Hi.
This is for all the Camcorder owners.
When you film something, Lets say 10 minutes of your son or daughter his first steps, Or the 65th birthday of your mother, Do you keep the mastertapes, Or do you put it onto a dvd and just erase the master?, I have a sony hc-53 and got 18 mastertapes(the newest was shot today at a gig at the restaurant at my school), Offcourse if i get a Firewire kit, And a few empty cd's/dvd's i will burn them, but i NEVER EVER get rid of the mastertapes, Because the Quality of the MINI-DV tapes(or What ever kind of tape your using) Is beter then what you burn onto a dvd or cd.
And Mini dv tapes can go on for like 10 or 15 years i think, If you keep them in a nice suitcast(like i do).

I don't film anything. But I believe
my family keeps all the master tapes of all events. I would too. But
don't go around filming Anita Dobson, she's old enough to be your
granny.

Its nice that your family keep all the masters BUT they should transfer them to dvd(not in a stoer, But with a pc).
Despite all the technology involved in the DVDs, I'd keep some of the most important masters. I had a few DVDs burned in bad media that literally were destroyed after a few months. It's too naive to assume that DVDs will last forever, they (or some at least) won't.
The difference in quality might be because the tape had too much content for the DVD and when it was authored, it was compressed to fit in the DVD capacity. Some authoring softwares also (re)compress the source anyway if you're not careful with the settings.
