Since its a very point-gnat song, i was wondering if anyone knew any insides about, what Freddie thought about it.
In a way it was Brian's gift to Freddie considering the situation at the time.If i remember correctly lyrically its a collaboration of those two.
But i want to know more about what Freddie particularly thought about THIS one masterpiece.
At the risk of sounding morbid, I don't think Freddie was in any condition to comment publicly about the song when the album or single came out. All we'd have is what Brian, Roger or John had to say in retrospect, or maybe David Richards.
When and if Queen: Greatest Video Hits III is ever released with this song, we might get some insight from Brian and Roger's commentary.
Or you could email Brian's website and see if he posts a reply in the Letters section.
My thoughts are that the theatricality of the song probably appealed to Freddie (both in lyrical metaphor and the grandiose production), but whether he viewed it on a more personal level, I don't know. I do notice that listeners who are touched by a song tend to romanticise the performer feeling the same way ("He sings with such passion, he must have LOVED this song!"). Remember that Freddie was a professional and a showman. He knew how to give the audience what they wanted, how to hit the right emotional balance in his vocals when he sang. I imagine Freddie understood what the song needed, vocally, and was able to give it his all, even if he wasn't emotionally invested in it.
I'm pretty sure Freddie took it by the horns (as per usual).
As Brian has relayed it, the song touched on a subject matter that was clearly off-limits for the band to even bring up, but he had a very 'yes' attitude about the song and gave it a good hard going over.
I don't know about any source which could provide an information about Freddie's attitude to the song. But I remember Brian saying that at that times Freddie just wanted to sing whatever they could write for him. He asked them to write as much as they could. He just desperatly wanted to sing. My personal feeling is that he liked the song. He sang it so incredibly emotional... and just beautiful. You heard it. He poured his heart into the song. It's impossible to sing that well with indifference to it.
yea, it's amazing that the song wasn't a huge hit. It should be right up there with bo rhap, rock you/ champions in popularity. A shame, it's truly one of the best songs of all time.
It's also worth nothing that some of it was pure Freddie input. I won't say 'ad-libs' because I'm not sure of the nature of the thing, but I remember clearly reading that the 'face it with a grin' thing was more or less Freddie making stuff up.
I remember that too, about the "face it with a grin" verse, coming from Freddie. I wonder if anything else was his in that song.I also remember reading somewhere that the chord sequence(played by the keyboards) that the song starts and evolves, comes from Roger and John! But i am not sure...
