Hi, I'm 16 years old and had never listened to a Queen album in my life until the other day. I was slagging off old music to my friends dad so he made me take home his new copy of the cosmos rocks(new queen album). To hear some real music apperantly? I have to say its amazing, I never knew queen music had such good guitar on it. Time to shine is a totally amazing song too. So I had to go back to my friends house and admit I was wrong about queen. Today I went and bought the album for myself but I notice there were lots of other queen cds too. Which ones are any good? Which ones are the best ones? I have a birthday in November so I might ask for a couple if they are good. |

Hi! So you started your collection with an album that is no REAL QUEEN album....my advice for you would be to start with Greatest Hits I + II, you can't go wrong with that. Then you will see which songs from those are your favourites and you can check out the albums from which they are taken. |

Because Queen have done many different genres. But buying at least Sheer Heart Attack, A Night At The Opera, News Of The World, Jazz, and Innuendo would be a good start |

No real queen album? How? It says Queen and Paul Rodgers on the cd. Is it a cover version album? I will get greatest hits then, I saw that today and noticed it has another one bites the dust on it. I do like that song. |

No, it's not a "tribute" album. 3 of 5 surviving members of the last active lineup (Brian May, Roger Taylor + Spike Edney) grouped together with Paul Rodgers, Jamie Moses and Danny Miranda and formed a new band called "Queen + Paul Rodgers". Some people consider it as a new lineup of Queen, some people consider it a new band. That's what I was talking about. It depends on you what you think about it. Well A Night At The Opera is actually a nice masterpiece, you surely know Bohemian Rhapsody, which comes from this album. Sheer Heart Attack & Jazz are classical hard rock albums, NOTW is a straight rock albums with some blues songs ... |

Don't understand why people think its a new band then if some of the other members are still in it. Lots of bands have new members, look at oasis there only Liam and Noel |
MartynR90 22.09.2008 12:58 |
I would start with 'the works' cos its got most of their best 80's stuff; 'Radio Ga Ga', 'I want to break free' etc. Innuendo is also a good choice! Queen CD'S are quite cheap these days! But i also think that greatest hits 1 and 2 is the best place to start! Oasis have an everchanging lineup, with noel and liam as the key members of the band. Dig Out Your Soul!!!! Anywazy i better shut up about Oasis, as this is a Queen forum. |
Adolfo and the spiders from Mercury 22.09.2008 13:04 |
HEY KID!! you could buy any queen album and enjoy it, my personal favorites are A night at the opera, Innuendo, The miracle. Of course I like them all, those are the ones I play the most I think |

listen to the all ,but save .the news of the world till last.when listening to it skip it's late, save that for the last queen song you listen to.perfection. |

Assuming that this is not another windup or someone having a laugh, it is very interesting that someone gets to know Queen through "The Cosmos Rocks". Timing is a bit weird, since the album has been out for only a week. I got to know Queen by listening to Hot Space and ADATR almost at the same time as I listened to GH1. I still love Hot Space to this day. Good that you get to know the band. You could also listen to other classic rock era bands and artists at the same time and become the first non-obsessive Queen fan ever and actually acknowledge other artist's contribution to the music world :). |

If it's more raw, rock sounding songs, we will rock you, crazy little thing called love, now i'm here etc go for the 70's, Queen 1 & 2, Sheer heart attack, night at the opera etc (there are more from 70's too!) Also Innuendo album, from 1991, was back to the 70's sound, a great album, but i would leave innuendo and made in heaven until the end, you'll appreciate them more. Any more questions drop me a pm |

Got a loan of the album News of the World from the friends old man as I recognised We are the champions and we will rock you. Just listened to it, really good album. Liked Its late best I think. My Melancholy blues is pretty crap and so is all dead all dead. Which album has more modern songs like Time to shine or C-lebrity? |

Also from The Works or Greatest Hits 2 the song Hammer to Fall is a cracker, one of my favourites and one of Brian Mays finest hours(You mentioned you like guitar) You'd find a lot of these songs on you tube to have a listen before you go out and buy an album |

