Since there was no Queen concert in 1983, I planned for my Best Of The Best 1983 thread to share this recording, however I found out that my copy is lossy. I will probably share it anyway, but I would REALLY prefer to have a REALLY lossless version. Can anybody help me with it ? |
Penetration_Guru 19.08.2008 15:32 |
That's probably my fault, having encoded a tape years ago (hopefully pre-flac bieng widely known). I'm willing to have another go at some stage, but it will be a little while. |

OK, but you do know how slow my promises are, don't you? |
Queenrockyou 20.08.2008 15:27 |
I'll wait for that too, no matter how slow it is ! By the way, dear Pittrek, why not considering a Best Of The Best Solo Series ?? One thread with one or two shows from each tour for example ? We don't have that much solo here ! Regards, Olivier, France. |

Possibility 1 - I will skip 1983, and do only 1984, 1985 and 1986 and then stop Possibility 2 - I will do ALL years, and the years when Queen had no concert will be filled with radio interviews / solo performances / QPR and it will stop with the year 2008 |
Queenrockyou 21.08.2008 06:18 |
Hi Pittrek, I think you might create a Best Of The Best for each year until 1986 (skipping 1983), then maybe one for 2005 and one for 2006 (all isn't out yet, but I think there is enough material to start your series). After that (according the energy you still have and the support you get !), one Best Of The Best Brian May, or maybe one for each tour he made according to the material available, and one Best Of The Best Roger Tayor and one Best Of The Best The Cross. Specialists could add their contribution too, it could be great. I think this would be enough work, and that would be really interesting, especially the solo efforts, that would spread a little hat is shared on Queenzone and I think about the newbies here, really interesting to discover the artists as a whole (Queen, QPR) and independantly from each other (Brian, Roger, The Cross). If you create Best Of The Best series with only interviews for some years, it would be losing interest as it is not really part of "Best Of The Best" idea until now. Keep the good work as it is ! Maybe after that Best Of The Best, someone could be interesting to have an interview Series, with interviews for each tour / album and then between 1986/1991 and before the QPR thing. Why not a Best Of The Best pics too ? Well, just a thought ! regards, Olivier, Belgium. |

I have this on tape (as sold by capital radio) and would be only too pleased to post a copy but I have no idea how to get it from tape to an acceptable format. If someone could provide an idiot proof guide I would gladly do this. |

As I see UK in your profile, english shouldn't be a problem;) here is something which can help you:link |

I have read it and I will attempt the transfer either tonight or tomorrow morning. |

Just to keep you posted. I located the tape and attempted to transfer to the PC this morning. However, I'm having some technology issues - it keeps coming out in mono but I'm pretty sure I just need a different lead. I would appreciate a little more help though. After doing a small trial run I got audio in wav format but I realised that I don't know what to do after that! Do I need to split the audio into tracks (as opposed to having side 1 and side 2 tracks only)? Should I perform noise reduction? How do I convert tracks to FLAC? Where/how do I upload the finished product? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Where/how do I upload the finished product? Any help would be greatly appreciated.Well I can't really help you with the mono part, there are much more competent people for that here, but what do you mean with mono ? That you're recording it to one chanel or that both channels contain the same audio information ? Splitting - I would recomend to split it correctly in any sound editor (e.g. Audacity or what are you using) to have each "song" in a separate wav file. Noise reduction - only if you know EXACTLY what you're doing. If you haven't done it before, I would recomend to post an untouched version, and let somebody else to do it if necessary because an incorrectly done noise reduction can cause more damage then the noise itself. The easiest way how to convert the finished wav files to FLAC is to download Trader Little Helper ( link ), go to the "Encode wav file(s)" card, click the "Add" button and add there all wav files in the correct order, chose "flac" in the pulldown menu, choose Level 8, check "Align on sector boundaries", "Test encoded files", "Create checksum file" and you can also check "Delete source files" if you want. Then just click "Encode" and that's it After that I usually open the flac files in WinAmp 5, and tag them properly, but most people don't do that. Then you can put the files to max. 100 MB archives (you can use e.g. the free 7-zip if you don't have anything else - link ) and upload them to some file sharing server, like mediafire or rapidshare. Or of course you can start a torrent here |

hi, Here you'll find what you need to split. link The best tool for converting wav in flac is Traders Little Helper: link And to share your work with the grateful (sigh) QZ community 2 choices: via torrent, you'll find a tutorial in a sticky thread on the announce forum or via a file hoster: Rapidshare/Mediafire for examples. I hope I could help you! Edit: too late;) but 2 minds are better than one! |

Thanks for all the help and advice; I've really enjoyed learning new skills! I've transfered the tape but would appreciate if someone could listen to part 1 for me before I upload the rest to check that it's all worked OK (it sounds a little distorted in places to me). If you think it could sound better then I'm only too pleased to give it another go. Part 1: link |

Also you're right about the distortion, but it's not really bad. Overall it sounds good to me, can you post the rest please ? Or what do other people think ? |
Satriani 31.08.2008 07:11 |
I have done some hiss reduction - is this a bad idea; should I not do this? Should I post the untreated version? Also, if you don't mind, I'd like to have another go at capturing the audio with less distortion before I post the rest. If I fail I'll post the rest later today. Once again, thanks for your help and patience with my first attempt at all this. |

But still, it's pretty good for your first transfer |
Satriani 31.08.2008 19:23 |
OK I've transfered the cassette again using different software and I think the result is better - there's still a little distortion but I think it's the best I can make it without buying a better cassette player. (Also, I haven't done any hiss reduction). Anyway, let me know if it's OK. Part 1: link Part 2: link Part 3: link By the way, do you think anyone would be interested in the Alexis Korner interview of Brian May for the 'Guitar Greats' series that was broadcast on radio 1 in summer 1983 (I think)? |

One small stupid question here, is this recording a FM broadcast or a Pre-FM version ? Many thanks for the transfer and the share ! Regards, Olivier, Belgium. |
