"Ok, we did the tribute concert... thanks Freddie but it's time to move on... Paul, you're in!" (picture this around 1993 or something). Would TCR get the same reception? |

Who cares? Shut up. |

It would have been the same shit but most embarrasing taking into account how close the Freddie Mercury death was. |

Try 1999 or 2000 and it could have been different. I remember there being a buzz about Brian and Roger intending to have some studio time, write songs and then see who would be best to sing the songs. Rock music had somewhat of a come back around 2000 with al those "psedo-nu" metal bands, Brian May played with the Foos in the M:I2 soundtrack. I don't know, MAYBE it would have caused more of a splash back then. But hey, what's the problem with it now? |

Allright!!! Mooghead's got a new song. Love the title. |

i dont think it would of been good to move on so quickly after Freddie. let it be this year or 10 ago... change the singer, and you have another new blend of styles. and new complaints...héhéhé... |

As I'd said recently on QOL, if Queen were to take on another variation of the '+' projects, I would absolutely love to see them work with Utada Hikaru (who some of you may recall did a fabulous cover of "Living On My Own" live, on the Bohemian Summer 2000 DVD...I'll post a YouTube link later when I get home) Some of her material may not sit well with some Queen fans, but hey, I think they would make an interesting combination :-) She can also play piano and guitar too, so she fits the 'extra' requirements already :-) |

It would have sounded just as outdated as it does today[br] |

I think it would have been a similar reception, but a better product. They would have been fresh off of Queen, and still full of ideas, probably the same ideas that came into Back to the Light and Happiness. The whole waiting out of respect for the dead thing is freaking silly. No time period is going to change anything, and it's not like this was Freddie's ship, it was a ship with 4 captains. And you know what else, AC/DC didn't wait very long before they replaced Bon Scott with Brian Johnson and the first album back blew all their others away in hits, sales, popularity and total success. Back In Black, You Shook Me All Night Long.... those were fresh after Scott passed away. You don't the Rolling Stones waiting to replace their guitarist who died, nor Def Leppard either. Why should Freddie then be treated so differently? Also, remember that Freddie and John Deacon both joined the two after Tim Staffel left, so Smile was the real start of Brian and Roger's union and they should feel no shame in continuing something they started in the first place. I think the ultimate opportunity back then would have been cruel, but cool. What if Freddie had died and John retired right off. Could they have joined up with Joe Elliott, Phil Collen and Rick Savage to form a Def Leppard/Queen supergroup? The cruel part would be telling Rick Allen to raise his left hand if he has a problem with Roger replacing him. The Freddie tribute was their introduction of Vivian Campbell as their new 2nd guitarist and it hasn't exactly worked out super well for them. Taylor and May would have fit in with the three Leppard members better than any other act I could imagine, Def Leppard afterall is most HEAVILY influenced by Queen, and the Guitar genius that died with Steve Clark could have been better replaced by the ultimate of all guitarists, plus Roger's 2 arms and superior talents even if he only had one arm like Rick Allen, would have made Def Leppard and Queen into a fine combination. The way I see it, B and R have wasted 10 years, or more if you discount those awesome pairs of solo albums each had in the 90's following Queen. I'd still have wanted to get Made In Heaven though, and even the best compilation would pale with Freddie's participation. At least Queen didn't wait 30+ years like the Doors did. |
Marcos Napier 15.10.2008 01:10 |
That's my point, it would sound more (any word used here will offend the "true fans") real and motivated than now, whomever might have joined them. Doors did it 30 years later... just for money which is not obviously the case of Queen - or so I've heard. Plus in 1991 we didn't have reality shows to find replacements, like INXS did, turning them into sort of a franchising brand. What if Axl for example had joined in? |

It would've been embarrassing to say the least, considering what Paul looked like back then... link Cool interview by the way. 12 years ahead of its time. Doh! V. |

It would have had little impact as grunge was in full swing, and much like the "Hair" bands, it would have spelt the end for them. |

The impact of Freddie's death was so huge, that no new music trend could affect it. It was 1991 when Freddie died and grunge erupted and somehow Queen and Nirvana went head to head on charts in the following years. Freddie's death could have been an end of a certain era, but it wasn't. In a very unplanned way Queen survived another fashion... (which I'm sure it would anyway!). As far as the 'what if' thing is concerned... Well, I am quite glad it took them such a while. I am a bit sorry though that the rest of Queen didn't form a new band sometime in the 90's (as Velvet Revolver did), because Brian, Roger and John are three very gifted musicians and no-one should take away their right to make music. But, it's just a thought. What happened now is a different story, everyone has it's own opinion on it and that's where I shall finish my post. |

The question was wether TCR would do well 15 years ago. Wether Queen with Freddie could have, or did, prosper through grunge is a different story all together. |

I think that just like Brian's "BTTL" The Cosmos Rocks would have had a big impact, perhaps even debuting at no.1 on British charts. Freddie's death created plenty of buzz and people just craved for any things Queen or Queen related. Releasing it in 1993 would have been incredibly risky though. Considering the quality of the material on TCR the band would have been panned by the critics even more than they were now. They would have been accused of bad taste and trying to capitalise on their own singer's tragedy. The album would have sold much more copies, but the long term impact could have been disastrous for Queen. |

When I asked I wasn't referring directly to TCR (crap today, crap 17 years ago) but to them returning shortly after Freddie's death like some bands did when some of their members died. |

Well, you have my opinion in one of my previous posts then. Brian, Roger and John continuing after Freddie's death under a different name - yes, absolutely. I can imagine such a comeback some time after the release of "Made in Heaven". It seemed like a suitable moment - with MIH Queen's history was oficially closed, but the boys were still young and there was a lot of buzz surrounding them. Any new project would probably attract a lot of attention and cause much excitement. Unfortunately they didn't have the right singer back then (or so they say) and instead of a new joint effort we received new solo records, Queen+ collaborations, remixes and the musical... Man, when you look at it now it's not funny anymore, is it? |
