Can anyone tell me , at how many gigs (and where) did the band break with the norm, and open with 'Rock-it' instead of 'The Hero'. I'm pretty sure it might have been some Japan shows. There's one in particular that i had (audio), which was superb. However after a PC crash i cant find it anywhere. |

link has all the answers you seek. Though I do believe it was only the US part of the tour that they opened with Rock It. |
thunderbolt 31742 10.11.2008 22:04 |
All European tour shows opened with Flash and The Hero. For most of the North American tour, Flash would segue into most of Rock It, with the coda of Rock It flowing seamlessly into the last chorus of the fast We Will Rock You. Towards the end of the North American tour, the band stopped playing the fast part of Rock It, and as soon as the meandering intro ended with a drum hit, Freddie would start singing the fast version of We Will Rock You. The Hero was revived for a couple of shows on the Japanese tour as the opener in place of Rock It/WWRY. |

thetman 13.11.2008 17:17 |
yes I took that picture- not the best seats but I did manage to work my way up front some during the show. during their providence show 1980? I think- I did manage to go all the way up front and actually right up to stage (security was much more lax back then). I was able to stay their for about five songs before security caught on. good times indeed. thetman |
The Real Wizard 14.11.2008 03:10 |
Do you still have your Providence pictures, or did they confiscate your camera? |
thetman 15.11.2008 08:58 |
no nobody took my camera- infact in those days I didn't see much security at all- only in the immediate front part of the stage. I didn't have my camera with me when I approached the stage during one of theprovidence gigs- the best pictures i took were during their 77 tour in providence-we actually managed to sneak around the back of the stage where they don't sell seats! here is one of those shots thetman |

Wow.... great story, and fantastic pic. Thanks for that! Any chance you can post some others? |
thetman 15.11.2008 12:52 |
thanks- if I knew now what I knew then i would have bought dozens of rolls of film- I was just a little kid with my parents cheap Instamatic camera. You've got me thinking now- I do have the pictures (somewhere). haven't thought about those pictures-like many others over the years for quite a while. for some reason I had a few in my desk- but not the envelope (and negatives I hope) that they belong in. going to have to do some digging it seems. probably in a box with all my other paraphernalia ( magazines- concert programs etc..) I'll see what I can do thetman |
The Real Wizard 15.11.2008 13:02 |
Beautiful... thanks! Did you attend any other shows besides Providence 80 and Boston 82 ? |
thetman 15.11.2008 15:35 |
I saw them three times-82,80,77. I wish it was more- but hey you don't think of these things when you are young-your just looking for the next good time it seems. I was actually offered ticket for a show- (would have been #4} can't remember the exact year- it was around the jazz tour I believe- but long story short I couldn't get a ride and the person who ended up going .. freddie actually handed the mic over to him and asked him what he wanted to hear and then procedded to dump his drink on him! could have been me! Now that would have been a good story, buthey 3 times ain't too shabby I guess. How about yourself- did you see anyof the shows? thetman |

That last pic is one of the best Queen photos I've ever seen. thanks |
Phoenix501 18.11.2008 12:22 |
It's strange to see Queen's great front man in the background - but still at the front - if you know what I mean. Great shot of Brian also. This is better than some of those stereo shots Brian keeps putting up on his SB. |
Joehead 18.11.2008 13:07 |
Great picture of the Garden '82 show, that show was the once and only time I got to see the band live (although I did see Brian open for G'N'R at the Garden in "93)....but back to to '82...it was the best concert I have ever seen, and I've seen alot of concerts in my day...my only regret is that I didnt catch them at the Garden 2 years earlier! |
thetman 18.11.2008 19:18 |
thanks for kind words on the photo-seriously this thread has got me thinking of where the hell are the rest of them-I'm not in the nervous state yet, the search continues. I do know that the 77 pics were pretty close up like the one I posted-infact now that i think of it- I believe some were taken from the front of the stage as well...I know you'd think I would have kept better track of them-but honestly its always been about the music first- never been a big autograph or memorabilia collector. But of course I do have few queen signed items that I enjoy-but the music always comes first. Joehead you were at the garden in 82 as well? very cool, your right it was great concert- they all sounded great that night. I'm actually listening to it right now- laughing at freddie's intro to fat bottomed girls.I also saw Brian in 93 at The Strand in providence and was lucky to meet him and snap a few photos at Tower records in Boston. JoeHead did youhappen to snap any pics at the concert? I wish I had seem them more- but I do consider myself lucky having seem them at all- I still think it would have been great to see them in Wembley or The rainbow! but even I was too young for that I suppose. theman |
Joehead 19.11.2008 13:05 |
Thanks for the reply thetman!...I wish I had a camera that night, but I was high up in the balcony, so I guess I would'nt have take great pictures anyway. I bought that Garden bootleg a few years ago, seriously it was like finding the holy grail when I got it!!...I treat July 23rd like a holiday every year!..I constantly scour the net for anything related to that show (pictures, reviews, etc.). I remeber being on Causeway St, the night they played the Garden in 1980 and wishing I had the cash to get in!...a friend of mine ended up buying a T-Shirt from a guy selling those old "bootleg" shirts, you know the ones!...Well I got mine in "82 and still have it to this day, it is very frail and a little torn and it even has Billy Squire on it!...I just remember it being the ideal Summer night, and a Friday too, but as we all know here in Boston, the Garden was not a great place to be in the heat of the Summer!..I wish they had come back in '84! |
thetman 19.11.2008 17:49 |
yes it was very hot that week- yes, the garden sucked when it was hot- I remember the day after still hyped up about at my friends house and it was a hot one for sure! I didn't pick up any t-shirts that night-but i did manage to take a few pics and finding the CD of the concert was just a fantastic find- I have the 1980 Providence concert on CD too. I don't think there is anything available for the 77 providence show. Small world though- what I can't believe is that I paid probably a total of under $30 to see Queen three times. thetman |
Joehead 20.11.2008 10:46 |
If you dont own it already, the 1980 Oakland show is excellent! They were on fire that night! |
thetman 20.11.2008 17:22 |
Actually I don't have that one- how is the quality? thetman |
The Real Wizard 20.11.2008 23:31 |
The quality is superb. You can download it here: link The Chicago and London recordings in the thread sound excellent as well. |
