Okay, as you can well see, I've been here for a few years and I don't post on here, because most of the time I notice it's not actually Queen related, it's "lets bash Greg Brooks" time and time again. As a true die-hard Queen fan I have been salivating for years waiting for these archive boxes, looking for all of those elusive demo tracks, unreleased material, BBC sessions, B-sides, etc, etc. I too get pissed and frustrated waiting for this material because I really want to hear something new by the band. In the middle of the archive war seems to be Greg Brooks. You can go ahead and start calling me all kinds of horrible names now if you like, but I honestly cannot blame Brooks for the hold-up in this material. True, he guards the gate of the mythical Queen Archive...but his job is only to organize and catalog...he has no power over what is going to be released or when. This is a case of everyone killing the messenger because they don't like the message. Sure, you'll probably have to wait years yet before you see these archive sets released...but if it wasn't for Greg Brooks doing the work he is doing, these boxes wouldn't happen at all. I guess it just gets tiresome hearing all these die-hards crying about how they can't have this song and why they can't have that song...the answer is "YOU WILL" when Queen and their management decide you can have them. Why does everyone have to act like spoiled children..."I want it all and I want it now" indeed. Then QP finally puts some stuff on the market, and although I do agree that a good majority of this is just filler, all people do is complain about it. If you don't like it, don't buy it!! When Queen were active, especially in the "Magic" and "Miracle" era, they released a half dozen versions of the same damn single!!!! Here's a 12", here's a 7", here's the same 12" with etched vinyl, here's the same 7" with a hologram cover, here's both in colored vinyl and picture disc....etc. You know how much all of these "rare" releases are worth today...NOTHING!!!!! They were for the die-hard collectors...and we all bought them. You didn't complain then...so why do it now. I'm not trying to pick sides here. I'm one of the Queen fans who would drown a bag of puppies for the archive material...but there's no use in me wining about it because it's not going to get it released any quicker. Do what I do...go back to the collector's market and pick up some of the original vinyl bootlegs or acetates...then you'll have new stuff to at least add to your collection. We all love Queen and their music...no one here is going to stop listening to Queen just because they don't have all of their outtakes. If you found out that there was not ONE thing in the Queen archive...what in God's name would you bitch about???? This is all my opinion of course...please take it as a serious discussion and not an argument. |

Shouldn't this be called "Sucking Up To QUEEN ARCHIVIST Greg Brooks"? Maybe not. Anyway, I can only speak for myself. The Box Set is way down my list of concerns. In fact, I doubt very much it will ever be released. But I do expect some more interesting stuff to be released next year simply becasue Queen are flogging a dead horse in re-releasing the same old stuff over and over. As for GB, I don't blame him for not releasing the box sets and I doubt very much anyone else does either. But his condescending, patronising, and arrogant behaviour has become very old, very quickly, especially since it seems to sum up Queen Productions' attitude towards fans. What other organisation would treat its customers so shabbily? Anyway, fuck them. I'm off to listed to my Ozzie box set. |
mooghead 26.12.2008 19:09 |
You have to bear in mind that once the box sets are released everything has been catalogued and everything worth considering for release has been considered for release. In other words, once the box sets are out GB is unemployed. Hence the same old shite being trotted out with a different cover or title every couple of years. Bit sad really. I would talk the same amount of shit he does if my job depended on it. |

