Hello All Here are a couple of short snipets from the controversial Sun City Gig before they go back into storage for another 24+years. Maybe someday someone (QPL) will let us all enjoy this wonderfull concert From the Greatest Band in the Land |
Marknow 02.06.2009 18:35 |
? Wum alert? Any news on the British and (Mostly)Irish lions? |
Paulos 02.06.2009 18:41 |
Freddie sounding a little like Barry White - i think the taqoe needs speeding up slightly! |
City-in-the-Sun 02.06.2009 18:51 |
Well spotted Paulos you made me smile ,yes its down almost one Semitone in pitch , Some Bands do detune to compansate for Singers who are having a Bad Day lol.... |

City-in-the-Sun wrote: Maybe someday someone (QPL) will let us all enjoy this wonderfull concert From the Greatest Band in the Land Hardly, it's hard to market a concert that provoked and sadly still does provoke so much negativity, even more so considering the state of Fred's voice. If you work hard enough at trading you can aquire these shows, apparently, that's the only way us mere mortals will ever hear or see these types of recordings. Unless Brian has a bad week on Wall St, and hit's the meth, and that is not going to happen anytime soon is it? |

Yeah, do you have Dublin 1979? And why was the previous night at Cork cancelled? I seem to remember it was a bad storm, but that was a long time ago. Oh Yeah, where did you get a soundboard of sun city, and which night is it? Sounds like the First. |

Hello Luke Sometimes in life its hard to no what to do when you have a something that you know everybody would love to here being a musician (Guitarist/Singer),I try to respect the feelings of the band and i myself would maybe not like gigs of myself to be put online without my consent , and i really want to share this experiance and hope that if enough people vote to say yes please release it that would be Fantastic, its so nice to here Raw Recordings that have not been edited etc as this truley reflects the awesome power of any top live band . I personaly love mistakes & the odd swearword if so be, as that is how i remembered the Gig. Wow what can i say i posted the tunes for you here at Queenzone because i enjoy a debate , and was hoping that talking about this concert would encourage us all to reflect on it. Not everyone posts things which are not what they seem and i myself have not or would never mislead anyone for the fortunate few who have listened to this concert will no straight away what i have posted is what i have stated I was there and this recording has come straight from the horses mouth (so to speak) As for the Live Magic comment i think you should maybe listen to it again Many Thanks Anthony. Ps has anyone else ever listened to any of the Sun City Gigs apart from what i have posted for you ?[/img] |

Hello A Word in Your Ear Having never been involved in any form of music sharing or Forums i am just treading lightly so to speak ,having this for so long not being able to share without the strong arm of the law stomping down has allways worried me. i could have sold this hundreds of times easily over the 24+ year period even before File sharing became popular but chose not to . I only degraded the sound so i know it was my bad mix.it was only posted to give you guys a rough idear of what the basic songs where like and not intended out of spite, and hope some comments would come to lite and any more information about these concerts. any suggestions what anyone else would have done in my position . Many Thanks Anthony |
Rick 03.06.2009 11:07 |
Thanks for sharing the snippet. It sure does sound like a SBD. Anyway, why don't you share a snippet in which Freddie makes a reference to Sun City? I'm sure he must have greeted the audience in some original kind of way. That makes it 100% the real deal. |
City-in-the-Sun 03.06.2009 11:53 |
Hello Rick Yes indeed on more than one ocasion,I myself personally would never Post certain names mentioned in the concerts , purely because i beleive that is not in anyones interest at the present.. Are you all aware that Queen had a TV advert running for many years in S Africa advertising a certain entertainment complex using one of there most Greatest songs,so there is huge potential in advertising for a certain Hotel chain, and i am not willing to boost the complexes image as certain people do not agree to the" HUGE concerts and TV payments" ,while 80% of Native people and 10% of the rest were in Poverty, Just a qoute from local newspaper at the time, not mine.. Many Thanks Hope That helps |

