-Cosmos Rockin'- A great fun opening to the album. Some will most than likely complain that it's kind of like a Status Quo song, but I disagree. It's a fun tribute to rock n' roll, and if this is not opening song of the tour then I will be very surprised. -Time To Shine- Initially when I heard the snippet on the radio I did not like it. After hearing the complete song, easily one of the highlights of the album for me. Very catchy, and it easily gets stuck in your head. Certainly very different sounding than anything they have done before. -Still Burnin'- Yes it samples WWRY, but it works in the context of the song. Not the best song on the album, but it does feature a great solo from Brian. -Small- I loved this track. For me one of the best tracks on the album. -Warboys- I really liked Paul's solo version, but this is much better than that. Some nice guitar and drumming on this track. -We Believe- What can I say? 6 minutes of Brian's Soapbox. If it had gone on any longer I was fully expecting to hear lyrics about snails and slugs in the next verse. Easily the poorest song on the album. -Call Me- When I first heard the clips of this I thought WTF, and was not sure. After hearing the entire song I love it. It's a simple, fun song that features some very 70s Queen guitar from Brian. -Voodoo- Everybody from the QOL listening party seemed to dislike this track. For me it was one of the standout tracks of the album. Some of the best guitar I have heard from Brian in a long time. Very bluesy, but a great great track. -Some Things That Glitter- Another very good track. Must go back and listen to it again in a moment. -C-lebrity- This track has grown on me since I first heard it on Al Murray. I could live without the samples, but it's a pretty decent track overall. -Through The Night- Another great track, very Bad Company'ish. -Say It's Not True- Actually skipped over this when listening to the album as I know what it sounds like. -Surf's Up . . . School's Out !- This is a Roger track thru and thru. People from the listening party thought it was the best track on the album, but I thinking that they were probably drunk by that point. It's a good track, but by no means is it the best. -Small reprise- Some nice guitar from Brian. Good way to close the album. I was very afraid as to what this album was going to be like. I should not have worried, it has exceeded my expectations by a long shot. |

I pretty much agree with everything Pieter said. He liked "Small" a lot more than me, though. I need to listen to it again, I think. "We Believe" is so Brian's Soapbox. ;-P "Voodoo" was a pleasant surprise. I thought it would be too bluesy for my liking. I'm still trying to work out what my favorite is. Overall, I love it! :-) |

I couldn't wait any longer so I picked up the download from Japan too: Album is FANTASTIC!! Cosmos Rocks - energetic and fun....nice to hear Brian so prominent as well Time to Shine - interesting quality track Still Burning - such a heavy rocker - love the drum intro too - Roger has a great drum sound on this album Small - better than I expected after the previews Warboys - love the beginning and at first listen I wasn't sure about the rest....2nd listen much better We Believe - catchy ballad and not a sappy one Call Me - very catchy...Bri's guitar sound takes you back to the 70s Voodoo is fantastic....amazing blues feel guitar from Brian - Paul sounds great too. I could listen to this song if it was 20 minutes long Some Things That Glitter - another ballad - somewhat similar to Small - some nice piano/guitar. Roger really helps to give the ballads some punch C-lebrity - verses rock with a slower chorus...hope it gets some good airplay - brings back the edge on the album Through The Night - starts with cool Bri guitar...then gets into a "Bad Company" feel....a really good track... Say It's Not True - nice climax at the end Surf's Up....School's out - pumping beat like headlong but reminds me a bit more of Roger's No More Fun and In Charge Of My Heart...also a little bit of the "it's a beautiful day (heavy part)"....some neat effects small reprise Nice guitar work - it make you think that Small was original 7+ minutes long and this was originally the natural ending with some nice guitar Lots of Brian's great guitar work Paul's voice sounds great Roger sounds great on every single track.....haven't heard him play like that for a whole album in ages.... Now let's get it on the airwaves |

(posted on QOL, repeating it here) I love the album, and have been enjoying it immensely! It's just brilliant, and the tracks are so good yet different from each other in their own right(s). Cosmos Rockin' was a perfect way to open the album, I think. Definitely a good way to set the mood. I personally think "Time To Shine" is the weakest track out of all the songs, though it's still good mind you. I'm not too huge on the U2 sound though. Still Burnin' was pretty fun. The slide/wah-wah guitar solo makes me think of David Gilmour's guitar solo in "Take A Breath" cos of its heaviness. The WWRY bit followed by the off-beat drumming was a very nice touch. And here I was thinking they wouldn't use anything from the past! Hehe. Small is a very infectious one. I have been humming the chorus while biking to work. I just love it. Warboys indeed is very heavy compared to the earlier acoustic version I heard on that radio interview Paul did quite a while ago. Very heavy drumming here, and deep crisp backing vocals (I suspect mostly Roger here) We Believe...I'm not much into 'inspirational' ballads, but this one sticks pretty well. I think this was written as a hopeful sort of anthem for the US presidential election campaigns (which, in my mind, would be leaning more towards Mr. Barack Obama, with McCain being "the other guy" :-) ) Call Me sounds like a country-fied mash-up of 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' and 'Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon', and it works very well! I think this is the only possible instance of a Deacy amp usage here...? :-) The ending was a bit rather unexpected at first listen, hehe. I think that part was possibly what Brian was referring to when he said there were 'conversations happening in the music', so to speak. Voodoo, not much to say about it. It's very Santana-esque to me :-) Some Things That Glitter, again not much to say. I like it, and somehow it makes me think it wouldn't be out of place in Elton John's repertoire :-) C-lebrity, I don't think I could say anything positive that hasn't been said already. Certainly, it took me a while to get used to in terms of the differences between the live Al Murray version and the studio version very later on, as far as some bits went (particularly in the drumming, since I'm a drummer myself) But since I've heard this so many times, it feels a bit weird going through this when listening to the album all the way through. Am I the only one who feels that way? Through The Night is very nice. Definitely some Bad Company sounds here. I think Paul almost definitely plays the piano here. Say It's Not True...again, can't really add much that hasn't been said before. I like the (then) new heavy arrangement. Shame this is the only track that Brian and Roger have lead parts on, but that's alright. Roger's vocal FX has definitely been toned down here. Maybe this is the 're-mixed' version they meant to put out on the CD-Single? (Remember the press releases from the World Aids Day download version...) Surf's Up ... School's Out! definitely portrays, for me a very California summer type imagery. I think this would make for a very nice AMV (Anime Music Video), along with "Small" as well. I would like to do one myself, but I don't think I could muster up the courage to do such a project :-P Small reprise is a very nice, mellow way to end the album. In a way it could be like a short Track 13, but with vocals and way less of a pain to sit through, hehe :-) Overall, I'd give Cosmos Rocks 4 out of 5. |

I could not wait any longer. I pretty much agree with grantcdn. Most of these tracks are FANTASTIC!!! I really like voodoo, small, some things that glitter, through the night..We Believe is too long and Brians Soapbox. War Boys-I like how it's changed from the Paul solo version, but I still don't care for this song too much Brian May has really pulled out the guitar tricks-best in years!! Some completely new others the traditional "queen" sound. Roger Taylor--Drumming, auxillary percussion-backing vocals--all superb. Best for Last is Paul...OMG- Vocals best ever, harmonica in surf's up, piano, bass, Tambourine and who knows what else. Can't wait to see them live 3 weeks from today! Rating 4.5 out of 5 |

