Thanks a lot. I have re-uploaded the recent version a few times, so it's nice to see a better one (I hope). Just made the links clickable[/img] |

Olivier, is there any chance you could post the ffp's from this version? I already have a version of (supposedly) Not Fade Away so it would be great to double-check. Thanks! |

Sure ! But note I never shared my own silvers (don't know if it changes the ffp's if it comes from another silver or if the files are renamed for example). Here are ffp's for CD1 : 01. I know why it is used for (to compare two files, to cut short), but I don't know that much, so don't create ffp or md5 usually. Is there a kind soul who can explain a little further that thing ? If files are renamed, does it change the md5 files and so on... ? Always good to have some more technical knowledge ! Regards, Olivier, Belgium. |
daffy_the_duck 12.05.2009 16:58 |
Merci beaucoup Olivier! The fact of renaming files don't change the ffp (flac fingerprint) as it is still the same file. Like you; you can change your name to avoid paying taxation e.g. your fingerprint will always be the same. |
Ginger01 12.05.2009 17:14 |
Thanks for this, Olivier! This has got to be better than the one I've had hanging around for years :) |

If files are renamed, does it change the md5 files and so on... ? Always good to have some more technical knowledge ! Sure. MD5 is an algorithm which takes an arbitrary set of data and produces an (almost) unique code to represent that data. It used to be thought that it was impossible for two different sets of data to produce the same code but it was recently proved that it can happen in extremely rare circumstances. However it's good enough for our purposes! For us what it means is that we can take a flac file and create an MD5 checksum for that file. If I share the file with you and give you my MD5 checksum, you can then generate your own checksum and if it matches then you know the file did not get corrupted. You can also use it to identify unknown recordings, which is nice, because two rips of the same CD or rips of two identical CDs *should* generate identical MD5s. Now it gets more complicated with FFP (flac fingerprints). A flac file consists of two parts - the first part is the header and this contains all the metadata about the file - basically info about the file - the second part contains all the audio data. Now whereas an MD5 fingerprint relates to the whole file, the FFP just relates to the audio data. So you could have two completely different files with different file tags but as long as they contain exactly the same audio data they will produce identical FFPs... at least that's the theory! And that's really useful because if I share a file with you and give you the MD5 checksum, if you then go and tag the file with the artist, track name etc, it will then produce a different MD5 but the FFP will stay the same because the audio data didn't change. And after all, that's all we really care about. Anyway - your ffps are different from mine so that means that somebody fiddled with the copy of Not Fade Away that mine came from. Good to know because now I'll download yours and get an exact copy of the silvers. Thanks! |

Thanks Tim and Daffy, useful and clear information... Now I know I can start adding ffp files to all my shares... Now I know what it is used for and why it can be important ! For some concerts we got so many versions circulating that it becomes hard to understand, which one comes from which version, is it a different version from mine, and so on... So now we know that the version shared before was different. And as this was not caused by SBE errors on the silvers being corrected (that would change the ffp, right ?), it means that someone played with the sound somewhere along the line, or grabbed it with 2 seconds gap between tracks and that was corrected later, or changed the track length, or made it lossy, lost some data along the way... Maybe tried to remaster it, should worth a comparison maybe, can sound better, who knows ! Regards, Olivier, Belgium. |

Is Great King Rat the full song or a snippet? |
riccardo 30.05.2009 17:13 |
It's not the full song. It's like the other concert in 1984 (about one minute long). |