Hello City-In-The-Sun.
I'm the resident grammar police here at Queenzone. I see your profile says that you live in England. I must say, you have some of the worst English written language this website has ever seen. How can you live in an English speaking country without having some better understanding of the Language?
It makes it difficult for people to believe what you say when your answers sound like something Gollum (from Lord Of The Rings) would say.
Case in point:
Yes indeed on more than one ocasion,I myself personally would never Post certain names mentioned in the concerts , purely because i beleive that is not in anyones interest at the present..What does that mean? On more than one occasion you haven’t posted a name? Huh? That doesn’t make sense in any language. And someone ASKED you to provide an audio clip but your answer is “that is not in anyones interest at present”. Ummm… he just asked you. I would say that qualifies as an “interest” and it just happened. So yes, it was in the past, but just recently. Another Yoda-ism: Having never been involved in any form of music sharing or Forums i am just treading lightly so to speak ,having this for so long not being able to share without the strong arm of the law stomping down has allways worried me.You’ve NEVER been involved in any form??? Then why are you worried about “the strong arm of the law”? How would you know they even care if you’ve NEVER BEEN INVOLVED? One more: if you lived near to me i would Gladly let you come and listen to the concert in its full glory You would invite someone into your home after one comment posted on an on-line forum? Are you Hannibal Lechter? CONCLUSIONS: 1. City-In-The-Sun is full of it. 2. Education is more important than playing on the internet. 3. A Cheesesteak sandwich sounds really good right now. |

Hello Micrówave Thats a bit harsh do you treat all newcomers on Queenzone like that , if anyone does not understand what i have said then i will gladly explain again , i have been as honest in my answers ,and do not understand why you are Bullying a new member who has put something on the site that should be of interest to people , i am sorry that you are not capable of understanding my written words in the english language , i am trying my best . I do not have to prove anything to anyone on this site or post something which i do not want to,your comments have upset me , we all cannot be great at putting pen to paper .. I have been called a WUM ? i do not understand why, i only posted a short mp3 of queen live at the Sun City Gig. If you do not beleive me thats your problem and i feel sorry for you , i came on this site to mix with queen fans and talk and hopefully meet people and make freinds ,not to be laughed at because my english gramer is not up to your standard.. Many Thanks no hard feelings [/img] |

Wherever this is from, the fact that they played Sun City in 1984 is a disgrace They should be ashamed of themselves! Fred's voice is rough and it serves him damn well right! Pure cashing in (I had forgotten they did that - I wonder how many folks from the townships got tickets?) ...'musical prostitute my dear' - never a truer word spoken |
Rick 04.06.2009 02:50 |
If you took the effort in making a 'compilation snippet', I cannot see why making an even smaller snippet, in which Freddie addresses the audience, seems rocket science to you. |

City-in-the-sun - please give us any proof that this is the real gem. Any. Really any. The best thing would be a 3-second long snippet of Freddie shouting something like "Hello Sun City !" If you post ANY proof, really ANY proof, I'll bet that you'll become the hero and you'll get tons of different offers from people who will offer you both money and a other Queen recordings ! Without any proof these segment can come from any concert |

Hello pittrek Thank you for all your comments good and not so good ones ,i Will do what you all seem to want ,and hope the people who run Queenzone will not mind me posting it on your Fantastic Web Site. I contacted outsideline on the 28-04-09 via email about this Rare Gig and was contacted by somebody called Greg Brooks who told me he was Queen's archivist and I look after the tapes, and take care of enquiries such as yours. so i have tried to do the right thing and would love to see it released and remastered just like all the other Bootlegs and all profits going to the apropriate Charity. I will try and post it in the next few Hours ,and hope that you all understand that having something which Has had special memorys is not allways easy to let go of, and maybe one day i myself can Buy a Legal copy of this Concert Blessed with the Knowledge that Brian,Roger,John, and Freddie wherever he is will understand that all Queen fans will have something that has been denied to them for so long whatever the reason why. Many Thanks Anthony |