As Brian May has stated, these QUEEN + Paul Rodgers studio sessions produced a very 'organic' outcome. I agree. This is not the case of someone lightly stepping in Freddie Mercury's (winged) shoes - this is really a joint-venture effort. The end result is a lenghty album (total timing: 58:47) that will appeal to, and even take by surprise, most music critics. Home listeners, however, will have mixed feelings about it. 01. Cosmos Rockin' (4:13) The album starts with a 'One Vision'-like spacey intro. Then, a familiar guitar riff brings a typical rock 'n' roll - with the classic QUEEN treatment. Brian May fans will recognize his trademarks all through the song ...although this is one of Roger's. 02. Time To Shine (4:21) Up-tempo ballad showcasing Paul's vocal skills. Late '80s U2-like guitar work. 03. Still Burnin' (4:03) 'Tear It Up' 2008. Guitars, drums and choruses, and even bass and accompanying piano, in typical QUEEN style - auto-sampling included. They will rock you! 04. Small (4:39) Folk ballad. Starts as its title suggests, just acoustic guitar and vocals, and then grows thicker adding drums and a Brian Eno-like nice syntheziser background. 05. Warboys (3:17) A bombastic (no pun intended) QUEEN treatment to this Paul Rodgers solo song. Results are reminiscent of 'The Hitman'. 06. We Believe (6:09) Typical power ballad. Nothing that has not been heard before, but very nicely done. 07. Call Me (2:59) QUEEN + Paul Rodgers go country! The song has a nice harmonized guitar solo - Deacy amp sound and everything. 08. Voodoo (4:27) Bluesy jam in the Eric Clapton vein... 09. Some Things That Glitter (4:03) 'Butterfly' (remember Brian's piano number from THE MAGIC YEARS?) revisited! Beautiful ballad. 10. C-lebrity (3:37) The heaviest track in the album, full of Roger Taylor's influences. Same as the single version (but remastered). 11. Through The Night (4:54) Another undoubtely Brian-penned piano ballad. It could be in THE MIRACLE. Tasteful. 12. Say It's Not True (3:59) QUEEN + PR's take on Roger's original song. And too hard they try! Same as the single version (but remastered). 13. Surf's Up . . . School's Out ! (5:51) QUEEN's 'Headlong' meets Taylor's 'No More Fun' - strange as it sounds, it does work! 14. Small - reprise (2:15) A perfect way to end the album in an emotional tone. Release date in Argentina: 2008.09.23 |

Here's my "accidental" review of The Cosmos Rocks. Cosmos Rockin': a great rock tune. When I first heard the 3-second snippet, and then read the lyrics, I was about ready to write-off this album as lame, but I'm glad I didn't. Really sets the mood for the entire album, and reminds me of 'Let Me Entertain You'. Like Pieter, I would be very surprised if this wasn't the first song of the tour. (Hypothetical writer: Roger, though he has confirmed it was his.) Time To Shine: I really like this song, even though the guitar work reminds me a little bit of The Edge. Paul really shines (!) on this track, and his voice has never sounded stronger. This was the song that got me excited about the album, and it's still an absolute highlight for me. (Hypothetical writer: probably a collaboration between Brian and Paul.) Still Burnin': reminds me a lot of Led Zeppelin (or maybe Free!). Nice bluesy rock song, with some loud drums and screaming guitar. Yeah, the 'We Will Rock You' sample is a little forced, but it hardly detracts. (Hypothetical writer: probably a collaboration between Brian and Paul.) Small: lovely ballad. Nice harmonies and some beautiful guitar work. (Hypothetical writer: Brian.) Warboys: I liked the acoustic performance Paul played on US radio a few months ago, so I was looking forward to this song, and it doesn't disappoint. I love the drums and guitar work, though the sound effects are a little overbearing. I like the backing vocals from Roger and Brian here. (Hypothetical writer: well, we know this is Paul's.) We Believe: a bit of a hamfisted attempt at sociopolitical preaching. Lengthy ballad, and I can see this being a centerpoint of the live show, but it's not one of my favorites. (Hypothetical writer: confirmed to be Paul's.) Call Me: I was surprised to see that people didn't like this one, because I think it's a nice, lighthearted bit of relief after the weighty 'Warboys' and 'We Believe'. I can assure you that it's NOT country, but acoustic rock played jauntily, which is hardly a bad thing. Definitely reminds me of 'Let Your Heart Rule Your Head'. The harmonies are sublime. Favorite line: "I'm gonna settle down / Find myself a wife or two". (Hypothetical writer: confirmed to be Paul's, though I wouldn't be surprised if Brian had a say in the arrangement.) Voodoo: a nice, swampy blues song. Sounds like something that came from the crossroads. Nice to hear Brian playing some tasty blues licks after all these years. (Hypothetical writer: probably a collaboration between Brian and Paul.) Some Things That Glitter: mid-tempo piano-based ballad that I quite like. I could even see this being the next single from the album. The harmonies are lovely here, and while Paul's voice really suits the song, I would have liked to hear Brian sing this one. (Hypothetical writer: Brian. It has his fingerprints all over it.) C-lebrity: I always liked this riff, but the lyrics made me cringe. They still do a bit, but I've warmed to them a little more. I've gotten the chorus stuck in my head many times, which makes it a perfect candidate for a single. Shame no one's doing anything about it, though... Good to hear the band rockin' out after all these years. (Hypothetical writer: confirmed to be Roger's.) Through The Night: another nice ballad, though probably the least memorable song on the album for me. Not that it's bad, but I just can't remember anything about it. (Hypothetical writer: Brian.) Say It's Not True: I still prefer the stripped-back acoustic version from the 46664 show in 2003, but this bombastic re-recording is nice, too. The only lead vocals that Roger and Brian get on the album, and I'm okay with that. (Hypothetical writer: confirmed to be Roger's, but we knew that anyway.) Surf's Up . . . School's Out !: this title scared me, to be honest. I was expecting a really cheesy amalgam of the Beach Boys and Alice Cooper, but I'm surprised to say that this is my favorite song of the album. Nice riff, and the song really rocks out. I like hearing Roger's voice on the choruses. The occasional timpani blasts are great, as are Roger's cries of "YEAHHHHH!!!!!", and I'm not sure what the instrument at 1:06 is, if it's a harmonica or a distorted guitar. I can see this being a staple of the live show, especially toward the end of the show, toward the encores. I love the line about a "criminal urge to twist and shout" – so Roger! (Hypothetical writer: Roger, through and through.) small reprise: gorgeous guitar outro with some ethereal, swirling vocals. Sounds like a mash-up of 'Last Horizon' and 'Bijou'. I could see this being part of Brian's nightly solo. (Hypothetical writer: Brian.) Final thoughts: well, they did it. I had set my expectations pretty low for this a few months ago, but as soon as I started to hear snippets over the past few weeks, I raised the bar a lot, and they didn't disappoint. I'm happy that it's just the three of them playing the instruments, instead of a load of backing musicians; it definitely feels more intimate and rough around the edges. Paul proves that he's still an amazing vocalist, and I'm glad they gave him the lead on all the songs, as opposed to switching between the three of them. I would have liked to have known who played what on the album, but part of the fun is to guess who plays what. I think Brian plays a lot of the bass, which is surprising, because he rarely played bass in Queen. I'm sure having John on bass would have made the lines more fluid, but the chunky distorted sound works well for these songs. I'm also happy that keyboards (and synths) are kept to a minimum throughout, and that the harmony vocals are still there in full force. Overall, this is a great album, and definitely worth the wait. It doesn't feel overlong, like many albums from the 1990s did, where they tried to adapt to the formula of CDs and cram as much music on as they could. The album is nicely paced, and the sound is tremendous; everything sounds authentic and real. Great job, Q+PR! Now, your job is to promote the hell out of this album, and play as many tracks from it live. Guaranteed performances are 'Cosmos Rockin'', 'Warboys', 'We Believe', 'Some Things That Glitter', 'C-lebrity', 'Say It's Not True', and 'Surf's Up'. I'd love to hear 'Still Burnin'', 'Time To Shine', and 'Call Me', the latter of which I could see being a nice singalong for the audience. |

