From all of the Queen live shows i have seen this is the only one that they have playback does anyone know why the didnt play live?
the vocal improvisation was live so the reason was not that Freddie had voice problems and looked to be on top form.
Both 1985 and 1986 was playback so there must have been another reason they did not play live.
Yes, the band used playback at both the Montreux Golden Rose Pop Festival in 1984 and 1986. I believe it was sort of a requirement for bands to use playback at the festival. If you noticed, Freddie Mercury expressed some disgust with the perfomance style and was very tongue in cheek when it came to faking his vocals. I think he wanted the audience to know that he knew that they knew the band was faking the performance. The audience didn't seem to mind either, I think they were just happy to see Queen in the flesh!
Weren't those about the only time they used playback? its on some Queen dvd, i can't remember which one (possibly Greatest Video Hits 2), but it says they weren't happy about it but had to use it. Maybe it was something to do with it being on tv or something?

It was a simple question - no worries. Ignore Penetration Guru - it's her time of month...
They had play-back on at the San Remo festival in Italy in 1984 too. Again, Freddie made no secret of it. He used the mic like a prop for his on-stagfe antics and a lot of times it was as far away from his lips a possible.