Just getting back to a general discussion about the concerts at Sun City. My own personal opinion is they are really nothing special at all. There is nothing in anyway unique about the concerts there at all. Fair enough they caused alot of controversy at the time, and Freds voice was shocking, and he ran off stage the third night crying, but thats about it really. Consider a recording like The Marquee '72 versus all 9(?) Sun City shows. I know which one I would prefer in my collection. I just consider the Sun City shows as a curiosity, because of the scandal behind them. And if I had them, they would be listened to once, and archived on my HD. If I had a recording like the Marquee, I would wear my system out listening to it at full volume. |

This is for all the musicians & audio technicians that love a totally different mix. This is for all the queen fans all over our small and delicate planet This is for all the underprivileged people who did not make it to the concert. This is for all the members & roadcrew of QUEEN who may never have listened to this? Please Treat this Audio with the respect it deserves . I don't think I was bullying you, if anything you should take it as constructive criticism. If I was bullying you, I would have given you a nice verbal insult, taken your lunch money and your Queen tape, and been on my way. I wrote quite a lot JUST FOR YOU!
Be that as it may, I invite you to continue to post and contribute, obviously you DO have something to offer. But again, my intentions are simply to help you and others communicate better here on Queenzone and "raise the level" a bit. We've recently seen quite a dip.
I also wanted to be the first to giggle at
Thank you for your kind words ,i had to finish half a bottle of Jack Daniels and 20 fags to pluck up the courage ...being as I am NOT from England but from Hillbillyland US. That has a completely different meaning down here. |

sounds interesting, even if Freddie's voice is fucked - sounds like he is smoking cigs and singing at same time!!! as for sharing it....the trading community relies on lossless copies. so i can't see what harm it would do for you to upload the whole gig as an mp3 file.. |

Hello Micrówave Thank you for that ,i do understand and can see where i might have gone wrong , lets put all that behind us and lets all talk about the good old times this band has given us all .i am new to all this posting and typing over the internet so if i do anything wrong please let me know. Many Thanks Anthony PS Oldsmobiles & AC30s Rock..... |

Thanks for the share Anthony. I would not worry about any leagl comeback on your part. There must be 200 audio concerts here ready for download, shared by average Joe's like you and I. The whole area of copyright and ownership on unreleased concerts is very grey, and has never led to prosecution anywhere in the world. You should take time to consider releasing this audio in full on the net, and maybe in a lossless format. I would be quite happy to donate a sum to the charity of your choice in return,as would others, i'm sure. If that is something your not willing to do, you should definitely forward a lossless copy to Greg Brooks, if he is interested in it. What other info can you share about your recording? Do you have more than 1 night in Sun City? Can you confirm which night your sample is from, and provide a set list? Would you be willing to let us know how (roughly) you got this? Mark. |

Well, maybe ran off stage crying is a bit over dramatic, left the stage in tears very early in the set after his voice broke would be more accurate. The words "left the stage in tears" were used on a RTE news broadcast on circa 8th Oct 1985. Hers's a quote from queenconcerts.com Freddie lost his voice after Under Pressure (third song!) and the concert had to be cancelled. Also the following two gigs (October 9 and 10) had to be cancelled. |

City-in-the-Sun being a musician (Guitarist/Singer),I try to respect the feelings of the band and i myself would maybe not like gigs of myself to be put online without my consentAs a musician myself, I can definitely understand that. As musicians who aren't world class, guys like you and I wouldn't want anyone to hear our flaws. But no concert recording will ruin Queen's legacy in any way. There are hundreds of concerts already available to download here, so what harm could one more bring? As far as I know, Brian and Roger don't have any problem with unreleased recordings being shared, as long as nobody is making any money. The reason why some people were a bit hostile toward you is because countless people in the past have claimed to have a rare recording, and have given every reason in the book not to share it. I can only hope you will continue with the sharing spirit and upload the rest of the recording for all to enjoy. having something which Has had special memorys is not allways easy to let go of I understand. But you'll still have the memory, my friend. Nobody can ever take that away from you. Sharing a recording will only make your memory of the show more accessible to others. It's gorgeous, stereo sound. Brian's guitar has rarely sounded better. Freddie's voice is in fairly good shape for the era. Thanks for sharing these bits, confirming at long last that a recording does exist. |

