From a letter at brian's soapbox, I highlighed the interesting stuff: "Eva González wrote: Dear Dr Brian, First of all I wanted to say something about the animal abuse-violence situation: I am a girl from Barcelona and in Spain, specially in other cities there is a folkloric tradition related with bulls, the bullfighting, they make a show with these animals, which are tired and aching and at the end they kill them… This is also another horrible way to mistreat and KILL these animals, and the worst thing is that they consider this practice as a great tradition! There are many people who go to see this barbarism, I know that many people from Spain would think that I mustn’t accuse the “traditions” and all this staff, but I think that it’s a shame and an ancient practice that should be abolished! On top of that, there are many people who like it and it seems it’s impossible to abolish… obviously they are people with no sensibility, education and respect at all… And of course in this country there is also the haunting of beautiful animals, some of them in danger of extinction... it’s so sad and disgusting… I also despise this people. The only hope is that in Spain there is a political party against that practice. Well, the other thing I wanted to comment is that I listened one of your collaborations with Jimmy Gnecco in 2004 for the film Spiderman 2, “Someone to die for”. I haven’t heard it before and I just feel this song so beautiful, your guitar is crying really, expressing all… I mean it’s great, and I have felt this in many of your songs… this feeling, it's so special. So, thank you for make me feel that! By the way, I am looking forward to see this new DVD of Hammersmith, 79. Really, there is a lot of stuff of your shows during the 70’s that are really great and it’s lovely to recover it! With that and finally there is a question I would like to ask: do you know if the Earls Court live, 1977 is currently available or if it was edited in the past? Well, sorry for bother you, I wanted to share with you these questions. And thanks for all the work you’re doing to protect animals, there should be more people like you… I love you! Yours deeply, Eva --- What a great letter, Eva ... thanks so much. I agree totally with you. What can we do ? Not give up ! The live Earl's Court show is on our list, I think ... to restore and issue. I seem to remember there are technical issues to solve. Lots of love and thanks. Bri xxx" |

Hammy '79 is probably a typo that no one caught. Last I'd heard, Hammy '75 is the one going to DVD. As to Earl's Court, I believe the only thing really wrong with the master is Freddie's mic cutting out at a few points. Keep in mind, all we've heard is the video feed--maybe the raw soundboard mix still has enough of a vocal track to recover it? |

Too bad EC is one Queen's worst filmed concerts. Not in terms of music, but in terms of camera work. |

If they have the multitracks for the audio, they wouldn't need to do such an extensive (and potentially experimental) restoration on Freddie's vocal - UNLESS the microphone dropouts are also on the multitracks themselves too (anything can occur to make that happen, such as bad cabling or slightly faulty mixing equipment, etc. - I know this from experience with my band's concerts, especially in cases where we handled the sound mix productions ourselves versus other in-house mixers). |

Couldn't they fix the small glitches like they did on the MK'82 gig? Freddie's voice cracked during Fat Bottomed Girls and they "fixed" it in the studio. |

they recorded the both nights of the earls court gigs... so, of course they can edit out a really great concert from both nights, both in audio and video, maybe not the quality of the video, but the quality of the shots... im sure it will be great... i believe the common bootleg is from the first night, well, I dont think that the mic will have failed at the same point both nights... |

victor fleitas wrote: I dont think that the mic will have failed at the same point both nights... The mic didn't necessarily fail. It could have been only the feed that went to the video that failed at those moments. The video feed and the multi-track audio were recorded separately if they had any intention of recording the concert properly for posterity. |

I think everyone is missing the obvious fact that the visuals are the main problem with EC77. Unless QPL have the master tapes from all the camera angles and can re-edit the show, then we will be stuck with the current "known" version complete with cameras focused on Brian for most of White Queen... :( |

What we DO NOT want is a splicing together of material from different nights. Re-visit the bootleg audio or video of this and the *issues* are there. How much would THEY influence your decision whether to purchase if they released it "as is" as opposed to material spliced in from another date? Is anyone even the slightest bit bothered about not being able to hear Freddie sing for a few seconds here and there at the beginning of the show? After all, aren't we already well into shaddow drumming, air guitaring or singing at the tops of our voices which masks the problem? |

Great news! I'd love to watch both concerts - Hammy 75 and Earls Court 77 - in great audio quality and pristine footage - they did a great job restoring the image and the sound for the Rock Montreal release. I don't mind the fumbles. For all I know, there are usually so few. Being able to listen to it in wonderful DTS sound and watching it with beautiful high-definition image is more than what I could ever wish for - in short, just like they did it with the Rock Montreal Blue-Ray. The sound and the image got so much better than the previous releases. They can even make it a double dvd release - Earls 77 on one disc, Hammy 75 on another with the extras and the comments and the interviews!!! |

Ordinary, good old, bog standard stereo will do me just fine. |

Come ON QP ..... aim for something at least a little like the Led Zeppelin set, if a full 70's show is out of the question. Having Queen's best available live 70's stuff on DVD, I tell you .. it'd take a front seat on my DVD shelf, put it that way. |

Brian should rename his box 'Brians Shit Box' ie. lets tell the plebs something that will keep them interested for the next 6 worthless months of their lives until we release greatest hits again (called megahits this time!) |

That's like a review of a Spinal tap album -- 'Shit Sandwich' -- Brians' Shit Box. I like it, |

Totally agree with what others have said, it's v badly filmed and if no other versions exist then it should remain condemned to Queen's video vaults. Also, old father time is catching up with some of the 70s concerts. As each year passes the more dated and more naf some of them look. (same with the 80s!) Like everything else, they only have a certain 'shelf date'. Old fans like me who were around in the 70s and 80s are not getting any younger! They had and missed their chance with 'DVD boom' in the early 2000s. |

People don't expect 70s concerts to be of the same visual quality as today's shows, any more tha they expect wedding videos or photos from that era to be perfect. They are historical documents, and have sentimental and artistic merit. That's their selling point, not the technical quality. Earl's Court is filmed reasonably well. I'd much rather the camera stayed on Brian for a minute than have the DoRo twins cut from scene to scene every half second. |

KevoM wrote: Totally agree with what others have said, it's v badly filmed and if no other versions exist then it should remain condemned to Queen's video vaults. Why ? I like the "chaotic" way how it's filmed. The recording obviously didn't have a director, but this really feels "live" if you know what I mean. Also, old father time is catching up with some of the 70s concerts. As each year passes the more dated and more naf some of them look. (same with the 80s!) Both in some cases, although some performances were obviously good, it's just the era looks so dated, the lighting, the outfits, TV system (SD 4:3), the camera techniques, filters etc etc all look so dated now. Some of he 80s concerts just about hold up. (for now). All it is is pure nostalgia. QP should be concentrating on newer technologies more, with the music rather than visuals as regards their back catalog stuff. Instead of just 'testing the waters' and dabbling with it, they should have done a lot more with DVDA/SACD and now Blu Ray music. 'Re-masterd' CD single boxsests do not count. |
brians wig 04.09.2009 10:44 |
I agree with KevoFM about how QPL should have pulled their fingers out with DVDA & Blu Ray, but personally i think 70's PAL SD filmed on 2" video tape hasn't been beaten for quality yet. Sure, HD is a nice clear picture and obviously twice the resolution (or more?), but the colours and the interlaced look of 2" videotape is beaiutiful and sorely missed. |

I am running out of life and there is still much unpublished material. What exactly is Queen trying to accomplish by keeping the archives under a lock and key? Release the thing in stereo. it does not have to be in the blue-ray UFO technology format. In the end, I am preaching to the choir... |
