Just to balance the appearance of certain threads here on Queenzone I thought someone needed to put out a slightly more positive message. Without Paul's involvement hundreds of thousands of fans wouldn't have the opportunity to experience the musical talents of Brian, Roger and Paul. Personally feel that Paul is doing a great job, he's the front man of the group now and like it or not he's doing things his way which is just fine by me. Can't wait for the UK leg of the tour. |

Sometimes far to many threads on Queenzone come across like they've been authored by Victor Meldrew - for those outside the UK check out link You can just see the thread title now - What a successful Queen line up without Freddie? - I don't believe it! Get used to it - time moves on and as the name suggests it is a collaboration not a replacement - Queen + Paul Rodgers. Without Paul appreciating both what makes Brian and Roger tick and an appreciation of fans needs we wouldn't have such a rich and enjoyable musical experience. A front man brings a group of talented individuals together and knows when to take the lead and when to let the group perform. |

Treasure Moment + Nordman, now there's a collaboration worth the name! Heh, just kidding. WELL SAID MY FRIEND! Paul Rodgers rock,(now I'll make a bald statement) probably rocks harder than Freddie would at his age. Too bad I don't get to see them on this tour... Another time...I hope. |

Interesting and bold comment - tend to agree Freddie wouldn't have been playing at this age if he'd still been around - or he would have completely changed musical styles by now. I feel he wouldn't have been relaxed with the idea of growing old. This isn't to detract from the current line up or musical output. Any group is a sign of their time and their background and Queen + Paul Rodgers are very unique which a lot of people seem to have issues with but a lot more fully appreciate thankfully - I'm expecting to be rocking with several thousand of them over the coming days! |

Exactly! If Freddie was still around Queen would be finished as a live act and perhaps even as a studio band. I'm not even convinced Innuendo would have been made had he not gotten sick, he turned to Queen and the music for comfort in his last couple of years I feel. But they'd be finished as a live act for sure.Didn't Freddie say something like that in an interview at some stage? Something along the lines of " I know there will come a time when I won't be able to run around on stage, well because it would be ridiculous. But music will still be in my.....eh..thing" Or something like that! So I for one am grateful to Paul Rodgers for giving me the oppertunity to have a live "Queen" experience even if its not with Freddie present as I was too young to see them in 86. I had a great time in 2005 and I can't wait for Saturday and againfor November 4th. Plus I love the album, interestingly enough some of the tracks from TCR that I didn't really notce on first listen or two are now amoungst my favoutites on the album. I think Small and Glitter are great songs but it took a couple of listens where as I loved Time to Shine, C-lebrity and Cosmos Rockin immediately |

I like Paul a lot. He is fun, very talented, and they are having a good time together. I got the impression that he was not trying to take over (as front man) but instead that they have created more of a combined presence on stage, with Brian and Roger (mostly Brian) sharing a lot of the focus. (I haven't seen the new performances from this tour yet.) Having to learn all those Queen songs and do mostly Queen material on stage - that is really something that Queen fans should be thanking him for doing. And Paul wrote some really good songs for TCR. |
Hitman1965 07.10.2008 05:26 |
It's strange how things work out. Queen + whoever just wouldn't have worked in some ways ten years ago but at the moment it seems to be the right line up at the right time. Paul brings a lot to the current line up and I think that is what some hardliners really don't like. Of cause the new album is going to have a big slant in Paul's direction - he's the new front man of the group for god's sake and Brian and Roger appreciate this. I always like when Brian and Roger take lead vocals but I can fully understand the input and emphasis Paul's impact has had on TCR's which is a good thing in my opinion - would love to hear Paul doing a version of Small on the upcoming dates in the UK. Comparing albums I personally much prefer this current album say in comparison to the Works or AKOM - it comes over as a much more rounded piece of work with a lot more thought. Hope Paul's involvement continues and they make a second album after the current tour comes to an end. It would be a shame to just do the one album. |

Paul is a good singer. I remember when his cheeks sagged like the Lion on the Wizard Of Oz. It was hilarious. He totally had plastic surgery to fix it though. |

