I hate lists such as these, because, inevitably, I'll leave something out. And, how does one define masterpiece? Really? Still, I will give it a go, here, on a personal level. Bo Rhap(there are many Queen songs which are favorite songs--there IS a reason I am a Queen fan, but, so many are a close second to Bo Rhap, I decided to leave them off) Baba O'Riley(almost up there with old Bo Rhap, for me) Dream On Hotel California(atmospheric to the max, man) Hell's Bells Freebird Don't Look Back Renegade The Chain(more atmospheric stuff for me) Hallelujah Gimmee Shelter The Load Out/Stay What's Goin' On Everyday People Blue Eyes Cryin' In The Rain Crap...already, I've forgotten Hey Jude and Imagine. How could I?? |

While I agree that some of their stuff is very pop-oriented IMO tracks like the ones I named are well-written tracks which happen to have a dance beat. Left To My Own Devices features a full orchestra and was worked on for months - so what if it doesn't rock? Stuff by Beethoven doesn't "rock" - but most people would consider that classics too... |

Pim Derks queried: Stuff by Beethoven doesn't "rock" - but most people would consider that classics too... You're missing the point. Beethoven is not gay... although he may have been. Mendelsohn on the otherhand is gay gay gay. Again, it's not about homosexuality (even though your boys are way way way), it's about it being gay. It is hard to put into words. Just trust me. Listening, attending a concert, or having The Pet Shop boys in your collection is gay. And that disqualifies them from the "Masterpieces" title. There is help, though. And we're here to support you through this life-change. |

Camel - Mirage Chicago - II Max Webster - A Million Vacations Richard Wright - Wet Dream As much as I realize these things all come down to taste, I recommend these 4 records to anyone who like anything remotely rock-related. Max Webster, in particular, are Canada's so-called best kept secret. They only did five records, but they were like a more accessible version of Frank Zappa - great songs with all the musicianship and quirkiness. They and Be Bop Deluxe are the two most underrated rock bands ever in my books. The Richard Wright album simply makes you realize how much of the Floyd sound was his doing. It's a horrible shame that this record fell through the cracks. |

My Merriam Webster's dictionary defines "masterpiece" firstly as "a work done with extraordinary skill; esp : a supreme intellectual or artistic achievement." Per that definition, the only Queen track I consider to be a masterpiece is "Bohemian Rhapsody." Queen has a lot of great songs, many with superb vocals and guitar arrangements, but the bar for a "masterpiece" should be set pretty darn high. |

I've got god knows how many masterpieces on my spotify playlist but my absolute favourites are: Sail Away Sweet Sister Sleeping on the Sidewalk Who Needs You It's Late Ogre Battle The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke Nevermore Tenement Funster Flick of The Wrist Lily of The Valley Stone Cold Crazy Misfire Bring Back That Leroy Brown Liar Doin all right The classics (Bo Rhap, rock you, champions, etc.) are also really great but they get old when you're a new fan and they're all you listen to. There are plenty of hidden gems out there in the earlier albums and I tend to prefer live versions of most songs (except ogre battle and Bring Back that Leroy Brown). Also on the "hidden gems" the band just sound like they're having fun whilst playing. That feeling just makes you happy. |

If you want to hear some real masterpieces, you should listen to classical music; multi-instrumental, multi-layered, long solo's, harmonies, variations, songs that last for 10 minutes or more.... |