It's always the same with these people. Fuck the music or cinema reviews from any magazine. I hate them. And as most of us do, when I read a negative review of any movie or music, I know I will like it. By the way, just listened to the album for the 2nd time. Glorious. Don't know what song I would throw out, really ! I like ALL the songs. Small is fantastic, as is Call Me, Glitter, Voodoo ... I've read some negative reactions here to We Believe ... I don't care if it is a Bri's Soapboax of 6 minutes , because Queen's essence is floating all over this song, and I love it. I'm starting to think that the weakest song is C-lebrity, and I also like that song since its first airing at the Al Murray show! And I like to mention that the song that has caught my atention the most is Surf's Up School's Out ... wanna listen to it more and more times, there's something special in it Many tks, QPR, many tks for this new music; new joy brought to my life |

It's a wonderful album. It's given me goosebumps. It's made my eyes mist up. It's had me tapping my feet and bouncing my head. It's had songs that at first I was indifferent towards grow on me. It has surprised and delighted me. It does everything I want new music to do to me. These boys have nothing to be ashamed of. I'm very proud of them, and I'm proud to call myself a Q+PR fan. I would play this for anyone who was open to listen. |

I have listened to the album many times now and here is my opinion: It's a nice rock album with catchy tunes which is fun to listen to. It won't make my top ten favourite albums but it's much better than many other albums that have been released in the last years - and Paul Rodgers is one great singer. I cannot help but listen to this album as a Queen fan. I think you do not really need to be a Queen fan to compare Cosmos Rocks to Queen. After all, it has "Queen" printed on it. In 2004 Paul Rodgers said what impressed him about Queen was that they always went to the other direction than the one you expected. And that is exactly what is not happening on Cosmos Rocks. It's an average album with nice tunes, a great singer and some cool guitar parts. It is dripping of stereotypes. Call me if you need my love, the stars are shining bright, it's time for peace... "We Believe" reminds me of "The Voice", "Something That Glitters" sounds like Elton John, Surfs Up.. reminds me of "It's A Beautiful Day - reprise", "Cosmos" sounds like Stray Cats meet Status Quo, "Through The Night" reminds me of Sting etc etc etc. This never happened with a Queen album - the songs were always new , original and unheard - even Delilah. Where is the surprise element, where are the carefully built guitar harmonies, where is the sophisticated production? And where is the sense of humour? The frivolous fun element? The playful experimenting with genres and styles? Is it wrong to expect any of these essential Queen elements on a record that has "Queen" printed on the sleeve? In 1990 Brian May said that many groups name "us as their influence now". I think nobody will ever name QPR as their influence because it's just not the same category. It's not a continuation, it's a side project. Let's not forget that Paul Rodgers was touring and Brian May was finishing his PhD while the album was recorded. For the side project of 3 great musicians, who meet in their spare time to jam in a studio and record some tracks, Cosmos Rocks is a great result. For me as a Queen fan it marks the end of a band I loved for over 2 decades. I miss Queen so much more on Cosmos Rocks than I missed them on the tour. The Queen is dead Long live QPR :-) |

Like you guys I couldn't stand the thought of an available legal download while my album would arrive on tuesday. So I downloaded it and have listened to the album four times now. When I heard the early snippets I raised an eyebrow or two. But this album is GREAT! Appreciation: I think it's a colourful album, lot of moods and styles. Great playing by all of the guys, love the fact that it's original. It's not Queen, but Queen + Paul Rodgers, so the sound is new, but I like it! I think they did a tremendeous job. Very strong first and last portion of the album! Criticism: In general, I love the harder-edge stuff and the one-off tracks (Time to shine, Small, Call me). But the power/piano ballads are the weaker parts in my opinion. I also noticed that I like the first and last portion of the album, the middle section is weaker except for Call Me. Oh ... and I'm definitely not a fan of Paul's lyrics. 01) Cosmos Rockin'; Nice rocker, is this really Roger's? Normally, back in the Queen days, the writer's vocals are louder in the mix of the backingvocals. So, yes it could be Roger, but also Brian if you ask me. Hope they will open the shows with this one! 02) Time To Shine; has grown on me since the first airing, like it a lot nowadays! 03) Still Burnin'; not original if you ask your hardcore Queen fan, but I like this song a lot. Very catch chorus too! Good one Bri ;-). As a drummer, I like the drums and shifts a lot. 04) Small: One of my favourites! Catchy chorus, nice guitars, this is the only song that makes me wonder 'How would this have sounded if Freddie was still alive'. I love this song. 05) Warboys: Didn't like the acoustic bit we already heard, but after it's Queen treatment, I think this actually a fantastic song! Nice!! Great guitars again and good backing vocals! 06) We Believe: QUEEN MEETS LIONEL RICHIE??? YUCK!!! I think the chorus is catchy, but overall this is just TOO CORNY for Queen. Ow, and what's with the Palabras De Amor reprise? Did you hear the solo and the last part? It really resembles Palabras De Amor. Ah well, never liked that track too :-p 07) Call Me: Pure fun!!! Nice little original track, love it! They should play that acoustic on stage with only the three of them! Like it, I even think this is a possible hit. 08) Voodoo: The snippet made me feel this was gonna be a boring track that I would normally stick. But I actually like the vocals, even the lyrics ;-). It resembles the Impromptu that the band played during the '86 tour ;-). 09) Some Things That Glitter: Not a ballad lover, but it's quite good. 10) C-lebrity: Roger roger roger ... he has some outstanding contributions to this album. More original stuff than Brian's actually. Normally, I don't like Roger's solostuff, but with Queen he always manages to deliver some golden songs! Way to go Rog!!! 11) Through The Night: Remembers me of other bands, not very original. But Brian's playing is just: WOW! 12) Say It's Not True: Liked the stripped down version better, but I do like the guitar ending. Great song by Roger. Pity they use all the synths in the first verse. 13) Surf's Up...School's Out: Great Roger track, possibly the most 'Queen-like' track on the album. Play this one live! Brian is still playing his ass off, unbelievable. Roger is tighter than ever, Paul singing is outstanding! 9 out of 10 for me now let's listen to it A-GAIN! woohoo Greetings, a happy and satisfied Queen + Paul Rodgers fan |

Certainly, Queen+PR is not Queen, and your mistake is that you expect a new Queen album, which is impossible. Paul is not Freddie, mind you, and this is very good that he is not trying to be him. This is clever and rewarding. I remember when INXES found a new singer who looked like Hatchens (wonder if I've spelled the name correctly?) and tried to sing like him. This was silly and much inferior and just repulsive. Where is the band with this unfortunate singer? A flop. I think it is wise of the guys not to try to imitate Queen. And I am happy that they have reemerged on the musical scene and I will be able to see my dear May and Roger again. Paul included. |
vadenuez 13.09.2008 02:29 |
I agree, but sadly that's the main problem. It's not Queen, yet they still want to be Queen, so they've condemned themselves to be measured by Queen standards. I've just finished listening to TCR and must admit that I found it better than I expected, at least as a side project (we still don't know if they'll record another in the future), but the only real Queen element here is the red special. Brian and Roger's vocals are too spare to give it an old times feel and PR adds too much of his own personality to the music. The album has quality but lacks nerve. It would've been easier to them to be "Rodmaytay" or something like that and give us a great rock n roller, but they decided to play safe and only time will tell what will become out of this venture in the end. In the meantime, things could have been this way: May, Taylor and Rodgers' new album rocks! Instead, it'll be more like: Queen+PR's new album rocks... but not like old Queen did. |

