On MSN website, Queen are among Oasis, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Elvis for the Most Overrated Artists Ever. Queen have been a major Rock Band for Many Years, since 1971 and have released 15 studio Albums. They are credited for selling over 300 million albums Worldwide, the best selling UK Single, Best Selling album in the UK and best live performance ever. They are also noted for their unique style from Heavy Metal, to Opera, Ragtime to Funk, Arena Rock to Fantasy Heavy Progressive Rock from Queen II. However the quote to why Queen is so overrated as follows: "Music for People who have no interest in music. They are a novelty act in my eyes.....gimmicky tunes/lyrics. Terrible hair/tash, dreadful clothes.....and they have the best selling LP in Britain ever LOL....The Great British Public, Don't you just love em? link |

People are entitled to their opinions. Record sales and concert attendance speak for themselves. There are artists I think are overrated, but I won't knock them for their success if they worked hard, built up a fan-base and maintain it. Examples of artists I think are overrated (or overblown): U2 (they're decent, but their last few albums have left me cold...Unforgettable Fire...Joshua Tree...R&H...and Achtung, Baby were a stretch of great works, but then I've never been a hardcore fan) Carlos Santana (everyone I talk to seems to think he's some guitar god, but I don't hear it. He's no BM, he's no Mike Oldfield, who I think could plec circles around him) Coldplay (they just sound so vanilla to me...like Oasis years ago, it's en vogue to love Coldplay). The White Strips (I hear a WS song and I get to urge to listen to Zeppelin or Queen or whomever WS chose to sound like on that single. Why do they sound like everyone else? I couldn't name you a WS song if my life depended on it [no, seriously]. Someone has to tell me "What you're hearing is The White Strips, dude.") All this is just my personal opinion. Like whatever you want, or not, it all balances out on the end. |

We Yanks loved Boyzone, Spice Girls and Take 5, and we... oh wait, that was you Brits that ate that shit up! ;) Seriously, I can see where Queen can polarize music fans. If you don't have sense of humor about music, plenty of what Queen presented can be hard to swallow (no pun intended). In the end, all that matters is what you like and not what the majority decides. |

Totally agree about Elvis. His only talent was being a good performer. He wasn't such a great singer, but had a distinctive voice. Come to think of it, he was the perfect white package RCA was looking for to sell black music. Oasis definitely overrated. I'm surprised U2 and Coldplay are not mentioned. I would throw Radiohead there as well, given that they could produced the weirdest souless music but they still get praised for everything they do, and this comes from someone who likes Radiohead. |
i-Fred 26.08.2009 22:24 |
Let me think... the author of the article probably thinks U2 is the best band ever! |

Elvis was, as Neil Peart once described, a divine windchime. He did not create the music or write the songs, but in performing it, he made it something greater than most other performers could. He existed at a time when many artists performed songs written and arranged by other people (professionals songwiters were the norm, were widely used and their songs performed by many different artists). There was a massive increase in the popularity of "black" music at the time, by way of jazz, gospel and blues. Black artists were making hits and mainstream record companies gladly had white artist record those song in an attempt to capitalize. But it wasn't that clear cut. White teens in the fifties often preferred the originals. Elvis grew up in the South and was impued with a love of blues and gospel. He didn't rip off black artists, he simply sang the songs he loved, better than most people, and did what everyone was doing (singing the same songs). As a performer, he was the first great natural showman, and every frontman since (Freddie, Bono, whomever) can thank him for setting the standard. In the fifties, it was par for the course to stand politely at the microphone (or sit on the stool) and sing. Elvis shook his hips and danced around and *that* was shocking and new. His record companies and management made Elvis Presley a commodity and a household name, but he could back up the hype with his ability to sing and peform. I'm not even a big Elvis fan, but he is the King of Rock & Roll for a reason, the same way Michael Jackson is the King of Pop for a reason: timing, talent and good publicity. |

here, you posted the wrong link http://entertainment.uk.msn.com/music/galleries/gallery.aspx?cp-documentid=149349151>1=61501 Anyway, calling The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Queen overrated is one of the most absurd things I have ever heard. I can understand that some people don't like them but what they have written about them proves that there idea of music is probably along the lines of Vanilla Ice. Gosh some people are ridiculous assholes. Oh and Freddie's clothes/tache/hair are fucking awesome. |
whitequeen2 26.08.2009 23:31 |
What ever. We all know that Queen is the very best of the best. Always has been and always will be. Now I've been around awhile to give listen to most of the popular bands that have come into view. With 4-four musical geneniouses I can not listen to any other band. Freddie, John, Brian and Roger simply wrote masterpieces and others pale in comparison. Just my opinion, that's all. |