Whatever you do, do NOT listen to Bohemian Rhapsody. It will mess you up for the rest of your life. Trust me. |
marcenciels 22.09.2008 20:58 |
everybody is suggesting you a studio album. you like it when it rocks, listen to Queen "Live Killer". i was a fan before it, and most people i know became Queen fans for a good stretch when they heard "Live Killer". |
thunderbolt 31742 22.09.2008 22:36 |
If you want a great document of Queen's over-the-top Jazz tour shows, Live Killers is a great place to start. It also offers incredible versions of "Now I'm Here" (a straight rocker similar to "Cosmos Rockin'") and "Brighton Rock" (the infamous Brian May guitar solo). Some other songs, notably "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Get Down, Make Love", don't sound so good. As for their studio albums, Sheer Heart Attack is my personal favorite, but I've always believed that Queen II embodies what they were as a band in the 1970s, before "Hot Space" happened. That's not to say they didn't make some great songs in the '80s, but for me, Queen is first and foremost a rock band, and Queen II is the best document of their progressive rock origins. |

Went on youtube last night and found "Hammer To Fall" live as someone suggested. Wow!! What a song, I can't believe I've never heard this before. The guitar is amazing. Who's the guy in the yellow shorts on bass? He need some fashion tips big time. |

Who's the guy in the yellow shorts on bass? He need some fashion tips big time.he's John Deacon, Queen's Bass player untill 1999(ish). If you like Brian May's guitar you might want a live album, like live at Wembley (that is the concert that the hammer to fall video you saw on youtube is from). Made in Heaven is drowning in guitar too, but I don't know if that’s the best place to start a collection. Listen to a few songs on Youtube first. |

Hey! I would really suggest you listened to Sheer Heart Attack (Album). It is such a great album and contains a wide variety of styles, like heavy metal (Stone Cold Crazy), Bring Back That Leroy Brown (Music Hall, according to Wikipedia), Lap of the Gods... revisited (arena rock) and others. A Day At The races is also a great album. |
kingogre 23.09.2008 15:24 |
Jazz has a lot of rock songs and great guitar playing from Brian May. Some people think it doesnt hold together as an album as good as some of the other albums but it makes up for this with having lots of individually great songs. Sheer Heart attack and a day at the races Id imagine are good places to start aswell. Some of the their other albums might seem a little strange to a new listener.:) You can hear songs in live versions or watch videos on Youtube if you are interested. |

any new person to Queen should listen to the first three CD's; try and study the background and inspiration behind the lyrics, most unlike the later songs written. You will be surprised where inspiration comes from. |
Sammywho 23.09.2008 16:07 |
see if you can find out which song was inspired by a painting in the Louvre - if that's not artistic expression (good job Fred) |

Sammywho wrote: any new person to Queen should listen to the first three CD's; try and study the background and inspiration behind the lyrics, most unlike the later songs written. You will be surprised where inspiration comes from.I don't agree. I personally wasn't fond of Queen and Queen II until a long time. And I was a fan by that time, but they still didn't ring a bell to me. I fell in love first with the masterpiece that A Night At The Opera is. But I can't say this should be a starter for everyone. The Greatest Hits I, II and III are a good place to start, but of course they fail to encompass the true diversity of Queen. I keep thinking that had I listened first to the Greatest Hits rather than to A Night At The Opera, I don't believe they'd have made such an amazing impression on me... So, dear friend, try to listen as much as possible if you can. Queen are very diverse and each album is a different world in itself. Try not to be prejudiced against old music. Old music who has stood the test of time is worth a listen, take my word for it. To help you make your choices: link This is a channel on youtube with various Queen videos. Listen mostly to the ones who have "high quality" in the title. I think there are almost all the Queen songs in there, so you can choose accordingly. PM me if you want to talk more about Queen music. |