I have to agree with YV, her reply is spot on. I listened to the album with an open mind, and believe me after being a Queen fan almost half my life I really wanted to love it, but the fact is, I just find it painfully average. I appreciate that it is not Queen, and is indeed a whole new animal, but with 50% of Queen in there, I was expecting at least a little magic that is evident in almost every album they have collaborated on in the past. Ah well, nevermind, at least I still have 20 odd previous albums to continue to enjoy, this is very much a listen and discard sort of album for me. G. |

I just gave it my first listen, start to finish. I want to like it, but it's just average. Able players and able singers, but the songs just don't do it for me. It's not that they're even bad songs, but I was listening to the album with my nephew and towards the end we both looked at the tracklist and he says to me 'I can't even remember what half of these songs sounded like'. Great moments on there, but a lot of the time I could only sit there thinking 'gee I wish Brian had sung this'. Or Roger, depending on the circumstance. Paul Rodgers is wasted on a lot of the tracks. Sounds far better on the ones I'd already heard; C-Lebrity and Say It's Not True. In my view it isn't a bad album at all, it's just average. I reckon a lot of it will be great live material, however. Songs are a different beastie live, should be great (for those of you who live in countries that are blessed with visits from decent bands..... ) |

For me as a Queen fan it marks the end of a band I loved for over 2 decades. I miss Queen so much more on Cosmos Rocks than I missed them on the tour. The Queen is dead Long live QPR :-)This is my exact opinion as well. I was affraid that we would hear a lot of one dimensional rock songs. That luckily didnt happen completely and i can appreciate some tracks. But i don't have a wow feeling overall at all. I hear some nice guitarwork from Brian. But there is no daring in trying really new things. Average songs, average production, average playing (drums, piano and basstrack), Paul's singing is ok, but is doing a lot of the same, he doesnt show new sides of his voice. His voice is just not so versatile. I was really wondering how layered harmonies would have sound combined with Roger's, Brian's and Paul's voice. I haven't found it. This album won't hurt anybody but also won't give me goosebumbs. Maybe it had to grow on me, but so far I agree with above. Oh yes, the cliche's are soooo corny. Peace on earth, call me if you want love and so on, terrible. And then the line: Once i loved a butterfly.. COME ON! It fucks up the whole song |

My expectations for studio material were low -- I have never expected another News of the World -- so perhaps that's why I am not disappointed at the stuff I've heard so far. While I'm still interested in hearing what Brian and Rog can do with a new singer in the studio I've discovered though that I'm not that interested in listening to PR singing the older songs. It's not that he is bad -- quite the opposite -- it just doesn't do anything for me to hear him sing Bo Rap or AOBTD. I mean i was already bored with Fred singing TYMD, WWRY etc., why would I want to hear someone else do them ;) |

Now that I've heard the album I actually like 'Say it's not true' but only because the other tunes are rather forgettable, allowing room for even mediocre tunes like SINT to shine. BM's guitar-work is always a pleasure to hear, but that's about it for me. |

Not sure if I can do track by track, but I'll have a go. 1. Cosmos Rocks - Less cheesy than I expected. Lyrics are silly, but I'm confident it's KNOWINGLY silly and deliberately tongue in cheek. 2. Time to shine no, skipping on 4. Small - I like this. Chilled, relaxing, a bit summer-y. Doesn't claim to be something it's not, but nice melody. 5. Warboys - Wouldn't have expected a Duran Duran cover, but there you go. Not that keen, unless they use Simon Le Bon getting drowned in the video. 7. Call Me - See Small, which is not to say it's a retread of the same idea. 8. Voodoo - Love the guitar work, Brian clearly going back to his blues/Hendrix roots, presumably inspired by working with Paul. 10. C-lebrity - Growing on me, mainly due to the riff. Don't like the audience noise being switched on and off - the point is made lyrically. 12. Say It's Not True - Nice song, well arranged and performed. 13. Surf's Up...School's Out - Again, knowingly cheesy, likeable song, but not sure it's quite the brilliant standout track I'd seen it described as. 14. Small (reprise) - Odd - it's not THAT good a tune that it derserves a reprise that takes it nowhere new. |

I listened to the album last night, and it doesn't exactly make me wanna go to the stores in a hurry. Here's the short notes I can remember from it 12 hours later... 1) Status Quo opening 2) A U2 rip-off 3) Bad Company with a WWRY sample 7) Annoying country music 8) Harmless Studio Jam 9) A nice enough ballad 10) The hit single of the album! 11) Def Leppard? 12) The most Queen-like song 13) Roger Taylor solo circa 1998. Despite using the Queen name, this album has VERY little to do with Queen. Say It's Not True gets closest to a Queen song with all it's arrangements, but even that sounds like a copycat trying too hard to shove in all the Queen elements. The album is a grower alright... Grower meaning it has an acute lack of memorable tracks, and requires repeated listens to make people remember the songs even a day later... Too bad the songs are so mediocre you wouldn't even want to listen to the album again. C-Lebrity has the most memorable chorus, if you would believe that... I guess they were right to pick that song as the first single, because the others have even less hit potential. I can't even think of another single they could find from the album. If I could pick only one song from the album to my mp3 player, it would be Some Things That Glitter. I like the piano backing of the song, and this is the one song from the album that isn't a "solo song" by any of the guys, and actually makes them sound like a new band. Too bad it isn't a concert song or a single, which means the greater audience will never hear what the band sounds like. **+ (out of *****) for a harmless middle of the road effort. |

I love the album. But it's not Queen and the sound is new/different. That's cool with me as I hardly listen to the old Queen albums any more anyway. I love the fact that it's new, and I love the blues in there as that genre is one close to me. For me it beats many of the Queen albums. |
Holly2003 14.09.2008 05:07 |
Cosmos Rockin' - Not too bad actually. The sample I heard originally sounded very cheesy, but the full song is a bit of fun. Still a little sad though to see one of the world's best guitarists doing simple 12-bar. Time To Shine - Best song on the album. Some people compare it to U2 probably because of the reverb on Brian's guitar at one point -- as if David Gilmore and any number of other guitarists have never used reverb. Sounds nothing like U2. Still Burnin' - "Heavy metal gone to seed". At times, Brian's orchestrated guitars can sometimes sound awful. This is one of those moments. BTW the guy who thinks Brian is playing mistakenly out of tune here probably thinks the same of It's Late -- what an idiot. Small - quiet, nice, but forgettable. Warboys - paul's acoustic song gven the "Queen treatment". Not sure yet which song I prefer best. A good song, but not a stunner. We Believe - I like the lyrics but the music isn't that great. I keep waiting fr it to burst out into BandAid's "We are the world". Forgettable. Call Me - Not my cup of tea. Voodoo - Excellent blues-influenced song. Some Things That Glitter - Second best song on the album. Paul sounds a bit like Jackson Browne here. C-lebrity - Fairly simple and straight-forward rock. Not bad, but not going to set the world on fire either. Through The Night - Would've preferred Brian or Rog to sing this one. I don't think paul's voice suits it too well. Another forgettable song sadly. Say It's Not True - typical simple Roger song, given the Queen treatment. Nicely done, but nothing special here. Surf's Up School's Out - Odd, catchy song. probably the one song I'll find myself playing a lot. Small reprise - The point of this eludes me. |

