No you can't beat Queen in their early years from 1973 - 1976 though they were not Bad in the 80s and The Miracle is a brilliant Album. But 80s Pop and Funk does not Live up to the Majesty of Queen in the Early 70s.
That is how I feel too. After the Game they declined, and rose up again at the Miracle, with Innuendo and Made in Heaven being their best later albums. But they did really steer away from the classic rock that they were so well known for, which was a real shame, as that is my favourite era for them
There is no contest. Their work from Queen I to The Game is almost flawless. It defined them.
After that period, they simply became imitators, lazy & complacent. They lost most of their imagination and drive.
They released music that was on the most part boring and down right embarrassing. It ended up tarnishing their legacy forever. It wasn't until Innuendo CD that they finally found themselves again, but by that time it was too little too late.

I prefer the 80's....is that just me?
yes it is Just you!...Queen 1 to the game was the classic Queen era, but don't feel bad, the 80's had it's moments, and not nearly as bad as people on Queenzone makes it out to be.
I love both...most of their early rock was amazing & unique & really creative & most of the 80's stuff had great riffs & great lyrics but actually almost all of their songs have awesome/meaniful lyrics Their hair & stage costumes (minus Brian's hair that he kept!) was better in the early days! But atleast Freddie grew that tash to make up for it! :D
So I ask why choose/Vs? Why Not have a mixture of both!? :)
70's but still some good metal in the 80s but less of it, Hammer to Fall, Tear It Up, One Vison Princes of the Universe. I hate the pop stuff like Hot Space and stuff of AKOM, Miracle, MIH but I guess that why they have a wide fan base, Metal is a broad church today it ranges from Slayer to Linkin Park who arent metal at all with all the techno shit they play with metal riffs. Queen are a classic rock band but much of their 80's and 90's stuff is pop pap.
I'm in absolute agreement that Queen's classic period is Queen I - A Day At The Races. I do overall like the 80's material (compared to other acts of the day it was superior); However, it doesn't hold a candle to their early period. They truly came back to form w/ the Innuendo album.
'70s Queen music had an edge to it. These songs have a "raw" feel to them and this feeling progessively reduces with every album even within the 70s. And this feeling vanishes from the albums of '80s and beyond, and the songs sound very polished. I think this could be because in the early days they were trying many new things where as in the 80s we see practically nothing innovative or ground-breaking in their music.
Even songs like Hammer To Fall have a "pop" feel to them, in comparison to the hard stuff of the 70s which are so powerful. I dunno, maybe the use of synthesizers was responsible for this?
