OOOPPS!!! I SO HAPPILY STAND CORRECTED!!! The Cosmos Rocks does indeed rock! NEW RULE: NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER listen to an album sampler again. All it did was showcase dull moments of grand songs, convincing me that songs like We Believe and Some Things That Glitter Turn To Gold were going to be crap. NOTHING could be further from the truth! Wow! I'm still not warmed up to the opening track which reminds me of a song I loathe, "If the house is a rockin, don't come a knockin", and so that with the preview of songs that sampled the worst possible places and my having heard the you tube tracks individually available, which once again was something short of complete, and so I felt the uncanny truth was Queen's first dud. After hearing the album, courtesy of Japan's HMV online service making it available right now for download, I am eating my words and realize that this is exactly what was promised, PR's Blues style mixed with PLENTY of Queen elements the preview showed very little of, and even some of the other lyrics are fairly good. It's a bit organic like Back To The Light, and Brian is all about expanding his blues guitar from one blues track per album on average to a sudden half or slight majority even of blues influence, and he does it better than I think I have heard him. Paul Rodgers is exceptional, winning over a non-enthusiast of blues by the sheer perfection of his vocals which make it too good to not like, and with May's accompanyment this album seems to promise me early on that it's going to be the best blues I've heard since Zeppelin at least. The Red Special sound along with Queen choruses are classic Queen, and the drumming has tight Roger moments when it stands out, but Roger seems to be less prominent for most of the album. Taylor's writing style clearly gives the resistance to the PR/BM blues collaboration, and that Queen-ish Taylor sound ultimately is what makes it so unique a blues album. It does rock here and there, it also structures certain tracks in a very Queen/rock design that the blues works within, but it still seems to favor Paul Rodgers style a bit more than RT and BM, but certainly not as much as the stupid teaser led me to believe. It reminds me of a sort of Electric Fire meets Back To The Light, with an odd connection I keep drawing to Whitesnake for some reason. It must incorporate similar blues/rock structure or something. All I know is that I feel foolish for my earlier remarks. This album after one full play is worthy of Queen and it certainly continues a partnership that freaking WORKS! Ignore the sampler, buy the album, and thank the maker that we have Q + PR to give us more treasure in this legendary epic that Taylor and May keep alive and moving forward. I was wrong and nothing pleases me more! |

That stupid We Believe preview, the incomplete and crappy version of Still Burnin, and the dull sounding blues samples that completely hid a lively rock album loaded with Red Special guitar, Queen vocals and Rodgers singing better than I have ever heard him before, and not the worst lyrics apart from what was advertised. That is the worst 20 second sampler in history that they put on youtube. I still don't like the opening track very much, but all the weak sounding songs were lame points isolated from Incredible music they didn't play a peep of. WE Believe sounded like trash on the sample. It's actually a DAMNED good song. The Still Burnin, Call Me, and Time To Shine videos are so incomplete. They make it sound like short, repetitive cheese and only the full recording puts together a finely tuned song. The person or persons responsible for the Youtube tracks and sampler are not doing Queen any good I assure you. |

Yeah this is one reason I'm annoyed with that idiot who put all the 30 second previews of the album on Youtube. Previews can actually make things worse and give people the wrong impression. |

Ameriqueen: I was puzzled by your previous topic, thinking that you've listened to the complete album. Though I must say I can't blame you, the previews got me real scared until I bought the album from HMV Japan. I admit that the album isn't the best one ever to bear the name Queen on it but it's definitely an album worthy of a 17-year wait. I can say love each and every song on the album, some less and some more, but I love them all. Most surprisingly I think my favorite so far has been Time To Shine, which I thought I'd hate when I heard the previews. I'm sure I'll even love the album more when I receive the CD and the LP and will be able to listen to it in full fidelity... PS- I still couldn't get used to the "YEEEAAHHHH"s in Surf's Up...School's Out :P |

Well, I also must admit that some bits there and there are good enough on the new album but the most important thing is that Brian and Roger are touring, remembering and introducing new and old fans of Queen, although in not a way that we appreciate and like it. I personally do not like the style in which Paul Rodgers is singing famous Queen songs. It may result in tarnishing memories of how Freddie sang(converting it to the country tune slowly is leading to this point). It is hurting me and I believe, others are being hurt too. Unfortunately in Poland his star is not as bright as it used to be however for the couple of years it have been blinding us, inspiring and thanks to that our life had more colour than it would be without his voice. IF f.e QPR would put on "The Cosmos Rocks" a few unreleased outstanding tracks with Freddie on main vocals than everybody would after seconds realise who created style for Queen and can sing a song in many different ways(just look at the different genres that appeared on Queen discography). No one today and even a 16 years ago at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert could not sing a song the way in Freddie had sang it. He remains unbeatable till this day and I believe that he will remain forever. I do not wish to rouse hate in somebody. I will try as one of the Queenzone members said: treat Q+PR as a brand new group. |

I guess you've learned a lesson about waiting till you're in a position to give a full review before jumping in the deep end with comments! This is what I fear a heck of a lot of music journalists do! But still - no harm done! Looking forward to hearing it myself when the online store are able to send it to me! |