Message to New One. You can only speculate Queen wouldn't have been around if Freddie was still with us. In a interview with Mike Read, you can listen to on David Fuller's great website, Freddie clearly mentioned he wouldn't be doing another Opera album like the collaboration with Montserrat Caballe, and if my hearing is still as it should be I did hear him say music was in his blood meaning therefore the Band would have carried on with music as long as the public bought their records. Brian May mentioned in a ITV viewers Awards ceremony in which Queen won 'best group of the 80's' they hoped to carry and bring out some new material into the 90's, sadly Freddie's demise put paid to that as we all know. As for Paul Rodger's he is certainly brave taking on Queen's stuff, but I personally don't like his vocals (his voice tends to crack into that husky gravel too often suggesting lack of power and dexterity) nor do I like what he is doing with the Band's songs changing the keys tempo, style of the songs, these songs in their original form are very dear to the fans and are all time classic songs. If people want to pay money to watch the present lineup that's an experience I'm sure they won't forget as I am sure the music will be brilliant, but the vocals imo will be weak! The new album is definitely a Paul Rodgers+Queen effort not enough of the Red Special there are no memorable solos as in the past, even on the poppier songs such as AKOM, BC, TATDOOL, his solos are truly outstanding. C-Lebrity I like the music but the lyrics or vocals don't seem to flow that smoothly, and Roger's chorus was a bit naff, sorry Roger. |

I don't think we wouldn't have opportunity to see Brian and Roger because they intended to go on tour playing Queen songs someday anyway. It's sad what I will say now, but even Robbie Williams would be much better choice...and I was against him...I was too rough it seems... |
bhm0129ad 07.10.2008 10:18 |
All this speculation about Freddie and the future of Queen is Bunk. Freddie always said he would go on till the fans disappeared and that he 'wouldn't make old bones' - comments pre-1986. That's important, as anything he said or did after 1986 was said knowing he was dying. If not for his illness, everything after AKOM would have been totally different, and after such a mega successful tour in '86, with Freddie gaining his Label as ' Greatest Frontman' on the back of that tour and Live Aid, I'm quite sure he would have toured again. He must have been devastated having such worldwide acclaim at that time, knowing that he must end it, and must have secretly strongly desired to tour The Miracle ( or whatever it would have been if he was well). As for Paul Rodgers, Freddie Loved him, and probably looks down saying... 'why did it take you so bloody long to do this ( to Brian and Roger), you should've carried on the day after my funeral'. That is what I feel Freddie's attitude would have been. ROCK ON PAUL, And QUEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Have you heard the album, there is more of it present than the last 4 Queen albums! Message to BAND FOREVER: Thanks for the response but we can all only speculate as to what would have happened had Freddie not gotten sick and passed away. I personaly don't think that Freddie would have continued for more than a few more years and I definetly don't think Innuendo would have happened had he not been sick. For one thing as you quite rightly pointed out they would have toured The Miracle and this would have been a huge tour much like the Magic tour, I think after this there would have been a break for a while, hence no Innuendo. The Innuendo album is very much put together with Freddies looming death and tragic illness in mind, so had he not been I'll this inspiration would not have been there. And I don't believe Freddie would have wanted to tour much beyond around 50 years old as he was such an active stage pressence and would not have wanted to comprimise on that. Perhaps they would have done some sort of reunion tour early in the new century as so many of the old great bands did? Or perhaps not, who knows? As I said before he did actually say that in some form of interview. As for Paul changing the vocals, I as a life long fan have no problem with that. I would rather see him make them his own than to simply impersonate Freddie. Do I like it as much as Freddies versions? Of course not but I still like it and I also thinks he treats the songs with great respect which I think Freddie would be proud of ( I know he messes up the words occasionally but hey Elvis did that all the time). You are also right when you say that the songs are very dear to fans in there original formats but Pauls method doesn't take anything away from that, we can all still listen to the albums both studio and live and enjoy them as much as ever. You're also right when you said Paul is very brave to do this. You don't like his vocal, thats fair enough I don't like lots of peoples vocals either but luckily for me I do enjoy Paul Rodgers. And as for the guitar on TCR I have to disagree with you on that one, I think the guitar on the album is wonderfull and actually makes the album for me. Even most of the critics who have slated the album in gereral have had the good grace to admit that. Its a shame you don't like the QPR project as I do. Its like a dream come true for me to be getting to see the band again and a new album that I thought would never happen. Its also great to have a reasonable conversation about this subject rather than the usual mindless idiotic ranting. Thank you for that and I hope you catch the QPR bug at some stage. Wow that went on a bit, sorry! |

