brian and Eddie watched each other tapping and said they couldn't even fathom each other's styles. And who said the original poster is at the beginning of his "musical journey"? Maybe he's the new guitarist for WWRY the Musical and needs to learn this stuff pronto! No professional musician seeks tabs, unless it's something excruciatingly complicated. At that level, one should have a good enough ear to figure out 99% of the music thrown their way - including virtually anything in the realm of popular music. And if you're going to play a theatre gig, they provide you with charts. Geez, I didn't realize someone would react so harshly to someone else's opinion. I was just trying to give a backhanded compliment to a guitarist whose style is not easily imitated. |

I don't know which one of you to side with now! Haha. I dunno .... once you get to know Queen guitar material intimately, you realise that it's not inherently complex ... but it's the way that he played it which made the stuff unique. Bob has a good point; if Queen is so easy to play, where the hell are all the GOOD covers?? I used to like my own but listening back to them now it's clear that I didn't have my head in the right place. There is an essential style in Brian's playing that can't really be translated into tabs (or if it has, it must have passed most guitarists by ...) I won't get into the debate of whether or not he still "has it" but there you go. |