The problem with many reviews is that they compare this to Queen, but its not. This is Queen+PR! Just wait and see, i bet most of the reviewers in the papers DO compare this with Queen. Not fair! Myself, i hoped the album would be more heavy and with great lyrcis. I must say, some of the tunes are quite bad with baad lyrcis ( like Call me). However, there for sure some tunes ( like warboys, Surfs up, Through the night, We Believe!!) i really like. What can i say.....for me this is worth buying and Paul does some nice vocals on this album. I do miss bit more Brian and some more Roger. I feel the whole album is more Paul, but what do i know. Only the group itself knows who had most of the input...... |

So ofcourse people compare this record with the past. If they would call themselves Paul, Roger and Brian or whatever, then yes, you are right, you can't compare it with what they did before. Just like Robert Plant and Jimmy Page did, make a tremendous album and let the music speak for itself without pretending that you are something that you are not. |

This thread is better than some in the General forum where people just yell at each other. I have two things to say: I do not care how old a Queen fan someone is - I think everybody on this forum has probably a well based opinion and I respect everybody's opinion. Secondly, I do not see why I cannot compare TCR with other Queen albums. Please look at the album: it has "Queen" on it. We used to compare Brian and Roger solo albums to Queen albums. When an album has "Queen" written on the sleeve the question where exactly the "Queen" part can be heard on this record is very logical. It does not mean you dismiss the album, at least I did not dismiss it. I see a huge gap between *any* previous Queen album and TCR and I have the right to mention that. As a Queen fan of 25 years I have a feeling of loss and sadness because this album is comparatively flat, uninspired, unoriginal and stereotypical. It's still a good album compared to many other albums of today. It's also very good compared to "Starfleet", for example. I respect if other fans feel different and I expect that my opinion is respected, too. @ Holly: I like Some Things That Glitter, too :) |

Right - here's my review: Cosmos Rockin: Great start to the album, a suitable tribute to traditional rock'n'roll. I'm surprised it's been classified as a Roger song (even though Roger said it himself), but it does sound like Brian had quite a big influence here. Love the shouty backing vocals ("Stop this noise" and the bit in the solo) but the Status Quo-esque backing bits are a bit strange! This will be a live favourite. Time To Shine: Brilliant song, this. One of the standout tracks on the album. Very nice guitar from Brian (especially the during the break where he plays a sort of solo), lots of delay effects in play here, as said many times before. Not at all Queen sounding but has a strong vocal from Paul. The ending to this song is brilliant, really love it. Hope they do this one live but I can't see it happening. Still Burnin': Good song, fits well in the context of the album. Starts off with a jammed intro then goes into a crunchy rock style verse. Lots of guitar harmonics here, and solid drumming from Roger. Vocally, Roger can be heard on the chorus quite audibly - which is always nice! Tasteful piano on this song, could be Paul. Nice solo from Brian, changing to a wah-wah sound half way through. The WWRY sample sounds a little forced but I wonder if they had to get permission to use it! (kidding....) Small: Very nice acoustic-styled number, this. On hearing this the first time, I thought it was going to use the same chord sequence as the verses on The Night Comes Down, but obviously not - just the first two chords :D I love the way the drums come in part way through the second verse. Brilliant vocals from Paul, the backing vocals are superb as well. Definitely one of my favourites on the whole album, and I really hope this is performed live in some way. I like the little colours that Brian adds to the song with his song, lovely! And the solo is absolutely brilliant, even though it seems a tad rushed. The little section just after the solo sounds like something on Roger's Happiness album (Loneliness, perhaps). Warboys: This song could have easily fitted on any of the first two Queen albums! The heaviest song on the record, and credit to Paul for writing something this. Lyrically, very good - people may have an issue with it but I like them. Superb drumming on this song from Roger. The actual sound of the solo is very very reminiscent of the solo played on Love Lies Bleeding (anyone agree?). Good use of samples here too, not nice on the ears but when has war ever been? We Believe: This is probably the worst song on the album - but that's not because the song itself is crap. There are three reasons why I believe (no pun intended!) this is a little weak: The song is over 6 minutes long, the lyrics are cliched and diatribe. There isn't all that much variation in the song. The thing that really saves this song for me is the superb vocal from Paul (particularly the line "A leader who can build a brand new morning"), which is magnificient. It really would have been so much better if the song was trimmed down and the lyrics were less like they were lifted from Brian's soapbox! Nice solo though from Brian and the layered guitar after this also goes with the song. Call Me: This is a radio friendly jolly acoustic song, to my ears it could have fitted on the Beatles Rubber Soul album. However the song has a definite Queen influence in that Brian gets out the old Deacy Amp and is featured quite heavily throughout! Really love the solo. As with most songs on this album, it features a very good vocal from Paul and the backing vocals are pure Queen. The chorus is probably repeated too many times for my liking, though. Don't like the ending very much, it's quite random and spoils the song a little. Otherwise, it's one of the best on the album! I hope they get this song out for the acoustic section of the live show. Voodoo: Not much to say about this. I think this is definitely one of those songs that was recorded in a couple of takes and you can tell by the sound of it that it is mainly done live. Brian plays some nice blues licks in this song. The verses are nothing to write home about but the chorus is pretty cool. Vocally the song is made for Paul's voice completely. Listen to the way Roger changes the power of his drumming half way through the song - great touch! One of the weakest songs on the album but that's not to say it's bad or average. Some Things That Glitter: Gentle piano driven ballad. Really expected more from this song, but it's still a decent song. I can't quite place my finger on it but something just doesn't seem quite right with the verses. The chorus is quite soothing though, and I do like the little colours that Brian has added once again (the backwards bit is superb) - which indicates that it's probably been written by him. In fairness, the song does get better towards the end but it takes a bit too long to get going. C-lebrity: Still hate the title of the song, but it's a good catchy commercial rock song. I won't dwell too much on this because we've been talking about it for months now. It's a better live song I think (although the backing vocals from the performance the other night left a lot to be desired!). It fits in quite well though, Paul delivers a stinging vocal on this song. Through The Night: The best song on the album for me, and I've thought this since I heard the previews. Didn't quite know what to expect at first but it's a beautiful bluesy ballad. Paul really gives it all on this song, especially towards the end. The chorus is powerful, and features some excellent guitar orchestration from Brian (and I love the xylophone keyboard bits in the choruses too!). This song will be notable for being one of the only songs not to feature any backing vocals but that doesn't really bother me too much. Brilliant solo from Brian, a bit like Nothin' But Blue. To most people this may be the one of the least memorable and there is little chance of a live performance but I absolutely adore the song. Say It's Not True: We've known about this for years now! This is a good version of a very average acoustic song that Roger performed in the past. I think it builds up too slowly but the song is still pretty decent! The best thing about the song is that everyone gets a chance to sing which isn't the case with any of the other songs. Love the strange flange effects on Roger's cymbals near the end (at one point you just hear a big "splosh" around the 3 minute mark!). Paul adds a hell of a lot to the song towards the end and the hard rock ending is great (the solo is proper Queen!). Again the ending is a little strange.... Surfs up / School's Out: Best produced song on the album by a long mile - they must have spent quite a bit of time on this! Sounds like a mix between Headlong and No More Fun. The intro sounds a bit like the start to Leaving Home Ain't Easy in places. The song is very powerful and I love the timpani as well! Lots of little samples and sound effects are scattered throughout the track. Roger's screams appear to be a bit excessive though but are good link to different sections of the song. I actually like the middle 8 more than the actual song because it just goes all mid-80s, and they should have really made more of this section. Can't see this being performed live, it'll be quite hard to recreate. |

(continued from last bit) Small reprise: Nice end to the album, just the instrumental part of the main chorus section looped for a bit. Features Brian's guitar very heavily, and is nearly purely instrumental barring a few lines of backing vocals and some from Paul. Best tracks: Through The Night, Surfs Up/Schools Out, Time To Shine, Small Worst tracks: We Believe, Voodoo, C-lebrity Overall: 8/10 |