City-in-the-Sun wrote: Ps has anyone else ever listened to any of the Sun City Gigs apart from what i have posted for you ?[/img] Some people have 5 concerts on audio from Sun City, if "they" are to be believed. I was offered a 5 pack of cd's at a stall back in 1995 at a summer music festival here in Ireland. The 5 cd's were taped together in plain cd covers with no information, other than Queen Sun City 5 nights. The guy at the stall wanted IR£75 for them, a fortune at the time, and would not allow me to open them for inspection before purchase, so I left them. OOPS! It is a bit weird that some people who are obsessed with Queen and visit here every day for years, have had nothing to add here at all. I hope they are not getting too nervous over another one of "their" gems. |

Hello Sir GH Thank you for your kind words, i have listened to this recording for so long now that you tend to take it for granted just how good the Band were ,yes Brians guitar sound was exceptional and few snipets are just the tip of the iceberg . what i love about these recordings is that you feel you are there right on stage with the guys , johns bass playingwas fantastic as well, such tone and so gentle yet rock solid when needed, ah roger lots of Rotor toms i think.? and some electronic pads going on as well ,i love it when he hits the rims of the tom toms pure power. I was struck down with such emotion when Brian rose from the smoke after machines intro into tear it up i allways go goose bumps when i here those melodic notes of his lead work, I had an origianal set of Burns Trisonics pickups from the mid 60s which i had to sell when i arrived back in the UK being an out of work Muso I had no choice ,was going to place them in My Strat Damm it.LOL. So much to talk about im allways glad to talk about equipment ,Live Pa ,Studios,Guitars,Amps, and Classic Cars V8s and anything unusual.. anymore opinions on the sound of the mix would be apreciated and if lots of people want more its maybe possible just one day at a time . I really would love to here about what sound turns people on as eveybody has different opinions . Through headphones this tape is awesome.. I myself have played at Sun City not in the superbowl , but the Valley of the Waves in crazy Heat.with sand on one side and huge Wave machines crashing down and midnight surfing singing and playing living next door to Alice/shadows/Bad company/Queen etc.(Ahh those where the days) and in our break i would play queen playing the sun city gig and we would all be dancing on the beach in the middle of the night with people surfing in the middle of Africa ...But never once did anyone get my copy Oh No not untill today ,and i am glad.. Now Thats Magic........ Many Thanks Anthony... |

As everyone here I hope we will be able to hear more:-) I'm sure at least some of us will listen to it as many times as you and enjoy it;-) The sound quality is definetely fantastic so I wonder what it would sound like in its full glory. Queen is magic indeed and your recording(s) is/are proof of that. As Sir GH says, the fact that more people will get to hear (and have) this will not change anything about the band's legacy nor will it take away your memories. You'll only share your own feelings with more people, which can be fantastic. Not that I want to put you 'under pressure':-) By the way, I wouldn't be worried about spreading this stuff from a legal point of view either:-) |

Watch out, City-In-The-Sun. I say soak 'em. This audio should be very valuable to the powers-that-be. They don't have it... no matter what Greg Brooks says. They will low-ball you all the way, perhaps even try to convince you to "donate it" for the good of the Queen community. Soak 'em, buddy. Keep your original. |

