What are the prices of a pack of cigarettes in your area (including tax)??? The cigarettes were like $4.75 including tax yesterday but now they are near $6.00 today |
inu-liger 08.03.2009 04:50 |
I don't smoke personally, but I believe packs of cigarettes are, with tax here, roughly around $10 CDN on average from what I've seen. |
JoxerTheDeityPirate 08.03.2009 05:42 |
£3 for 50g [half ounce] of Cutters Choice or Golden Virginia rolling tobacco but i dont get mine from a shop so i dont pay tax on it.. in a shop its £5.10 for 25g of the same stuff |
jadedlady 08.03.2009 06:13 |
It does vary from shop to shop and from brand to brand here. Some packs are cheap as $7 and some are about $12. |

20 Marlboro Lights in London can be anything from £5.40 - £6.50, depending on where you are. Around the shittty part of London I live in, they're about £5.50, but I bought a pack from Shaftesbury Avenue (very central London) yesterday and they were nearer the £6.50 mark. Some of the shops round here get cheap foriegn ones in though, and sell them for £3.00, but it's kept very hush hush, due the possible illegal-ness of it. |

I get them for free, but since I don't smoke I usually just pass them on to the local orphans. |

Yes, it's ridiculous. Here, in Sweden, a pack of Prince is almost 50SEK(5£) and a snuffbox the same. When is it enough? They raise the taxes to stop people from using tobacco when all it does is increase smuggle. Stupid. Why don't I quit? |

I don't think it's fair that I have to pay to heal those who got ill because of their own (stupid) choice AND also damage MY lungs with their smoke. |

It's been a long time, but an eighth, which I think is about 3.5g is £20. |

Broken legs from skiing? Injuries from car accidents? Why should you pay for that? Because the health system is based on solidarity. The healthy pay for the sick and the strong pay for the weak. Once you start to discriminate a group of people (smokers) you destroy the idea of solidarity. If you exclude smokers, overweight persons will be next - because why should you pay for the health problems of someone who cannot handle their weight? or the injuries of people who think they can ski (drive) AND destroy the landscape (environment) with their behaviour? |
john bodega 09.03.2009 12:35 |
Slight slippery slope logic, but nonetheless a good point. If one group of people can be tossed overboard, (figuratively speaking), then why not other groups? |

I think for a large pack (25 smokes) in Ontario is about $9.50-$10.00 depending on the variety store. 7Eleven or Mac's is always the most expensive! If you buy them on the Reservation which most do, their brands sell for about $4.00 for a large pack and regular store brands $6.50. Its not cheap to get lung cancer! |

Rule of thumb, dear: If it (any product) can be bought at a normal grocery store or drugstore, it's ALWAYS more expensive at Convenience Stores like those, which are about as convenient as Ticketmaster's "Convenience" charges . . . |

@YV: How much money does your government spend every year to heal injuries caused by skiing and how much money does your government spend every year to heal people with smoking-related diseases? Also, how many people get hurt there every year by people who went skiing and how many people get diseases from breathing other people's smoke? @Jake: My parents do, and neither of them smoke. Everything I buy also got taxes on it. And considering I'm living on my own, I'm over 18 and I'm attending university, in a couple of years I will be working and paying taxes too. And I'd rather see that money becoming better roads, safer cities, better schools and universities and many other things rather than fix someone's wrong choice - same should apply to people who got injured in car crashes while they were drunk, and a few other things. And I don't feel guilty as I say that, because millions are spent to inform people about the dangers of smoking, about driving drunk etc. Nobody can say they didn't know they were doing something harmful. They KNEW what was going to happen since the beginning. |
JoxerTheDeityPirate 10.03.2009 19:14 |
^ there was a bit on the local news here the other day about 'drink driving' with some bloody 'do-gooder' going on about how 25% of all car crashes are caused by drunk drivers which meant that 75% of all crashes were caused by those people who were sober. why dont we get the sober ones to pay more tax to cover the NHS expenses as obviously the drunks are statistically safer on the roads? |
