So, I don't know if this poor efford should even ve called Queen, but 1. Cosmos Rockin' Just about the most unoriginal song ever, Status quo meets ZZ-top meets Chuck Berry, and the lyrics are just so horrible that you start to feel co-ashame. 2. Time To Shine One of the best songs in this album, actually very good, but I'm afraid it would have needed some Freddie's 'A kind of magic' treatment in order to be commercially succesfull hit. Levyn parhaita biisejä, mutta olisi tarvinnut Freddien 'A kind of magic' käsittelyä tullakseen todella tarttuvaksi. Ehkä jos Freddie eläisi tästä olisi voinut tulla hitti. 3. Still Burnin' (4:04) This is standard Whitesnake blues-rock song from early 80'ies, could have easily been from "Come and get it" or from "Saints & sineers". 4. Small (4:39) Acoustic song that has nothing original. 'Everybody needs some peace and quiet' and so on so makes you think that this is actually remake of some Roger songs *Happines' meets ' Everybody hurst sometimes'. 5. Warboys (3:18) Well, is this overleft of Bad Co album? Well, Brian plays well, but is this new 'Gimme the prize' or something. Nothing catchy, just mindless nonsense. 6. We Believe (6:08) Well, new 'foreign sand'. A kind of epic song that would have needed Freddie's 'A kind of magic' to be catchy. The lyrics are some kind of repeat of 'The miracle' lyrics, without any humour. 7. Call Me (2:59) Well, this is 'Let your heart rule your heart' meets 'On my way up' just not as good as either of them. The line "Call me if you need my love" is used countless times. Somehow this reminds me of Cheap Trick, maybe this is copy of 'If you want my love' or some other of their hits. 8. Voodoo (4:27) Standard blues. Reminds Eric Clapton. But in this album this sounds as almost original idea, so one of the best songs. 9. Some Things That Glitter (4:03) Journey of 70'ies? Or maybe this is just a copy of Nazareth's 'Love hurts'? 10. C-lebrity (3:38) The lyrics are horrible. Unfortunately, I start to understand why this was relaeased as single. Awful song, but commercially this album has nothing better to offer. 11. Through The Night (4:54) Well, this is OK song, but very forgottable. You don't remember it after you listen the album, maybe because you just remember all the horrible ones. 12. Say It's Not True (4:00) This is by far the best song in this album. The only one to have good arrangement and fine lyrics. 13. Surf's Up . . . School's Out ! (5:38) Well, since they don't come up with good lyrics, they just recycle old ones? The song is just Aerosmith copy, it has parts fron many Aerosmith songs from 'Sweet Emotions' to the 'Livin in the edge' and the harmonica sound finalises the Aerosmith feel. 14. Small reprise (2:05) The second best song of the album. As an instrumental this actually works. Nice ending. Lyrically this is the worst 'Queen' album ever Musically it is the second worst after Flash Gordon, however Flash Gordon had more musical originality and ambition Hot space was just genious masterpiece compared to this |

I dont get the problem a lot of people seem to have with the lyrics of C-lebrity? They really arent that bad - nothing complex, but they work fine. If you were looking for something groundbreaking, then you're looking in the wrong place - Cosmos Rocking is just a daft, fun rock n roll song, why not just enjoy the daftness! Its meant to be fun! |

This is not a criticism, just a question. Why do so many people state how long they have been a fan when writing a review? Is the opinion of fan of 28 years greater than that of a fan of 5 years? Just curious. Carry on. |
timantt1 19.09.2008 11:33 |
"Is the opinion of fan of 28 years greater than that of a fan of 5 years? Just curious. Carry on" No, I am just an old man, I guess I should have not mention it. Everyone's opinion is just as important. The younger fans just may change their view, the old dog doesn't. Anyway, my problem with this album is not 'Queen likeness', since Queen always played whatever, that's OK. The problem is not Paul either, I have all 6 Bad co records that Paul made, and I love 'straight shooter' and 'Bad co', and even 'Rought diamonds'. The problem is that this album has nothing new or original to offer, all Queen and Bad company records are better than this. |

