Dr May mentioned it some time ago in his Soapbox. Don't remember the date though... |

"This language was part of Freddie's heritage in his family, and he had a special affinity with it. The track was a great fun thing to do .. incorporating unusual flavours, and encouraging us to play in Eastern styles !! I'm sure the lyrics are in the original album sleeve. But I cannot tell you what they mean !" "I'm not absolutely sure Freddie wanted to be understood here !!" BHM |

But jokes aside, the way he wrote it seems so tongue-in-cheek. I'm pretty sure it means nothing as Freddie wasn't supposed to know Arabic... |

But he must have spoken another language apart from English, right?. What language was spoken in Zanzibar?. |

Zanzibar was under British rule at the time...while I doubt he learnt anything other than English there, it definitely wasn't Arabic. Probably an African language prevalent there. In India he probably learnt Hindi and/or Gujarati. |

A few years ago I found this on the internet: link |

Interesting, though it seems no one knows what the lyrics mean! :). |

It doesn't matter. It's the same kind of Freddie's fantasy as many others. And exept a name Mustafa there's no connection with Arabs. But Brian mentioned this song in his interwiev for "Guitarist", if I'm right it was november's number |

Pictures form 1985 he is dating to 1986 and he sees lyrics where ther are no lyrics ;) |

Right. They don't spend so much time as we fans do on that kind of things. |

I know it's Brian Harold May but while I was writing the post I found funny the possibility of it being Brian Hussein May. I was simply alluding to the insecurity many Americans have with Obama being a crypto-Muslim(completely untrue, BTW). |

Yes, which is why I referred to Ann Coulter, who calls the newly installed president "B. Hussein Obama", because she is such a deranged racist. |

I asked a friend from Pakistan the meaning of the song some years ago and he said that it means nothing,he could not identify the words as Arabic. |

It's not so much insensitive as in bad taste considering current opinions expressed by certain fanatics bear a striking resemblance to it. No hard feelings, mind you. |

Pittrek I think is right ... but whatever it is, the mustapha song is superb! |

A friend of mine heard WWRY at a party and liked it, so the next time she came visiting a decided to entertain her with some queen music. I played Mustapha for her (since she is a Muslim) because I thought she would be able to relate to it somehow. She said that some of the lyrics seemed to have been adapted from the standard Arabic prayer that is recited by muslims (not just Salaam Aleikum, but some more bits as well). Incidentally, she got offended by the song (she's very conservative in matters of religion you see). |
