A couple of notes on the Queen show in Dublin, 1979. Fred was in red trousers, not black as John Brogan has mentioned above. Small point but there you go. And when it came time for the audience to sing along to Danny Boy, almost no one knew the words of the second verse - I remember one chap shouting out to Freddie that he was doing a grand job all by himself. I saw them sixteen times in all and that show, the first, has a very special place in my memory. On the subject of bootlegs from that show, a chap in Aungier Street in Dublin used to have just about every show ever played in Dublin by anyone worth taping. I got a really bad and incomplete (C60) copy of the Queen show from him just as a record of having been there - his voice could be heard just before the start of the show, discussing bootlegging. The tape is somewhere in a box in my house and should I come across it, I'll let you know.
It looks like a recording of this show exists:-) Given the fact that so few recordings of this tour exist it would be wonderful to be able to hear that one(even bad quality:-), the first of the tour with Danny Boy! in the setlist.
It was written by a certain Paul. (a friend told me a person called Paul Apple(probably not this person) had Manchester listed about 25years ago:-) so maybe a recording of that one exists too). from all tours this is one of my absolute favourites so I'm really hoping to find more.
Now, isn't there a way we can get in touch with the person who wrote this to try and get this tape so we can make a nice transfer and spread it around?
Maybe Scully has more information?
Let's work together:-)
2009 is the year of new tapes. would be great to add some more to the list!
I have contacted that guy and told him I'd love to hear that recording and that's it, noprogress since then. If I ever get something from him, I will tell you :-)
There is little doubt at this stage that Dublin 1979 was recorded independently. It was broadcast in part on Radio Dublin link a few nights after the show. I spoke to a guy at the 2005 show in Dublin who confirmed at least N.I.H was played on the radio.
It is a shame that so much of the Irish dates are not well covered and easily available. Poor mono recordings and transfers seem to be the order of the day. Even the Slane video should be in better quality, but never will be.
Some guy well into his 50's recorded all of Dublin 2005 on video, I should know I watched him do it. But it will never see the light of day, same as any decent copy of an Irish gig.
As for getting more information from older Irish Queen fans.
Not many of them frequent the internet, and don't seem to trust those that do, so I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.
You might have more luck if you go to the annual convention though...
I once heard '39 from this radio recording, and they simply played the Live Killers version. I don't know if they did that for all the songs, but that's all I can contribute for now...
That is interesting Bob.
Can I ask if there was any part of the clip that made you certain it was Dublin '79? Chatter by Fred etc.
I was given a sample of NIH years ago, and lost it when my p.c at the time died. The person who gave it to me said it was from the broadcast too. The quality was horrific, but that was due to Radio static.
There was no way I could positively say it was from Dublin, or if somebody was just having some fun.
What was the quality on your sample like?
I'm told copies were sold around Dublin at the time, and not ones from the broadcast.

Nope, it was just '39 from Live Killers. The quality was average... but of course it could have been from any radio broadcast, not necessarily the one that someone purported it was from..