I've only heard one song, but C-lebrity gave us a new guitar lick that I can't get out of my head. And that solo, while only 2 measures, is smoking!!! I hadn't heard both of those previously. Perhaps you can tell me where that has been done before? BTW, I've been a fan for 31 years. Scoreboard. |

(REAL deep voice.) For behold. I am God. I have been around since the Great Big Bang. I not only KNOW Queen + Paul Rodgers...but I created them. Let it be known from this day on that "The Cosmos Rocks" is a splendor of a masterpeice. Twa la, la. |

ok, respect for your ideas. but I agree only if we want to compare CR with others Q albums, but it isn't so! it's a brand new project with the only mistake of the band name "Q+PR": that Q doesn't fit with the glory of the past album. in particular way the comapare with the last Q album MIH is devasting ! but CR is a new project, nothing comparable with old ones. personally I like Cosmos rockin' cos splash in a pure rock way into the new materials following; I agree with Time to shine, I like We believe, a good song but lacks of "Freddie touch", it's too much Brian song in extended "no-one but you style"; ... ... ... C-lebrity is that kind of song that the most I listen the more I like it; a good rock song, correctly articulated in words and music, and a modern lyrics from Roger. If you hear Led-Zep's "Wantom song" then you will agree it's a respectable song, even not that original... but a good one. My taste is uncomfortable with blues pieces in this album, but I have to admit that Paul is a good very good singer, not a Champions... but good and he express the best with this kind of songs. Overall, a standard album, not a masterpiece but enjoyable if listened from the start to the end. Enjoy your life ! bye Cla |

28 years bollocks you are not a fan of Queen if you have not been a fan since at least 1974 like me Ha Ha For the record I don't get why some people don't like this album its got the best guitar work since ADATR i didn't expect it to be this good and its better a well pleased fan of 34 and a half years!! Can I just bare my arse and fart in the face of all QPR haters this pathetic crowd are really pissing me off now!! Oh I hear you all say we are entitled to our opinion well of course you are but for now take it and stick it where the sun don't shine!! Move On!! |

Move On!!I take it you're the voice of reason from the "QPR supporters" group who are so open to voicing personal opinions? Just a quick question though... What if I don't find Brian's guitar work to be the only thing I judge an album by? What if I expect originality, fresh ideas, good lyrics, good tunes in general? Are those all irrelevant in comparison to Brian's guitar work? I admit I've only been a fan for half as long as you, so perhaps I've not yet advanced to your level of expertise. |

Dear Tero I am no more the voice of reason for true Queen fans than you are for those who feel that Queen is there property and how dare Brian and Roger continue to use the moniker that they helped create and they played a massive part in establishing. The next comments are to all of those who are slagging QPR and TCR and honestly not a personal attack on any one individual. You bought the records yet they didn't ask you if you liked the idea of asking Paul to jump on board how dare they eh? i guess you feel they are jumping all over poor Freddies grave don't you? You don't like it your choice but in this democratic forum as Album & Ticket sales will show you are in the minority, I think thats what you find hardest to deal with so you try and shout that little bit louder. I owe Queen big time! Music has been my life because of them. In the 70's & 80's had Freddie farted in a bucket and released it I would have bought it and the 12 inch remix and played it until the grooves had worn out. To now hear a 61 year old Brian May playing some of the best riffs of his life and Roger in love with drumming again is like viagra to my ears! I will cut you a deal my last post on this subject I accept and respect your view although I don't agree with it now please respect mine. |