I cannot think of Qween without touching the cloth of a priest or thinking of other bands like Van Halen or Van Morrisson or Van Der Graff Generator. qwween started the VAn I think (or maybe they were in the BACK of the van smoking heroin and Deacon ahahahahahah[/img] ) Hot Space and Made In Heaven the only Quween albums available in my country because of poor choice. Qweeen over0rarted??? Maybe... Deacon overrated??? Definitely [/img] !!!! SG x |

Every top band is equally over- and under-rated. Queen are no exception. Loads of people overrate certain aspects of Queen, totally ignoring others. For instance, the amount of voices in Bo Rhap, their performance in Live Aid (a good one, but they played a hell of a lot better many, many times), certain songs... and there are plenty of stepfords who think every little thing they did was utterly perfect and they could do no wrong. It's the same for Beatles fans, Stones fans, etc. |

Like whatever you want, or not, it all balances out on the end. Oasis are the biggest overrated band ever. Essentially a glorified Beatles tribute Band. U2 on the other hand are a world class act - totally shit on Oasis. I base this on having seen them both in concert at the Millenium Stadium. Oasis gig was really flat from the start. Thed best song in my opinion played was I Am The Walrus as part of the encore!!! This is a Beatles song as you know. Apart form Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger which were good - they seemed like a band living on past glories - no longer a stadium band and not really exciting at all. I was very disappointed with Oasis and thought that Kasabien were much better. Will not go to any more Oasis gigs or buy anymore of their records. U2 on the other hand were totally awesome - a brilliant act with stunning sound, brilliant video graphics and Bono voice was just awesome. I was not a fanatic of U2 until I saw their show!!! These guys are very modest, celts and real rock starts as they say. Was blown away by the show and is the greatest show I have ever witnessed at the Millenium. Definitely in my top 5 of greatest live acts ever. U2 not overrated in terms of live shows at all - just brilliant. I am now a big fan of U2! Early albums up to Achtung Baby are great - love Rattle And Hum. Pop and Zooroopa not their best but like their last 3 albums. Coldplay - musically gifted but boring. |

I had a different impression attending concerts by Oasis and U2. I saw Oasis in 2000 in Mexico City and it was a so-so gig but when I saw them again last year here in Monterrey, it was a much better experience. The band played great and the place was packed with fans who sang every song. Great show! They have some GREAT tunes, man, they really do. I have all their albums, except the last one. They are not entirely original and I understand how a Queen fan could find them boring (less than 150 voices in the chorus? no guitar orchestra?? NO TIGHTS??!) but they are a good rock band. Not as good as they claimed to be, but very good. U2's show in Monterrey was good but it was in a Stadium and the audience was mixed, nobody knew all the songs, etc. A bit of a letdown for me. I agree with you: They are true rock stars and they have many great songs but they don't have many rockers and I get bored with Bono's voice after a while. I have 7 or 8 albums of theirs but my favourite will always be "Achtung Baby". Coldplay? A few good songs but to me they seem like a soul-less, watered down version of U2. Very overrated in my books. I even prefer The Killers to them. |

