I recently read on the official forums that John Deacon made a full solo album called Man In The Shadows. Is this a joke or something? Or a hoax? Let it rip people...please give me some clarity on this. |

I once had the picture of the cover (think I got from here) but I've never found a clue about it on the net... I second the demand, does anyone know something about it? cheers |

It's a very famous joke |

pittrek wrote: It's a very famous joke That was quite a long while ago....must have been around 2003 when that first appeared. Someone made a fake tracklisting and cover art, and was quite a big joke then, and I'm surprised people still keep asking about to this day if it's real or not! LOL! Who came up with that joke originally? Anyone remember? (This site needs a FAQ that deals with hoaxes, rumours, etc. that originated from Queenzone) |

Has anyone saved the cover sleeve to this "album" |

Who remembers the Fishy Business album on Queen Heaven? :D |
FriedChicken 17.11.2017 10:23 |
I don't remember who came up with Man In The Shadows. But I'm pretty sure it was me who came up with Man in the Shadows. Some great other myths that originated on QZ: - The track 'Brothers in Pain' - Freddie's River of Blood speech - A Queen concert in Urk, the Netherlands in 1983 - A song from The Miracle Sessions called 'Two Worlds Apart' which started during the Barcelona sessions. - Brian's Curse |
Pim Derks 17.11.2017 11:41 |
I wouldn't say Brian's Curse is a myth. |
MercurialFreddie 17.11.2017 13:42 |
Wasn't the track "Brothers in Pain" also called by others "Friends in Pain" ? Can you elaborate on this and also on Freddie's speech ? I still love to give Man in the Shadows a spin, it's a fab album! :) |

Golden Days was already released in 1986 or 1987 by Minako Honda. |

One of the all-time best windups, a Queenzone classic, actually first emerged on Audiogalaxy (a short-lived Napster alternative). For me, Queenzone seems like a distant alternative reality that we all used to live in, a long long time ago. |
Bohardy 18.11.2017 09:00 |
Well, this thread has brought out the old guard! Niek, Pim, pma; Good to see you guys are still lurking here. I'm pretty sure it was you Niek, who created Man In The Shadows. A significant honour. Something to go on your epitaph maybe? And you and Pim were definitely behind Two Worlds Apart, weren't you? 'Twas I who first told others about Freddie's controversial 'rivers of blood' speech that was edited out of all versions of Wembley 86. What was the AudiGalaxy myth pma? |
YourValentine 18.11.2017 16:11 |
Audiogalaxy was not a myth, Steve, it was a group of Queenzoners who shared files in a group there. The group was called "Royal Rareties Request Society" (ahem). I always believed that pma invented the Man In The Shadow album but he always said it was someone from that group. Here is another old "hoax" thread, the links in it are mostly broken link |
pma 18.11.2017 23:54 |
Indeed, someone posted extremely detailed information concerning John Deacon's unreleased solo album, The Man in the Shadows into audiogalaxy. Of course, back then, this whole idea of a joke about a secret solo album by John was was clearly meant to mislead the gullible Queen fans of the internet era, who were preoccupied with questions such as "Was Freddy gay?". Unfortunately, back then this was the nature of the game, and newbies were treated pretty harshly at times. While the idea originated on audiogalaxy, I am willing to give Queenzone credit for enhancing the windup to its fullest possible potential. This is where the magic happened, it was QZ members who created a track list and came up with all sorts of crazy details about the album. |
Bohardy 19.11.2017 19:38 |
Ah, I see, my bad. I read pma's initial post as if he was talking about another all-time classic wind-up, that originated on Audiogalaxy (I remember it well). I now see that he was just referring to Man In The Shadows. I still regard Deep Ridge, Surrender To The City, and whatever that 3rd track supposedly not included on Queen II was, as being a ridiculous wind-up. I cannot believe the story has gained traction over the years. It's utter nonsense. |
FriedChicken 20.11.2017 06:42 |
Ahh so many old faces in here. So many memories <3 |
FriedChicken 20.11.2017 06:47 |
Pim: I wouldn't say Brian's Curse is a myth. True... Brian May > Brian Wilson -> Dennis Wilson -> Charlie Manson |

Can we include the brilliant Assassin demo leak. Primarily because I still listen to it. |

Looks like Deacy has released a second album. It's even on Spotify! link It MIGHT be his namesake, but you never know :P |
Plengel 21.11.2017 18:33 |
I thought that with the leaking of the tracklist of the "Man in the Shadows" album incl. a Rubettes cover of Sugar Baby Love with John on lead vocals, would've killed the joke, but people were still buying it at the time! |
7Innuendo7 22.11.2017 04:01 |
Fatty's liner notes to Man in the Shadows are great! |
Pim Derks 22.11.2017 06:28 |
Two Worlds Apart was our work yes. It was a Barcelona outtake which was then recorded for Innuendo if I'm not mistaken. Hard to believe I've been on Queenzone for 18 years or so. |
Ozz 04.12.2018 04:56 |
I uploaded this cover back then link and I though It was Lost Forever... But thanks to the wayback machine link I finally have it back :D |
FriedChicken 04.12.2018 07:55 |
Fun fact: I met 'The Voice of Reason' in Rotterdam last summer and he told me about one of his long lasting topics on QZ. I told him my topic with the longest run was 'Brian Curse', then he bowed for me :-D |
thomasquinn 32989 04.12.2018 16:18 |
Maybe it's just that I'm so evil, but wouldn't it be completely **awesome** to actually record the "Man In The Shadows" album as a blatantly, outrageously, obviously fake tribute-and-joke-in-one? Including the artifacts of a hilarious 1989 marketing campaign and tour that somehow went completely and utterly unnoticed? |

Couldn't the album be from 1992? With sleeve notes by Freddie? |

Everybody knows that information on the internet in the early 2000s was highly inaccurate, so they could easily have gotten the date wrong by 3 years or so. Or maybe it's just an alternative fact.