Do what many of the "new" Queen fans did in 1991 & when Freddie died, start with Greatest Hits II, I would recommend buying it on CD because it will tell you which single is from which album & then hunt the albums down, oh I'm feeling generous I'll do it now (& I'm wide awake) 1) A kind of magic (A kind of magic 1986) 2) Under pressure (Hot space 1982) 3) Radio ga ga (The works 1984) 4) I want it all (The miracle 1989) 5) I want to break free(The works 1984) 6) Innuendo (Innuendo 1991) 7) It's a hard life (The works 1984) 8) Breakthru (The miracle 1989) 9) Who wants to live forever (A kind of magic 1986) 10) Headlong (Innuendo 1991) 11) The Miracle (The miracle 1989) 12) I'm going slightly mad (Innuendo 1991) 13) The invisible man (The miracle 1989) 14) Hammer to fall (The works 1984) 15) Friends will be friends (A kind of magic 1986) 16) One vision (A kind of magic 1986) From memory track listings don't differ across the world but this is the UK version If you like all of it, there isn't really much to dislike go further back with Hits I, now I do know the track listings did differ in 1981, but UK wise 1)Bohemian rhapsody (A night at the opera 1975) 2)Another one bites the dust (The game 1980) 3)Killer queen (Sheer heart attack 1974) 4)Fat bottomed girls (Jazz 1978) 5)Bicycle race (Jazz 1978) 6)You're my best friend (A night at the opera 1975) 7)Don't stop me now (Jazz 1978) 8)Save me (The game 1980) 9)Crazy little thing called love (The game 1980) 10)Somebody to love (A day at the races 1976) 11)Now i'm here (Sheer heart attack 1974) 12)Good old fashioned lover boy (A day at the races 1976) 13)Play the game (The game 1980) 14)Flsh (Flash gordan soundtrack 1980) 15)Seven seas of rhye (Queen II 1974) 16)We will rock you (News of the world 1977) 17)We are the champions (News of the world 1977) Once you have these two compilations (avoid Hits III as it is a total rip off but that's a different story)you can see which albums produced the most singles, & you will notice Hot Space has only one which reflects the general opinion it was Queens worst album which to me it was. Yet here's the contradiction "Las Palasbras De Amor" a single from it should have been included as it charted in the UK at number 17. Yet that didn't stop "The Miracle" or "I'm Going Slightly Mad" being included numbers 21 & 22 on the Hits II & to me it is the best song on the album ref Hot Space As a rule the 1980's Queen were very commercial especially 1984-86 (Hot Space's failure most likely prompted this) 3/4 "works" singles charted top 10, "Hammer To Fall" the exception & this trend continued with "One Vision" & "A Kind of Magic in 1985 & 1986 After the 3 year chart hiatus "I Want It All" in 1989 rocked to number 3 & it's top notch don't listen to "the miracle album haters". Breakthru carried on to number 7 in the same year. Even though the "innuendo" singles didn't chart too highly the title track deserved to hit number 1, technically speaking so did "These are the days of our lives" when it was coupled with bo-rhap as a tribute to Freddie xmas 1991 With regards to 70's "A Night at The Opera" is pretty much essential & i would start there & your curiosity will make you want to own a very similar titled album "A Day at The Races" & see the differences there isn't many really both excellent. "Sheer Heart Attack" I very highly recommend lots of guitar "Queen & Queen II" I would leave till later not as instant & hard work for a new fan. "Jazz" I would class similarly some people really like it, some don't. Personally speaking the track listing for the album doesn't run smoothly as previous albums the opener "Mustapha" I still don't like, the 1st time I heard it I hated it "The Game" is a very good pop/rock record an indication to what the rest of 1980's would have in store "News of The World" I personally think its very underrated & I would buy it for two songs alone "It's Late" by Brian & "My Melancholy Blues" by Freddie the last two songs on the album. Some people think the album lacks in terms of production & some of the songs seem like "demos" but each to their own Live wise there is Live Killer 1979 (double live album) Live Magic 1986 (single heavily edited but does feature Another One Bites The Dust from Queens last gig with Freddie at Knebworth) Live at Wembley Stadium (1992 full album) Live at Milton Keynes Bowl (2004) Both Wembley & Milton Keynes have DVD's If you like Brian's stuff a compilation released in 1997 Queen Rocks is an option & does include John Deacon on "No-One But You" & finally "Made In Heaven" 1995 featuring the last material recorded with Freddie in 1991 & re makes of some of Freddie's solo material, Brian's & Roger's as well as Queen b-side remake. If you want to hear Freddie's last vocal recording you will need this for the song "Mother Love" as Freddie said "they're you have it" |

LOL! I admire that you will be one of a young few who can hear it first and unbiasedley compare/contrast new from old. I'd say it's mostly uphill from where you are. If you are truly fascinated most by the guitar sound, the best in my opinion for Red Special guitar are: 1. Flash Gordon(2 real songs and the rest are sections of music for the movie. Guitar moments like you have never heard.) 2. The Miracle(Just seems to be loaded throughout with the best overall sound for the Red Special.) 3. News of the World 4. Queen II 5. Innuendo 6. A Kind of Magic If I were you i'd start off with Innuendo and A Night At The Opera to get the classic ANATO contrasting against Innuendo which would show you their early and later style clashes. My favorites go: 1. Queen II 2. News of the World 3. A Night At The Opera 4. A Day at the Races 5. The Miracle 6. Queen 7. Jazz 8. Sheer Heart Attack 9. Innuendo 10. Flash Gordon 11. The Game 12. A Kind of Magic 13. Hot Space 14. Made In Heaven 15. The Works 16. The Cosmos Rocks. The real gap for me if any comes between 11 and 12. |