So thank you Rhyeking. I'm just stating my opinion. I know people who think the sun shines out of Bono's hindquarters. Every band will have its hardcore fans and its detractors. One man's art is another man's scrawl. I learned long ago to not try "to get people into Queen.' You can't force what you like on other people. You can expose them to it if they don't know the music, but you can't expect them to like it. I've had U2 fans insist that I *have* to like U2 because they're great rock stars, talented, write catchy music and put on a great show. They say that if I only listen to them more, I'll love the music. I tell them I like *some* U2 (that aforementioned stretch of TUF...TJT...R&H...AB albums) but I'd probably never pay to see them live. They don't move me as a band, not the way Queen does. They're startled that I'll go see Nick Cave And Bad Seeds or Rush before I'll see U2. I can't explain it, there it is. I'd also love to see Alice Cooper live someday. The theatrics are supposedly top-notch. What *does* bother me is Bono's self-appointment as the world's conscience about political issues, like third-world debt. I'm caught somewhere between supporting artists making political statements and wanting artists to get out of my face about it sometimes. What really irks me about Bono is how I can't escape his activism. It doesn't make me want to support him or make me even care about what his issues are. It makes me want him to get out of my life. I'm like this about all celebrity news. I don't care about Britney Spears' personal woes, I don't care about Paris Hilton, I don't care which celebrity married which other celebrity or what they wore to the wedding or to the Oscars or where they vacation! Celebrities only have as much power over us as we give them. I choose to ignore them. I can get through life without them. If you're a musician, I might listen to your music. If you're an actor, I might go see your movie (I only go see movies which interest me, not because a particular actor or director is attached to it...crazy, I know!). If you're a novelist, I might read your book. High-profile people (call them stars or celebrities or whatever) can't expect everyone to care about the things which are unrelated to the craft which made them famous. You can inform the world about the injustices, atrocities and man's inhumanity to man that you see, but you can't force them to care! I want to slap Bono sometimes and tell him that, "you're right, this is an issue, but I don't really care." Maybe that makes me a bad person and Saint Bono will laugh from Heaven when I burn in Hell, but I seriously doubt it. |

Anyone who calls this film overrated as absolutely no understanding history, politics and storytelling, not to mention art. There are thousands of great, important American films. There are likewise many films from other countries which are just as groundbreaking and historically relevant. |

Citizen Kane...an American movie...the greatest, most influential, cinema-altering film EVER MADE. Anyone who calls this film overrated as absolutely no understanding history, politics and storytelling, not to mention art. There are thousands of great, important American films. There are likewise many films from other countries which are just as groundbreaking and historically relevant. Ignorance is the right word. Almost every band in history were influenced by the blues, zeppelin even stole shit from the blues masters. the same with the stones and every other british classic rock band. If freddie mercury didn't come along brian and roger would have been doing the same shit. A poor mans rock blues band. That's why I always tell people freddie was the true innovator of Queen. how many other classic rockers were influenced by noel coward and broadway?...not many. |

Terrible hair/tash, dreadful clothes.....and they have the best selling LP in Britain ever LOL....The Great British Public, Don't you just love em? link (only my opinion :) -)How the hell are Queen overated? Oh real nice, No interest in music wtf? I know its only this yanks opinion but it still gets on my wick!!!!! Lmao Queen are hardly a novelty act their music is amazing and most of their music is actaully really meaningful I mean open your ears! , sure it was glam rock at the start but atleast they wore outragus/Great outfits and pulled them off! & Had TALENT They could actaully sing/play their instuments amazingly!(if thats a word...) :D Its kinda obvious why Queen are the best selling in Britian...THEY HAD PURE TALENT & ROCKED! oh and Freddies tash & hair were AMAZING! LOL at this blokes pure ignorance! Hahaha! |

Queen may be over-rated, but I can't think of a single band more relevant than them consitently throughout a 30 year period. Its pretty cool to drive my Used Audi and listen to the old hits. |

Go soap your own filthy gonads, as I'm sure as hell that no one else is going to do it. |

thinking about this now, Queen might have been a tad overated in the uk, and underated in the states. |
john bodega 23.12.2009 02:26 |
I'd support that statement. It does depend on who you ask, but my general experience among musicians and fans of music is that Queen is seen a bit idealistically as some kind of perfect band that created high art 100% of the time, when they really had as much of a hit/miss ratio as any other band. |

Hmmm....Queen, overrated???! No! Unique and versatile?! Yes! :) Well, this is just my opinion! |