After listening to the album quite a few times now, I might as well add my own personal likes/dislikes of the album without saying too much... 1. Cosmos Rocks: I don't like this song. Not a great start to the new album. 2/10 2. Time to Shine: I like this song. Album seems to pick up nicely here. 8/10 3. Still Burnin': I'm somewhat indifferent/leaning towards dislike. Would most likely skip this if listening in the car. 4/10 4. Small: I like this song. 7/10 5. Warboys: I don't like this song. 4/10 6. We Believe: Not too bad. 6/10 7. Call Me: Nice little song. 6/10 8. Voodoo: I don't like it. 4/10 9. Some Things That Glitter: I like it. 7/10 10. C-lebrity: Dislike it. Musically it is quite good but the chorus is horrible. If they had the "kerching"/cash register at the end that would have meant a 1 point deduction. 3/10 11. Through the Night: Again, somewhat indifferent, leaning towards dislike. 4/10 12. Say It's Not True: I liked this when I first heard it live in 2005. Album version sounds somewhat overdone. 6/10 13. Surf's Up...School's out!: I do not like this song. 4/10 14. Small reprise: Better than ending with Surf's Up... So overall that's about 5/10. Which in my opinion sounds about right. Some decent songs on the album but also some poor efforts. I think the album is overly poor lyrically. Musically it sounds quite good although over produced in places. |

The Cosmos Rocks is a great album. The first listening though it was, strange. This is no longer Queen but something else. The first songs that made me smile was "Shine" and "Surfs up..." and some that made me grin like "Warboys". Very strange feeling through and through and I can't really understand why. It's been 17 years since Freddie past away and some 13 years since I heard a new Queen song(Noone but you not included) and on my second time through the album it became clear to me that these three guys(read older men) still got it. Paul has grown into the trio becoming more than just the +. Still, I have to give it a couple of more listenings before I can give a full review of the album. But so far; It ROCKS. |

Not a great start to the new album. 2/10 1. Cosmos Rocks: A bit weird beginning with the guitar and the deep voice, but turns into a fun rock song allready one of my favourites 8/10 2. Time to Shine: I like this song. Album seems to pick up nicely here. 8/10 2. Time to Shine: Paul's vocal intro sound like almost like there is Arabian music coming, has some nice rhythm changes and an okay song. 8/10 3. Still Burnin': I'm somewhat indifferent/leaning towards dislike. Would most likely skip this if listening in the car. 4/10 3. Still Burnin': No Doubt at this moment my Favorite,Paul's lead Vocal+Brian and Roger's 2nd vocal's in the Chorus, the guitar work and the WWR sample fits so cool 9/10 4. Small: I like this song. 7/10 4. Small : This one had to grow on me,but after a few times listening i like it more and more 7/10 5. Warboys: I don't like this song. 4/10 5. Call Me: Nice little song. 6/10 7. Call Me: Has a singealong campfire to it 6/10 8. Voodoo: I don't like it. 4/10 8. Voodoo : To be honest Paul sounds nasal to me in this one specialy in the beginning, bleus was never really Queen music, not even with a Bleus/Rock singer like Paul, so i have to agree with you on this one 4/10 9. Some Things That Glitter: I like it. 7/10 9. Some Things That Glitter: Yahwn, Boring song 4/10 10. C-lebrity: Dislike it. Musically it is quite good but the chorus is horrible. If they had the "kerching"/cash register at the end that would have meant a 1 point deduction. 3/10 10. C-lebrity: I like the riff, and the music, the lyrics? well i think this line "Words are very important, but iff take them to seriously we destroy everthing" (Living Colour, intro to "Ingnorance is Bliss") fit here. the whole song is just critical note on the the so called talent shows sticking up all over the world 7/10 11. Through the Night: Again, somewhat indifferent, leaning towards dislike. 4/10 11. Through the Night:This agree with you i like this song, the relaxed Sadnes Ambiance 7/10 12. This is why I decided to post my thoughts on the album. Some people have commented that they like "Cosmos Rockin" and also dislike "Time to Shine" whilst I feel the total opposite. I suppose the redeeming feature of this album is that most of us seem to be overly enjoying some, if not all of the songs. My overall score of 5/10 came from the average of the scores I gave each song. Hope you're enjoying the album too! |

1. Cosmos Rockin' [6.5/10] Very basic rock tune. A little bit uninspired, they can do better than this. 2. Time To Shine [7.5/10] Nice song, though the chorus gets a little repetitive. I agree it's U2-ish, but better (never liked Bono's singing). 3. Still Burnin' [8.5/10] The most Queen-sounding song to me, and definately the best rock song on the album. Love the chorus, the only think I don't particularly like is the guitar solo. 4. Small [8.5/10] Simple ballad but very effective. Charming song, it deserves the reprise at the end. 5. Warboys [7.5/10] Nice heavy song, a bit repetitive though. 6. We Believe [9/10] I don't know why many people don't like this one, this is the highlight for me. The so-called "Brian's Soapbox" lyrics don't bother me at all. Wonderful Queen-like power ballad. 7. Call Me [7.5/10] I like this jolly song. It's good to have this kind of diversity on an album. 8. Voodoo [8/10] Really enjoyable this raw blues song, very laidback and cool. 9. Some Things That Glitter [7/10] Another decent ballad, but not as memorable as Small. 10. C-lebrity [6/10] It's not bad, but surely one of the lesser songs on the album. No idea why they used this as a first single, in my opinion there were about 8 better options. 11. Through The Night [5/10] Typical filler track, this one does nothing for me. 12. Say It's Not True [6.5/10] Never really liked this one, but the powerful bit with Paul makes it better. Hate those vocal effects on Roger and Brian (no idea why people say they're not there, I still hear them). 13. Surf's Up... School's Out! [7/10] Weird song, it doesn't really go anywhere but I can appreciate these kind of Roger songs. 14. Small (Reprise) [7.5/10] Nice ending, reminds me of how good the entire song was. Overall, I like the album. I think what stands out is the great production quality. Although I would've liked to have Roger and Brian lead vocals on better songs, it's good to have Paul sing almost everything because I think he's a very good singer. Looking forward to the tour! |

Firstly, pissed off with Queenonline - "exclusive" Tour Edition - a poxy little poster and a slipcase?? Then after I've ordered that on the original announcement the do one with a DVD, so if I want the DVD, I'll have to buy the CD again.... Cosmos Rocks - Awful, plain cheese infested shite. The worst chorus since the last McFly song I heard - actually, sorry McFly, yours was much better. Time to Shine - Started promising but by the time it reaches the chorus I'd gone off it completely. Skipped on three minutes as it was doing my head in. Still Burning - What is it with these choruses? Like a pissed up 16 year old's first attempt at songs. Still listening? I'm not sure how. Small - Nothing to like or dislike - harmless - except for the Mr Big style sing-along’s, all that's missing is a kid's choir - goes on too long. Warboys - It really is like a Duran Duran cover attempt - except that one was catchy and this is shocking We Believe - Not bad in comparison to those before it, I may even listen to this again - but, as with many so far, too long. Call Me - A bit better, a more relaxed feel, simple 70's country- style, even if the call me if you need... grated me after the 20th time. Voodoo - Blues isn't my thing but this isn't bad, at least it's not the school-rock that I've been hearing so much of. Some Things That Glitter - From being rocked out with rubbish attempts at being modern, the album has gone completely the opposite and I'm not balladed out (probably not a real word!). As a stand alone track this is probably the best so far. Can't stop singing Gold instead of this though - although, that's an injustice to Prince, because Gold is so much better that this. C-lebrity - Fuck off - If I heard this from any other band I'd say it's a load of tripe - and I'm saying it for "Queen" too. Through The Night - I am frankly bored now. Say It's Not True - Good, good song, easily the best on the album, shame, considering it's hardly a new one. Surf's Up....School's out - Here's me thinking it couldn't get any worse than two people of arguably the best ever band, singing songs which someone 1/3 of their age would be embarrassed with now on the line... Small reprise - Why did this make the album? Mr Big almost came back. In other words; Oh my. Oh my. Why is it on every song you are thinking - this sounds like so and so. Surely that isn't what Queen are about? Why didn't Brian and Roger take lead vocals for at least a song each? QPR live worked for me because of rotation of singers (and obviously the back catalogue). 120 mins of this Paul loving and Wembley Arena will be a very empty place come encore time. Paul Rodgers ft Brian May and Roger Taylor is not what I've paid £50 to see. Anyway, back to this shower - Terrible. 3/10 |