Nice one guys you do make me Laugh ,im suprised that there are not more comments on this it does feel like a weight of my chest ,i would love for you all to here it but i paid a heavy price for this tape after the concert, its a long story,in 1984 security was very tight as you can imagine but i would pay for a legal copy and a fair price purelly because the mix is just up my street , i really need a pro studio to run it through a high end machine which you can adjust the azimuth ,etc and correct the pitch straight from the source ,last time the tape came out of storage was 11 years ago when i put it to mini disk and that was on a relativly cheap machine, That tape has been held close to my bossom since the day it was recorded travelled far lands and back again so it was nice to get just look at it again, the mini disk done a fair job but it needs some really high end gear to get it up to scratch , so come on QPL Let me into your studio so we can put it donw in its ultimate form and move forward with all this hype about it,i am dying to know how many fans out there have lisened to the concerts before especial the Band , they must have im sure , what do you guys think ? Keep up the posts and comments please as we can put pressure on them a bit im sure .. Long live Soundboard recordings.... and sites and Fans like yourselves We Love em.. Anthony.. |

I wouldn't put all my hopes in QPL about this. After getting your tape, they'll probably put them in a wooden box and store it in a dark underground vault, next to the Ark of the Covenant and the Area 51 alien body. Then they'll release Wembley for the *th time. |

But by bootleg/unofficial recording standards, it's still one of the best. It's not a dry mix... it's very lively and guitar heavy. Most people here would be happy with it as it is. Maybe you can consider uploading it here first and dealing with QPL later... ? |

If QP wants the tape, never give them the master! They'll be find with a copy, and there's a very long list of collectors who gave their rarities to QP, and never heard of them again. |

Holy Shit! Thank you for sharing that snippet City-in-the-Sun. I think I've never been so surprised when reading a topic on queenzone, never in these... dog knows how many years I've been here. Thank you, even hearing that snippet was thrilling. Oh, and take the warnings about Queen Productions seriously, never give them anything for free. These people know what they are talking about. Oh I still miss my original Man in the Shadows-mastertape so much... |

It has been nice to here your comments on this and i will sleep well tonight knowing that at last some people have enjoyed the Board mix ,hats off to the origianal engineers for doing a great Front of house and monitor mix. I also found out this morning that im gona be a Grandad ,OMG maybe things are not so bad in life after all I will think about what you all have said and so dearly want to upload what i have for you all to enjoy. Thank you for all your coments and please keep them coming , iam sure some people have very strong veiws on this concert i do understand why , i was there right in the thick of all the political debate so i can understand why people get upset about this concert ,i try to just concentrate on the Band and the sound and energy they produced on stage ,and boy did queen rock Sun City - they certainly did.. Many Thanks Anthony. |
YourValentine 05.06.2009 17:50 |
I have a strong opinion about Queen playing Sun City but that was 25 years ago and when Nelson Mandela can live with that I can surely forget about that, too. However, I would want to listen to the concert in any case, I am too much a collector to boycott a recording for any reasons :-) |

Anthony - Congrats on being a new grandpa. This masterpiece of yours is really exciting and sounds beautiful. It would be great and extremely generous if you could share this wonderful historic concert (with excellent sound quality too). Years ago, I used to listen to audience recordings of Queen concerts to and from work every day. However, lately I have become bored with Queen and have not listened any Queen concert recordings in at least one year. I think I will listen to Houston 1977 or Chicago 1980 next week while I commute to work, and hallucinate about possibly listening to Queen in Sun City ... some day, one day. Whether or not you decide to share this concert, I am very grateful that you shared your memories and the snippet of this beautiful concert. Thanks Mike Van |

Many people have written great message in this topic. What I'd like to add is that this particular recording has, apart from its historical value, also such amazing soundquality that hearing the entire thing would be nothing short of sensational. It's not a dry mono soundboard recording like there are plenty from Led Zeppelin but a stereo soundboard with a glorious mix. All instruments can be heard clearly without one getting in the way of the other. You've indicated it yourself, the beautiful interplay between Roger and John(for example the intro to Under pressure with every little detail, fantastic) is really awesome. That's something you can't enjoy when listening to many audience recordings. Also, all vocals are beatifully captured with a nice balance between lead and backing vocals. This has been said before but also the guitarsound is gorgeous, the quite long 'I want to break free' -sample is fantastic prove of that, it's as if Brian is playing the guitar just for you. And there's always a great balance. The available space is beatifully used. To my ears this is really an awesome document of this great band:-) When you get to hear all the details you understand even more, as a listener, that they were really something. Congratulations with you grandchild:-) (by the way, I'll soon be uncle Raf:-) |