Come to think of it, he was the perfect white package RCA was looking for to sell black music. I know it's been replied too already very well, but being a big Elvis fan too, I HAVE to contribute. "He wasn't such a great singer"... are you insane... some of his performances on certain bootlegs would even give Freddie a run for his money. If you want I could share some fantastic live renditions. Freddie knew that. As for stealing "black" music... how many black stars over the years have credited and thanked Elvis for throwing everything on it's head and bringing "black" music to the masses??? James Brown, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry etc etc What a poorly thought out criticism. You've every right to not like a particular artist, but to "create" facts is very poor. As for U2, Coldplay and Oasis... they had their day.... I wonder if they'll have the same staying power as Queen have had in the future? (Genuine question) |
john bodega 29.12.2009 08:35 |
I think U2's staying power is a proven fact, regardless of the lameness of their last couple of albums .... they are here and have been for decades, so it's really no longer up for debate. It will be interesting to see how people think of Coldplay in twenty years time. If anyone even remembers them. I'd have forgotten about them by now if it weren't for frequent and unpleasant reminders. |

overrated? you are fucking retarded if you think so Queen= by far the best band of all time, no band will ever beat them. |
whitequeen2 30.12.2009 16:24 |
Queen over rated? If anything they are disrespected and not given enough airplay here in the States. We're force fed the Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, and others no where near the stature and talent of Queen. |
qrock 30.12.2009 17:38 |
The guy who did that article was just an idiot. He probably knows nothing of Queen and Is just an ignorant critic making a stupid article. Queen are over rated in the sense of Bo Rhap being the Greatest Song Ever (great song but not the greatest song ever). But Queen are underated in the sense that most people take Queen by the only 5 hits they know and don't know how influential, versitile, unique, iconic, creative and talented musicians, songwriters and entertainers they were and had one of the most inspiring and stunning rock careers ever. They are great musicians, there are no barriers in rock music, they are full of ideas, tried things that other bands had not done before, were very popular, stunned people, had a great catalouge of hits and did everything you could ask of a rock band. No Band has had quite the same depth and talent as Queen which stuns many people with awe. I Know that the younger generation think Queen are rubbish, that ticks me off as it shows that many people don't know what their talking about and there is such a wide range of music out there that is beyond and far greater than the contemporary music of today. |
Ziggy_SD 30.12.2009 19:15 |
Personally, I think those who consider Queen overrated are those who take music in general a little too seriously in the first place. Because of the band's tendency to be diverse their and massive catalogue of 'novelty' songs (Bohemian Rhapsody, Rock You, Champions, Dust, etc.), said people could never view them as a 'serious' band with 'serious' music. Additionally, Queen cop a lot of undeserved slack from certain people because of their enormous popularity, which they feel shouldn't go hand-in-hand with 'silly' hits like Bicycle Race or The Miracle. |

I guess we have a completely different perspective here in England: they are played a lot, VH1 has queen days, every Christmas party, hen night or disco has don't stop me now as the playlist. They really are, as Brian (or was it Roger?) once said, part of the furniture. |

They're played here in Canada with some regularity on my small city's local stations and on satellite, but not with any depth. It's the same six or so songs, and 'Don't Stop Me Now' isn't one of them. It's Bo Rhap, Rock You/Champions, Another One Bites the Dust , You're My Best Friend and Somebody to Love. Very rarely on satellite I'll get Fat Bottomed Girls, Tie Your Mother Down or I Want to Break Free. And that's about it. |

This thread is turning to nonsense, fast. Whether they are overrated or underrated is purely a perception and is based on where you are, and what demographic of people you are quizzing. On this page of the thread alone they are being at once overrated and underrated, if you want to look at it that way. |

I wont lose any sleep over this, music is all down to personal taste but when the great bands of the last 40years are talked about.Queen will be right up there and their record sales ,classic concerts will make sure that they will go down in history as one of the very best.[/img] |

This is inspite of rediculous articles trying to persuade us otherwise. I'm not worried either. |

Clearly this was a test. It's a trick question- Queen IS one of the most over-rated artits ever. Artits... Artits.. Artits... ArTITS... Tits. Yeah, in that category, Fred's bust just doesn't measure up. |
