Is anybody on QZ seriously into archery?
I was hoping to find someone who knows something about compound bows. I only know about recurve bow, but I fancy a change and would like to know how the two formats compare.
For example...
How much more powerful are compounds, than recurves?
How much further can a good qualty compound bow shoot, than an equal quality recurve?
Do most compound archers start out on recurves or long bows and then go over to compounds??? If so, why?
Does it require more, or less, effort, to pull a compound bow, than a similar size recurve??? And do the firing mechanisms make it much easier on the fingertips than recurve tabs??? they surely MUST do, right?
Am I right in thinking that you compound archers practise shoot to a 100 yards or more?? What is the average/recommended practise shoot distance?? And what is the shortest and longest?
Any info will be MUCH appreciated. I have read a ton of stuff on the internet about beginning down the compound road, but it all conflicts, and there doesn't seem to be anyone addressing the rudimentary basics - and that's I want to know.
Thanx muchly.
i shoot every once in a while, i used to be steadfast in recurve but i find compound bows are easier to pull back.
....thats really all i gotta say lol
I am not an *expert*, but here goes:
A trained archer can easily shoot 300 yards with a compound-bow.
Actual effect, power and accuracy all depend on the materials and construction of the compound-bow in question. There are great variations in the types of compound-bows in use today, depending mainly on intended range and force of impact.
Don't do it Greg. I have a bad feeling. Contrary to the abuse you get here, which I feel you sometimes encourage, I think that we want you on that wall*. We NEED you on that wall*. *Wall being the Queen Archives. Perhaps a couple rounds of Tennis would be better and no one will get too seriously injured.
Thanks for the advice and info. It's appreciated.
300 yards sounds excessive to me. ARE YOU SURE?????
Can a person even SEE a target from 300 yards that isn't just a blurred blob on the horizon???

You know, kids shouldn't be playing with bows and arrows. Those arrows could 'echo' back and hit your ass. And stop spamming.
300 yards does seem pretty far away. Maybe that is the range but not what you would find useful. And then there is always the curvature of the earth to consider, and cows.
I dunno much about Compound vs Recurve, but the drywall gang, electricians and plumbers on lunch break at my house today held a very informative debate on flathead arrows vs mechanical, which pop out extra blades for extra lethality. The drywallers favor mechanized blades, no surprise there. They say you'll spend about 7 pounds ($14 USD) per mechanized arrowhead. So aim carefully.
Greg, hope this wasn't something subtle about the slings & arrows of outrageous fortune?!