01. Cosmos rockin' - 8.5/10 02. Time to shine - 8/10 03. Still burnin' - 10/10 04. Small - 9.5/10 05. Warboys - 10/10 06. We believe - 9.5/10 07. Call me - 8/10 08. Voodoo - 3.5/10 09. Some things that glitter - 7/10 10. C-lebrity - 9/10 11. Through the night - 6.5/10 12. Say it's not true - 10/10 13. Surfs up... schools out - 7.5/10 14. Small reprise - 9.5/10 overall - 8.5/10 I love what they have done. Maybe because I was waiting for much worse out of it but gladly I was wrong. The album includes many hard rock songs which remind me most the old Queen and ballads also. Rodgers voice is much better that I expected it to be as the first tour started on 2005 much of the queen songs he sang (at least for me) they sounded bad. But as the time went by he gained experience (for the queen songs) to suit more with the songs. Now we can see the results on the album and also the first show they had on 12th sept. Brian and Taylor have the same power and the style they had decades before. Yeah I've read the reviews of Brian that he doesn't play as he used to but for me, who doesn't play guitar, it sounds the same. |

And then the line: Once i loved a butterfly.. COME ON! It fucks up the whole songI don't think he's referring to a real butterfly (Lepidoptera) Have you never come across the term "social butterfly" someone who flits form place to place , friend to friend, party to party? Makes sense in the context of the song. |

Cosmos Rocks review! 1. Cosmos Rockin' 8/10 Decent rock song, love the chorus! The bit at the start reminds me of One vision opening AKOM album. 2. Time to Shine 7/10 A bit u2ish, as people have been sayin, but Paul's vocals soar, a bit repetitive towards the end though! 3. Still Burnin' 5/10 Bog standard rock song complete with a snippet of We will rock you, worst song on the album in my opinion. 4. Small 7/10 Nice acoustic ballad, with great guitar solos by Brian, but a bit too long for my liking. Good lyrics! 5. Warboys 9/10 Much better than Paul's solo version, this is hard rock at its best, very led zepplin! 6. We Believe 7/10 Typical Queen sing-a-long but a bit too repetitive, without ever going anywhere. Nice words. 7. Call Me 7/10 This song for me reminds me of Crazy Little thing called love. A nice little number, nothing more nothing less! 8. Voodoo 8/10 Nice laid black blues piece, very much a Paul Rodgers song! Very cool with good lyrics. The guitar solos reminds me of Dire Straits or Eric Clapton. 9. Some things that Glitter 6/10 The lyrics are a bit cheesy ('Once i loved a butterfly') but not too bad otherwise. 10. C-lebrity 9/10 I'm sorry but anything with a killer Riff like this one should be praised, its as catchy as hell, even the chorus is growing on me. 11. Through the Night 7/10 David Gilmour style guitar work by Brian throughout, one of the best ballads on the album. Good lyrics. 12. Say it's Not True 8/10 Proccessed vocals aside this is a great song, specially the ending when it gets heavy! Nice to hear Roger and Brian taking up singing duties. 13. Surf's Up..School's 0ut! 10/10 An epic closing song to the album, full of guitar solos, brilliant vocals from Paul and a general feel good factor! For me some of the middle sections seem quite dance oriented. For me its the song which represents what the collaboration sounds like! For me its a cross between Headlong and You Don't Fool Me. 14. Small (Reprise) 8/10 A nice mournful guitar solo by Brian, great for what it is, love the sound of water hitting the shore and the seagulls at the beginning! 8/10 overall!! Great album, showing that the collaboration actually works! Its up there with some of the Freddie albums, although strictly speaking this is a different band, so comparing it to the Queen of old is somewhat unfair. But never the less this was worth waiting for, it has exceeded my expectations!! |

Not going to review the tracks, others have done that. Taking the album as a whole I think it is one of the best frankly People who say "It's not Queen" should cast their minds back to the days of Hot Space, or even Jazz for that matter, there were many saying the same thing back then, so the view that Freddie would never have gone down this route... well who the hell knows what would have happened. This IS a new band, but has all the trademarks that I love about both artists so it's a big winner for me. Best part..the whole three guys in a studio feel, very live, very energetic. Worst part... Warboys (personally) sounds a little dated, kind of fits with recent events but not my fav track, that being said I love the individual elements, such as the drum sounds. The cover is growing on me fast, hated it at first now...well I kind of like it. Absolute best bit for me ROGER TAYLOR, he has his love of drums back, and he sounds great he plays well and it's inspiring to hear... Fantastic. |

Ok, I've listened to "The Cosmos Rocks" several times now since Sunday, my brief thoughts follow: "Cosmos Rockin" is a bit of a throwback to a 50s kinda feel of a good time rocker, the lyrics are throw-away material but it's a fun track and much like the live performance, the old guys show a lot of energy. "Time To Shine" can, at times, be repetitive but Paul's vocals soar and Brian seems to be channeling The Edge. "Still Burnin" is the kind of riff heavy rock track I was hoping for since I first heard them perform Free's "Fire and Water." The Red Special is oh so present in that patented orchestral way, love the solid backing vocals. I still don't care much for the sample of "We Will Rock You," it was jarring when I first heard it but upon further listens it's easier to ignore. "Small" is a quiet, Free-esque track but definitely an uplifting song that I can see turning into the hand waving, audience participation material we've come to expect. "Warboys" is easily my favorite song off the album. The most overtly political track here but the lyrics flow very well and the backing vocals blow away "Still Burnin," makes it very catchy but there's a menace to them as well. Paul's singing has a lot of passion here. Love it. The next three tracks, "We Believe," "Call Me" and "Voodoo" I don't like at all. Period. I skip past them each time. "We Believe" is a cliche ridden spiritual song, "Call Me" is like "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" if you remove the boppy fun and "Voodoo" reminds me too much of Santana which just bores me to tears. "Some Things That Glitter" is a bit forgettable to be honest. Granted it's quite pretty but it does come off as album filler. "C-lebrity" is a fun pop rock song but as I've talked about this before (and "Say It's Not True" as well) I don't feel the need to discuss them again. I dig both songs. "Through the Night" is my second favorite song off the album. You'd be forgiven if you thought that this was a brand new Bad Company song (though with FAR better guitar work!) and it has that dreamy somewhat ethereal feel to it that kinda takes you to a different place. Very moody and atmospheric. "Surf's Up....School's Out" is awful. Besides the dopey title (which reminds me of the cringe worthy "Radio Ga Ga"....but "Ga Ga" was a good song so that more than made up for it) there is this stomach churning "YEEEAHHHHHHH!" at various points which makes me wanna smack a random stranger. I understand that this is supposed to be a "fun summer" song and that I shouldn't take it too seriously but c'mon, this shouldn't have been on the album at all. It's maybe B-side quality. "Small (reprise)" is just a re-introduction of the main song and is a quiet, peaceful ending to the album which, frankly, made me feel happy and content. Maybe that sounds odd, I dunno. Anyway, I had hoped "The Cosmos Rocks" would offer something decent but I kept my expectations low not knowing just what this combination would offer. Overall "TCR" was far more solid than I thought it'd be, out of the 14 tracks, 4 were complete crap and I don't ever plan on listening to them again but the rest were pretty damn good. Out of *****, "The Cosmos Rocks" gets *** and a half. |