As I said before, I'm not saying I'm extremely happy with the way things are going within QP. I too am disgusted that every few years they repackage GH...they are still trying to attract new fans, which I do understand, but to a degree they are forsaking us fans who have been around for the past few decades. I'm not looking at Greg Brooks' personality here; I have read his postings at length and often times he is indeed very arrogant. In Queen's heyday, to have anyone connected to their camp who would publicly go to boards like this and get in arguments with fans would mean he'd be on the bread line looking for a new job. If I can blame Greg for anything it is that...it's very unprofessional on his part to take place in these battles. Aren't the band or anyone else in Queen Productions aware of the way he talks to the fans? Do they care? Probably not...although Queen is our favorite band, they are also a business, and as long as the money is coming in.... So, I suppose my title was a bit off...I'm not sticking up for Greg Brooks the man because I agree that he carries himself very poorly on these boards. I am to a degree sticking up for him when it comes to any released product...although he is the archivist he has no control over what is put out. I would imagine if I was him, I would do whatever and say whatever I wanted...I already have the best job on the planet...what would I care what you think? This is, again, all my opinion. |
Benn 28.12.2008 07:38 |
You're absoilutely right that he DOESN'T have any power over what is finally released; anyone who thinks that is simply trying to have a pop at him for the sake of jumping on the bandwagon. "QUEEN ARCHIVIST" creates multiple threads here to satiate his pathetic appetite for being seen and heard. The point is, however, that he appears to do absolutely nothing pro-active in terms of getting ideas in front of the band. His attitude here on these forums is that of some kind of superior, higher being lording it over the masses. He openly admits to NOT taking into account the thoughts and opinions of the posters on Queenzone. How on earth does that translate when QPL desperately need to come up with product that appeals to collectors / long-term fans? The bloke's a bloody idiot and ought to be treated as such. |

marvinp01 wrote: i would love to work as a Queen archivist, how did he get hired??? Years before he got employed by Queen and before the days of the Internet being used as the main tool to search for information, he wrote a very good book called "Queen Live". Haven't seen anything like it. I am sure someone at the Queen camp saw this. Greg certainly knows his stuff and only many years later, many people investigating and collaborating have come up with better and more accurate online sources of information (QueenConcerts.com comes to mind). In my opinion and for a book written in 1995, "Queen Live" was the ultimate information resource for Queen's shows, setlist and all that, even if years later it has been widely known to have many mistakes. |

The now fabled boxset has become a prick-tease. It's like that fit girl who you work with who has flirted with you constantly for the last 10 years. You even go out to bars, pubs and clubs with her. There have been times you've had a snog from her and promises of visiting the promised land (I'm trying to keep it clean here!), but just when you think it's about to happen, it doesn't. I think most people here who keep banging on about the boxset are, basically, hoping they get to hear it before they die. I know I am. It doesn't matter whether you're 18 and been a "fan" since you were 16 or if you are the same age as Brian & Roger (and believe me there are thousands of fans who ARE that age - they've been with Queen since the very beginning), we are all going to die sometime. It could be later today for all any of us know. It's really sad that some of us here know of fans who are no longer with us and they will never hear Freddie singing a song they've never heard before. I don't want to be one of those people. |

I can't believe anyone is sticking up for this moron Brooks. He is obviously a complete retard, with no redeeming features and a silly beard. His amateur fumblings around the archive are a nonsense. He is a total div in my opinion. |

marvinp01 wrote: i would love to work as a Queen archivist, how did he get hired??? From Wikipedia: Greg Brooks is an American comic book artist, best known for his work on the 1988 Crimson Avenger mini-series. He also did work on the Green Lantern, as well as two Marvel titles. In 1988, he was convicted of murdering his wife. He now runs the Queen Archives from prison and from time to time helps out an FBI agent named Clarice Starling. |

Topic Starter: Nobody sensible blames Brooks for holding back the material. What we do blame him for is a) constant mis-information b) spamming the forum c) refusing to do his job and respond to sensible questions |

He has a Q&A section on QOL *AND* functions as the first contact when directing serious questions to Queen Productions. He grossly neglects both jobs. You don't think he spams the forum. Have you noticed the way he comes on here once every few months, posts at least 5 topics (usually in the wrong forums) of self-pity and whining criticism of all of QZ (not shunning personal attacks, of course)? |

I haven't read a lot of the above, but I do feel I should stick up for myself too, since some of you little beauties have. It's the least I can do. So... Greg Brooks is a fine chap. A really rather nice bloke by any standards. Always willing to help others and to aid Queenzoners in everything they do. Hats off to the man. It's hard to find reasons to dislike him, if you don't look very hard. And I'm not doing this because I have a hidden agenda and am trying to win popularity ahead of asking for advice(or any kind of assistance) from Queenzone love monkeys in some other unrelated thread. Anyone thinking that should think again. I shudder to think that even one person out there would think that of me. Now then.... does me writing this waffle mean that this thread goes near to the top of the thread tree again? Not that that's in any way my intent. I was just wondering. |

But that's not simply because they deem it so unlikely. |
