This is amazing Anthony, thank you! Last year we got the Holy Grail of Queen collecting - a copy of the multitrack masters of Bo Rhap. Now we get the Ark Of The Covenent - after 25 years, a South African tour concert and in amazing quality and clarity. No one seems to have publically asked any pertinant questions about the recording, so I'm going to! 1) Where on earth did you find it? 2) What format is the recording in? ie, did you just find a "done live" stereo mix or do the multitrack masters exist? I ask because you say you's hope QPL would release it officially, but there is no way on earth that Queen would release a live recording from a stereo source as there is no way of doing any over-dubs for a start! 3) Someone has asked you to upload the last four remaining tracks. Is this gig only an hour long then? Anybody got any other questions? Cheers Anthony. I think you have just been elevated to "god" status! |

Thank you very much for sharing this outstanding recording! It gives me in some way a new perspective on Queen's live work. This rough mix is very interesting and powerfull. I noticed details, like the pointed delay (?) effects on Freddies voice or Brians guitar, that are normaly not so audible. It's a pity that the complete Budapest 1986 soundboard recording has so much hiss. This Sun City recording is much, much better. Interesting and great! One question, apart from the music. Out of a ethical point of view. Was it really a mixed audience in Sun City, like Brian mentioned sometime? |

So at last one of the biggest mysterys as to how the sun city leg of the tour would have sounded is solved. Have to admit this is one of my Works tour shows, loved the piano section after somebody to love. Also Freddie does sound pretty good for 1984, seems a bit more bold then he was often in the early works tour...which always makes interesting shows Freddie's voice actually reminds me alot of the first rock in rio show now I think about it. Cheers! |

Wow , I thought i would share this with you all . And Thank You for all your comments Hi dear Anthony ! Damn, the recording is really excellent. The show in itself is a standard show, I mean as it is the end of the tour we have already heard that music played live before, but there are some small new interesting things here and there (as already said, for instance, the transition from Somebody To Love to Killer Queen with a jam and a bit of My Fairy King is a delight !). The band is in great shape, Freddie's voice is much better than it was at the start of their South African venture (as the story says), and the other members are enjoying their concert as much as the audience. Freddie is in form, Brian May too, and Roger and John have always been excellent in the rythmic section. Except the few false notes, Brian before the solo in Killer Queen (which is very a surprise for me, I always thought he would play this one all his life without ever missing a note !) and Freddie at the piano during the intro of Seven Seas Of Rhye, this is just an excellent performance as (almost) always. As far as the recording, I'm used to hear audience recordings, as there aren't that many soundboards exist for Queen, not as sme other bands (mainly the FM broadcasts and things like that, they were very protective of their recordings ! ), and some of these audience tapes have too much audience noise. Here I think we have the complete contrary, the audience is not heard that much (in fact only from the stage mikes I think), so it misses this part of the mood of a concert. But we have the great opportunity to hear each instrument in a full clear sound, which is very interesting of course ! The few false notes also contribute to the fact that we know we hear a real band on a real stage, without any overdubs, the real thing as if you were in the hall, in the middle of the crowd but you're alone, with your headphones on, connected to the soundboard... Can you see Freddie waving his arm down during "Hammer To Fall" ? or scatting for the intro of "It's A Hard Life", just before he takes control of the audience once again ? I would be curious to know how many people were in the audience on this night and during the other nights, it was probably at full capacity anyway (imagine, Queen playnig in South Africa ?). This is a very instructive recording, and a very nice experience, I won't say it is the only recording to give me the thrill, as I much prefer Queen in the 70's. But that would easily be in the top 10 recordings I think. Have they played their acoustic set in South Africa ? Is This The World We Created and Love Of My Life should be really interesting to hear ! Why that soundboard has been liberated ? I think the band came to play in another country, another continent, maybe they didn't knew the promoters as much as the European or American ones, they could not force them to have much more control around the stage and recording equipment, I don't know; can anybody tell me what other similar Queen soundboard (else than a radio or video broadcast) exist ? Except a very few ones maybe (Ken Testi's tape for instance), I don't think there are that many soundboard recordings. In South Africa we were lucky the technicians were much more relaxed with that control on the recordings, and most probably the recordings of the other nights exist (why doing that for one show when theu could have done that for the other nights too ?). This is also confirmed by Marknow who said he once was offered to buy 5 recordings of Queen in South Africa, but didn't buy them (holy sh.... !!). Well, this is just what I think, it would be very interesting to read more comments about that. I would be really interested too to hear Freddie's goodbye on the last night, really ! As far as the historical content, I'm more than happy that after venturing in South America, they played in South Africa and made some more people happy with music. No political aspect for me, just music as it is, a vehicle for joy and entertainment. And something to help people opening his mind. Two years after there were plans during the Magic Tour to go further into the Eastern European countries if I'm right. God knows what would have become Queen's itinerary in the 90's or at the start of the 2000's, as it is now more common to see bands playing there. Queen in Northern Africa, Vietnam, India ? Who knows... But it is all nothing but good I think. For every Queen fan I think, it is always a ball to have a new proof of Freddie's power and the reign of Queen as a band. They were just on the verge of playing in Rio the following year, the year when they proved they weren't dead, after some lower years. This is a new one, and a real good one. thanks a lot dear Anthony for bringing that one here ! "The more noise you gonna make the better we gonna play !" Ah !! Typical Freddie, always showing he is at ease !!! |

The band said they played to mixed audiences and did a lot of bridge-building, and all we can do is take their word for it. But for anyone outside of South Africa, it was political gold to cut them to shreds for it, regardless of what really happened.