Hey Rich Tea, I appreciate your feelings about the new album and Queen in general, but must take issue with a few things. "You bought the records yet they didn't ask you if you liked the idea of asking Paul to jump on board how dare they eh? i guess you feel they are jumping all over poor Freddies grave don't you?" The rational people don't like the album because they think it sucks compared to Queen's output with Freddie. Not that Tero needs defending, but I don't think his quarrel is with Paul Rodgers, it's with paint by numbers music, which is something Queen could never be accused of even on their patchiest 80s albums. "I owe Queen big time! Music has been my life because of them. In the 70's & 80's had Freddie farted in a bucket and released it I would have bought it and the 12 inch remix and played it until the grooves had worn out. To now hear a 61 year old Brian May playing some of the best riffs of his life and Roger in love with drumming again is like viagra to my ears!" That paragraph could have been written by me. Not now, but maybe 15 years ago. We're all here because we love Queen, but not unconditionally in some of our cases. In my mind, perfectionists that Brian and Roger (in the studio for Roger, maybe not live), there was never going to be any doubt about their playing. It was going to be about the songs. And sorry, Paul Rodgers has a lot of hits, but he is 20 leagues below Freddie Mercury as a writer, and 1000 leagues below as a creative force. To me, Bad Company was a cliche-filled band that was perfectly suited to American AOR radio with their big sound and dumb lyrics. Queen was an eccentric British band that sang about bicycle races, high class call girls and lolling about on the British seaside. They had a lightness to them that a Paul Rodgers can't provide, and for the record, that man has a wonderful voice at any age. It's not blasphemy to suggest that he's ill suited for a band that wishes to be Queen, but obviously isn't because they are lacking an enormous singing/songwriting element that Paul Rodgers can't provide. IMHO. By the way, for Pieter MC who asked "Is the opinion of fan of 28 years greater than that of a fan of 5 years?" No. To understand what Queen were though at their creative peak? Absolutely. A person who became a Queen fan in the 90s wouldn't have experienced when Queen was fresh musically, in the moment, and lack a comparison. When "corporate" rock was happening, and Queen was doing a song like Mustapha as an album opener, that shit was daring. Same as their choices for singles. All over the map stylistically, it's a miracle that they were from the same band. When the 80s hit they'd settled in and lost their edge and still had some great songs on some dicey albums, but were nowhere near the force (on record or live) that they were as a rock band in the 70s. |

At least it's comforting to know the extremists are in the minority on both sides of the QPR issue. Rich Tea wrote: You bought the records yet they didn't ask you if you liked the idea of asking Paul to jump on board how dare they eh? i guess you feel they are jumping all over poor Freddies grave don't you?At least in my opinion it isn't quite that simplistic. Yes, we all know that Brian and Roger have the legal right to use the Queen name, and they can choose whoever they want to play with. We also know that everybody has a right to criticise the album on its own merit. I don't get any kicks out out of Brian May's guitar playing alone, so there isn't much for me, and I'm guessing I'm not alone. I think Freddie's grave comes into question when the fans here at QZ are downplaying Freddie's significance in an effort to justify the 2-man lineup using the Queen name. Rich Tea wrote: You don't like it your choice but in this democratic forum as Album & Ticket sales will show you are in the minority, I think thats what you find hardest to deal with so you try and shout that little bit louder. The amateur psychologist in me also says something about all those QPR fans who don't want to hear the negative opinions on this message board. Someone who's confident about his own opinion doesn't mind hearing opposing viewpoints, and demanding others to shut up is a sign of not wanting to admit those same things to yourself. Rich Tea wrote: I owe Queen big time! Music has been my life because of them. I have to say, I think timantt1's review is absolutely spot on - there is nothing original or particularly interesting on this album. To me, the majority of it, to me, sounds like a Paul Rogers middle of the road blues rock album kinda thing to me. I wasn't expecting a Queen album, since this is not Queen, but there is nothing particularly interesting about this at all. When listening to each song, I recognized the 'type' of song fairly on in each track, no surprises, the majority of it is just rock by numbers. Like the topic starter says, alot of it reminds me of other songs by other people. I enjoyed 'Voodoo', but like the starter said, it just sounds like something Clapton would do. "Say It's Not True" is probably the highlight of the album for me, and I realize that this is the most typically Queen sounding track on the album, but do not confuse my general dislike of the album to this album to a dislike of Paul Rogers. Paul Rogers has a phenomenal voice, and is a fantastic performer; the Q + PR gig I saw a few years back was amazing and I enjoyed both Queen and Paul's material. However, I just don't think the writing in this album is up to much. Simple as that. |

Being a Queen fan for 17 years I may confirm: Cosmos Rockin' is horrible song. I don't know what's wrong with Warboys and C-Lebrity, for me its lyrics works fine, but Cosmos Rockin' as horrible as Rollin' Over or Slow Down from Brian's solo albums. Seems like Roger is more 'queenie' than Brian is on this album. Since The Call Dr May's songwriting/producing abilities haven't become better, I'm afraid. Though guitar playing still rocks. |