Cosmos Rockin' - Classic RockN'Roll tune! Very nice job! Of course choirs are very very good and i really like the song alot. Guitar solo is great. Very good song! Love it! Time To Shine - Some people say it's U2-like but i think this song has soul and it's really nice. Words are nice too and tune is very likeable and it gets in your ear very quick. Love it! Still Burnin - ok song. Not my type of style to be honest but i can listen it. it doesent have that 'thing' that it gets into your ear so quick but i cant also say i dislike it. Good song. Small - one of my favorite songs. I really love it. It has very nice tune ...with acoustic guitar and later on when song is growing.. very very good song, i may say EXCELLENT as well too, yes, it's EXCELLENT! Because everyone needs place they can hide :P :) LOVE IT 10/10 Warboys - a song that reminds me of marching warriors from movies... i love the tune and melody of the song, very nice work on guitar by Brian. Very good song by Paul. Love it! We Believe - one of my favs. Love it 10/10 i really like lyrics and melody is so gently and nice.. to relax... amazing song really love it. It has point with lyrics and it's really masterpiece of Brian. LOVE IT! Call Me - when i first heard it it automatically reminded me of Crazy Little thing called love, dont know why, but i love this funny tune. Very nice country song :P. It's really pleasure to listen to it. Voodo - jazzy bluesy song... not my favorite style of music... but i say it's ok. Some people may find it very good but i just say it's good. people do not discuss styles so i say just OK song. Some Things That Glitter - amazing song 10/10. Lyrics are amazing. Tune is amazing, i really enjoy listening this song and love it from the bottom of my heart, really. AMAZING voice and melody. C-Lebrity - classic rock'n roll melody. love it and really enjoy listening this song. Great voice by Paul and of course love the choir and i really like that catchy part 'c-clebrity -c, c- lebrity'.. guiar solo is good, shout be longer and i bet it would be even better if it was longer. Love the song. Through The Night - same as i said about Voodo. Not my first pick of the song when i want to listen song from Cosmos Rocks... not sendon, third, fourth, fifth or sixth... ok song. Say It's Not True - God, listened to this song so many times before album went out and i really like it. i can listen to it any time. Very good duet with Brian and Roger when they 'mix' voices on one verse then song EXPLODES with amazing guitar, drumming and great Paul. LOVE IT REALLY. One of favs too :P Surf's Up...School's Out - listened it only few times... ok tune. Not the biggest fan but it's ok. Loved the piano part at the beginning really. Small - reprise - Very nice ending of album, nice natural sounds of birds and really nicely done ening, one of the best endings of album i have ever heard. --------------- At the end i can say i'm amazed how Brian, Roger and Paul did this masterpiece of album. I really love it and i did not even imagine it could be this good. I was thinking Queen is dead after Made In Heaven, Roger and Brian did too, thy admitted on interviews... but this is completely new Queen album with Paul on main vocals. Really, this is GREAT ALBUM and i loved it so much. 5 Fav songs: Small, We Believe, Some Things Glitter, Cosmos Rockin' and Time To Shine Honestly, Hrvoje :) |

Heard this album for the first time last night. My hardcore Queen fan Hubby very dissapointed. But I like I said to him, sadly with one song writer passed away and another coming in ,any new material was never going to sound the same. Alot of styles on the album and as a Prince fan I like that.I like Warboys and C-lebrity.Maybe others will grow on me. Only thing that pissed me off, was that we paid twice as much for this CD from QOL than Play.com for a 'special Tour Edition' which was a small poster with the dates on. An extra £7 for that???!! |

Hitman - precisely why would I "fuck off"? If you look at my profile you'll see I've been a member of this website before Q+PR existed. Clearly in your deluded world I only meant to like everything that Brian May and Roger Taylor put their hands too. Since Monday, I've listened to the album a few more times - my 3/10 rating has not changed. Although one or two songs weren't as bad as I remembered, so maybe I'll be giving it a 4 soon. Thankfully I'll keep an open mind, unlike some. I know the live show will be totally different (escpecially if we've only 3 new songs) so bring on the first O2 show. |

FatBumGirl - as a massive (not literally but) Prince fan myself - where are the Prince similarities on this album? I head none myself but I'd be interested to listen to it again with that thought... |

No! lol What I'm mean is there are different music styles on the album like Prince's albums always are. It doesnt sound like Prince at all! :) |

My two cents Cosmos Rockin A basic 12-bar rock n' roll with deliberately daft lyrics? Songwriters such as Brian, Roger and Paul could have tried harder, but it's still nice. Time to Shine Weird U2 guitar licks, forced melody, outrageous lyrics, here is a short story about that: no. Still Burnin Somehow reminiscent of Free, Brian’s solo albums and … Queen! Even sounds a bit like Dog With A Bone. Small Sounds a lot like a Paul McCartney ballad circa Flaming Pie. Quite good. Warboys (A Prayer for Peace) Impressive sound, but I found the melody lacking, and the lyrics, ooh boy We Believe A mix between George Michael and Do They Know It’s Christmas with Soapbox lyrics? No thanks. Call Me Is that the one that could have fit on Sheer Heart Attack? More like the natural son of Feel Like Making Love and Dreamer’s Ball. Likeable but I might grow tired quickly. Voodoo Lackluster 80's blues jam, OK chorus though Some Things That Glitter I had high hopes for this one, thinking it might be a Made In Heaven sounding power ballad. But the chord progression and the melody are just lame. Once again, lyrics made me cringe. C-lebrity With hindsight, and for all its faults, not a bad choice of single (certainly a better one than Heaven For Everyone) Through the Night The mix of the intro is barely legal (guitar too high, no kick, no bass) but the verse is OK. And then the chorus kills it with the uncalled for rhythmic changes, weak melody and weaker lyrics. Say It's Not True We know the song, it’s great. But the production is just unacceptable: flat sounding synths, terrible flanger on the vocals… I like the acoustic version better. Surf's Up... School's Out! Maybe the song with the most potential, many of the gimmicks are strong (harmonica riff, “Follow that dream”, the scansion of Surf’s up, School’s Out). A shame the structure is such a bloody mess. Still the song I most want to hear on the tour Small (Reprise) Hmm, was this really necessary? Runaway Good song, good performers: they couldn’t go too wrong with this. |

ROTC sleeve: Say It's Not True (written by Taylor) SINT single sleeve: Say It's Not True (written by Taylor) TCR sleeve: Say It's Not True (written by Queen + Paul Rodgers) (by the way - all SINTs except the single one went under Queen Touring Ltd., but the single version under Queen Productions... I can't get it) Live In Glasgow sleeve: Warboys (A Prayer for Peace) (written by Rodgers) TCR sleeve: Warboys (written by Queen + Paul Rodgers) What's the point? SINT on the single is by Roger, the same SINT on the album is by QPR? Well, C-Lebrity is by Rog too, Call Me is by Paul, how about others? Sorry if it has been asked before. |