Message to New One. I take all your points on board. I know with the likes of Jagger and McCartney still touring, Freddie would not want to let go of the reputation the group gained as a Live Band slip away, I guess only Brian May/Roger Taylor/John Deacon would know this for sure, perhaps the show would be less energetic with FM concentrating on the vocals rather than running around the stage trying to connect with every pair of eyes/ears in the stadium like he used to, FM would have probably had a heart attack putting in that enormous physical effort nowadays. I wish the present line up a successful tour, but as so many fans/pundits/critics have commented its not Queen of old as Freddie was and still remains arguably the best Rock Vocalist of all time and a inspiration to the other members of the band I believe, maybe the criticism is a little unfair on the new lineup because these guys are in their 60's now, but . when you listen to LATB and QRM it's like chalk and cheese compared the 2005 Tour and what I have heard so far on this current Tour, I can't see this new band reaching those levels, let alone any other outfit these days. |
new one 08.10.2008 04:44 |
Message to BAND FOREVER: Perhaps your right about Freddie being less energetic during the shows but ts also hard to imagine isn't it? As for the new lne up not reaching the heights of the glory days your right about that after all as you said these guys are all around the 60 mark now and should actually be applauded for the energy that they do put into the show. Its obvios that they are not trying to be the Queen of old given the chice of Paul Rodgers to front the band. I think this is just 3 guys or 2 if we just talk about Brian and Roger who are enjoying playing together again after all those years that they couldn't or wouldn't. Back in the days of Montreal or live at the bowl the band was on a mission to conquer the music world and to stay at the top. Now they're just doing it to enjoy themselves and luckily that also gives us fans the chance to enjoy it too. They still create a lot of that Queen magic live given that the old master is no longer their and the shows leave you feeling great. I'm going again on Saturday to Glasgow. I'd suggest to you if you don't mind, to try get to a show if you've not already. I think there are still tickets going about for some. If you approach with the right mind set its a great nights entertainment. I used to go see tribute bands but after this I don't think I ever will again |

Peter Freestone said Freddie always passed his pre-tour physicals and always had a lot of energy. What's age got to do with it? Tina Turner, over 60, is on tour now, Cher has unretired how many times and is in Las Vegas, as is Bette Midler. Deep Purple was looking good not too long ago. Who knows how long Freddie might have been on stage (but not in a leotard, he said - that would be ridiculous.) Long live Q+PR! |

Great to read so many positive comments for a change. Totally agree that if you approach going to a Queen and Paul Rodgers concert with the right attitutde and a positive look on the material you are guaranteed a great time. Never attended any Queen tribute band concerts and never will - Freddies no longer here which is a tremendous loss but time moves on and wild horses couldn't keep me away from the upcoming UK concerts. |

I used to be against Brian and Roger touring without Freddie and John and with Paul and still calling themselves Queen. No Queen without Freddie and Deacy I thought. I know think I was wrong about that, now it's fine with me and I think it's great we can still see them live and Paul Rodgers sings very well in my opinion. It was awesome to see them live yesterday and I'd go again anytime if I could I think it's also great they honour Freddie in their concerts, like with Bijou and love of my life. The concerts are very respectful. |

new one 08.10.2008 19:56 |
Sure, I guess it would be nice in a way to see Paul being more energetic on stage but thats really not being fare on him is it. Pauls stage style is his own and he's been that way for years much as Freddies style was to be all over the stage. Paul delivers a great vocal and I wouldn't want to sacrifice that just to see him run around on stage. Besides, he'd then be accused of trying to impersonate Freddie which he obviously doesn't want or need to do. Lets just appreciate the moment and let the cosmos rock guys! |
April 09.10.2008 06:00 |
Yes, you are right, though a bit more action won't do any harm. And i don't think by that he would imitate Freddie, cause nobody could imitate Freddie. Just he should introduce something to accompany his singing. |

But you've gotta love how he spins and throws that mic stand up in the air and manages to catch it. Very Paul Rodgers, much like mincing about, simulating shagging the stage and using the mic stand in a sexually provocative way very Freddie Mercury. I think they're both great!!! Ref the Freddie statement "it would look ridiculous" etc he said that in 1986 with an insight to what lay around the corner after that tour so we shouldn't read too much into it who knows if Freddie had still been alive what Queen would be doing in 2008.