Well i am very gratefull to hear some clips from this show. I was told fred had a voice like a bag of bolts, but suprisingly not as bad as i thought. The rest of the band sounded like they should at the end of a tour. A well oiled machine. Of course we would all be very, very happy if you shared this concert here, but don't get forced into it. It is entirely up to you if you decide to share, or not. Thank you for posting what you have done. All the best |

I've just had a listen through my Sennheiser studio headphones (they tend to show flaws in the mix better than anything else I have in playback-equipment) and the amount of noise on this is very, very acceptable, and will require relatively minor work to get up to top quality. If it weren't such a political liability, it'd be up to official release quality with a bit of polishing, I'd say. |

This is beyond fabulous. I mean, March of the Black Queen in an improvisation AND My Fairy King?!!! I've died and gone to heaven. It's simply unjust that such a brilliant concert had to be given in Apartheid territory, because apart from that flaw, this is perfect. |

listening to it right now .... couldn't believe what Thomas wrote in the post above .... it sounds amazing !!! the "March Of The Black Queen/ My Fairy King" improvisation is really something ! it's been a long time without feeling so excited and happy when listening to a "new" Queen recording !! Also amazing seeing the review at Bob's site: link Anthony you're our man !!!! |

Hello Anthony, Thanks a LOT for sharing this one. I have listened to it through headphones last night and several times again today. Being a fan for almost 20 years, I somehow lost interest in Queen (after all the post made in heaven crap they released) but listening to this gem made me realise again how much I love this band...Made me very happy and smile all day! Almost the same feeling I had when I heard a new Queen album for the first time in my youth. Thanks so much for being so generous and share it overhere. I know for sure you made a lot of Queen fans very happy! Kind regards, Dennis |

I can't say it better then Dennis althought I share his experience only with "Innuendo" and "Made In Heaven" (the curse of a late birth). You can be sure that it will never ever come to an official release of this recording, because then they have to face the old ghosts again which gave them a bad press back in 1984. I'm sure they would have to explain themselves again and again. By the way, does anybody know when they made it public that they will play Sun City? In my books I found different contents about that fact. regards W. |

Sorry to bust your balls again, Ducksoup, but you made a funnie and don't even know it.
Being a fan for almost 20 years...blah blah blah... Almost the same feeling I had when I heard a new Queen album for the first time in my youth. So this concert made you feel like you just got Innuendo or The Miracle? I thought it was a hell of a lot better than that. |

City-in-the-Sun wrote: i have tried to do the right thing and would love to see it released and remastered just like all the other Bootlegs and all profits going to the apropriate Charity. Just fyi - the other bootlegs they've released were almost all recorded by audience members, sold unofficially for years before Queen took them, didn't remaster them at all and released them...plus they've also infringed the copyright of both Yellowvision & the BBC in doing so. So you'd be better placed to nominate a charity yourself, and upload a lossless version of this once a certain level of donation has been reached. As others have said - an official release of this material would be too politically sensitive, plus they'd probably overdub it all... On the WUM allegations - plenty of people have visited this site and made all sorts of wild claims that turned out to be untrue. Your recording is suitably wild to have tarred you with the same brush initially - well done for being patient and persistent. Thanks for posting the fuller version - can I reasonably objectively suggest that both Sir GH & YourValentine can offer worthwhile advice on the distribution of this material safely. Also, I think I detected a reticence to share your memories - let me reassure you that there would be more interest in the concert than the political context. |
